To be fair we all would have looked good against the sisters of the poor schools that our conference mates like UCF played.

RE: ***Official ECU Pirates vs. UNC-Raleigh Wolpfack Game Thread*** (8/31)
I was at the game and honestly, we competed much better than the score might indicate. Three plays killed us: our fumble on their 1 yard line (that was recovered by them in the end zone) and two blown coverages (both of which were wheel routes) which resulted in two TDs.
Their D is likely the best we will face this season. That being said, we did not run the ball well at all and we had way to many dropped passes.
We look much better and unlike the previous three seasons, the effort was there; we just need to execute better.
We will win 5-7 games this year.

Don't discount Tulsa's defense. We got a ton of props from the talking heads for our guys. I think we should have three all AAC first teamers this season. (Gibson - DE, Edmiston - MLB, Collins - OLB)

Like i've stated on other boards, it's good to get this game out of the way week one. If we had played Gardner Webb and blew them out everyone's expectations would be way off the charts and would just crash after the first loss like this. As i've been reminding my fellow Pirates UCF finished 6-7 a year after their 0-12 season, that season they were blown out by Michigan 51-14 and Arkansas St. 31-13. It's just one game it's not the end of the world.

That’s kind of the way I felt after watching it. The Packs D-line play was outstanding. They stuffed everything. I feel like our team played better than the score indicated. I look forward to the weeks to come. I think we are going to continuously improve.
N.C. State is a really good team, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
5-7 wins is possible.

You know we have sucked for a long time when we look at a 34-6 lost and say we are getting better. We still got beat by four TD and I just don't know about our starting QB and this offense. I would like to see our backup play a little bit and see if he fits better, I know our starting QB is a local guy that everybody loves but he looked terrible Saturday. And our offense is not built for him, he is not a pocket passer and that is what we need right now. So not knocking our guy but you got to build a offense around a QB like that. Tebow looked like a monster in college because the coaching staff built around him and reminds me of him a great ball player but maybe not a great QB. Hope we look better on Saturday against GW. But our D looked a ton better and that is a step in the right direction. This is a 4 to 5 win team at max this year.

Two things:
1) I went away thinking we're going to be better on defense. The team got a ton of third down stops in that game. They had NC State at something like 1/8 on third downs for a while there. Offense, on the other hand, might be a real trouble. Even if the drops/jitters work their way out, the O-Line is still a major liability. Might be a long season.
2) Herring did play a little in that game. 4/6 for 60 yards. He'll get some playing time next week, but not sure how much that will tell us. I'd like to think that, like Minshew, he's better than he looked under the terrible coaching staff we just canned, but he still seems to be a turnover machine in practice/scrimmage.

As the season plays itself out our protection should improve.
We don’t really know how good NC States D-Line is yet, but they could be great. There are a few guys there with NFL potential like Alim McNeill and he wasn’t even a starter.
Point is, don’t panic until we play poorly vs an FCS or Yukon or ODU, neither of which looked good Saturday.

I never had either as likely wins, but I use Temple as the measuring stick for our progress. Temple has pimp slapped us every year in the AAC. When we can compete physically with Temple and Cinci then I'll know we're on our way. I do believe that worm is going to turn, but not this year.
