Truth. The realignment carousel has permanently stopped spinning. If Cincy had the same opportunity to join the Big East in hoop instead of being a forever member of the AAC in all sports, you can bet they they would have done the same thing that UConn did and their fans would be on here bragging about the merits of independence.

That's crazy talk.

Gee, I was just trying to be helpful. Boneyard football forum is hurting right now and I thought you could cheer them up. If you've been banned there, I could put in a good word to get you reinstated.

RE: Pete Thamel - sell out of football makes UConn one of country's worst jobs.
UConn started out as a basketball school and will end up as a basketball school. There’s nothing wrong with that. The only way the Big East move makes sense is the eventual changing of the football program. Whether that means dropping to FCS or getting rid of football altogether I don’t know and it will probably be a dollars and cents decision. UConn has only competed at the highest level for 20 years while the rest of the league (outside Florida) have been competing at the highest level of college football for 100+ years. I don’t think there will be a big hew and cry no matter the final outcome.

My apologies. Will you be so kind as to hang around long enough to liveblog the Wagner @ UConn game? It doesn't appear to be on tv here.

He added that UConn could fire their coach after December 1st without financial consequences. He added however that UConn's decision to "sell out football" for a basketball invite as made their football program one of the least attractive in the nation.

So, does Thamel think that if UConn had stayed in the AAC that Nick Saban eventually would take over the program? C'mon. The reality is that if you are a northeastern program that isn't a part of the P5 club, you chances of getting a quality coach are already slim to none just by being outside of the "club". Will it make it harder to get a good coach now than when we were in the AAC? Perhaps, but it isn't a guarantee. UConn football was doing poorly in the AAC and, as long as we kept losing, nobody good would have wanted the job anyway. If UConn can at least have some success as an independent (if even just the smallest amount), we will be better off than we were before.

Just because we will be an independent with no guaranteed bowl tie-ins doesn't mean that the sky is falling. We will likely be able to offer a few annual regular season games against P5 opponents, which seems to be more attractive to me than the highlight of a season being an appearance in the Family Dollar Bowl against the 3rd best team from CUSA or the Sun Belt.

LMFAO. Great spin.

No possibility of Access Bowl.
No incentive for anyone of any meaningful level to schedule you.
Nothing to compete for other than a few wins against a bad schedule.
Coming off an 0-12 year with maybe the worst defense in modern college football history.
You'd be hard pressed to find a worst football situation in FBS college football.

Bottom line. Big East moves makes sense if you're giving up on football. UConn can spin it all they want, but they're football program is done.

The irony is that if UConn can get its basketball house in order and be serviceable in football, we would likely still make the ACC cut for the #16 team before Cincy if Notre Dame ever gave up independence (which they never will - so ACC expansion isn't happening).

The Big Ten likely isn't expanding in 2024, but if they did, UConn would at least have a prayer there as a land grant state university. Cincy would get blocked by Ohio State and would be looked down on academically by those Big Ten schools. That said, Big Ten expansion isn't happening.

Big 12? Yeah, you would beat us there, but that geography is terrible for us anyway. It would be a travel nightmare redux for us. That is Cincy's only shot at anything, though... and Big 12expansion isn't happening either.

So if the "P5" arms race is up and all slots are membership slots are taken, then what would we really be giving up even if we gave up football? The chance for that single New Year's bowl berth for the best G5 school? Spoiler alert: we were never going to win enough to earn that slot anyway.

Take that spin.

If that situation came to pass now, they would likely only have a better shot at the Big 10, and that's because there is no way OSU would ever approve UC in the Big 10, so 1 in a million is still higher than zero. The ACC and Big 12 would definitely take UC over UConn in this hypothetical scenario.

The ACC isn't taking Cincinnati, they'll be at a 14/15 alignment into the 2030s unless Texas shakes loose, and the Big 12 is only taking schools if they lose schools. Otherwise - correct, and that's basically the same math that UConn did. The most compelling arguments for remaining in the AAC all center around ways to get out of the AAC, whereas the most compelling arguments for joining the Big East center around what the Big East offers as a member. Once you come to terms with other ways out of the AAC being closed off, it's a pretty easy decision for UConn. I was just shocked the university was actually honest with itself.

I've been advocating this for almost two years now. The writing was on the wall when the TV networks threatened the Big 12 out of expanding.

I can say with 100% certainty that if Cincinnati had flushed their football program the way Connecticut has flushed their football program, we would burn that joint to the ground...Playing 1-AA level football seems like a pretty heavy price to pay just to hang out at MSG for a couple of days every March to watch a basketball tournament. But, if you Connecticut folks are good with it that's all that matters.

I can't stress this enough, football was only ever moved up in order to facilitate basketball. The decision was made because it was believed there was going to be an eventual merger between Big East Football and the ACC (which largely did happen) and UConn wanted to stay attached to Syracuse and BC (which obviously didn't happen). Once FSU/Clemson leveraged the Big 12 option into getting Louisville into the ACC, and then the Big 12 was bullied out of expanding, there was a real "well, now what?" moment.

UConn can put 20k in MSG by itself, they flipped the whole East regional on Michigan State the last time they won the title because it went through NYC. UConn very well may not have had 20k people go to the Fiesta Bowl total, even when you count all the non-school ticket vendors and secondary sellers. It's just different here.

Okay there are 130 FBS schools and UConn's recruiting class is ranked 148. 03-lmfao

Expect a UConn fan to spin it this way ... Since almost all their recruits are unranked and unknown the thinking goes .. 'who knows how good they will be. Maybe UConn has a great recruiting class. Being ranked #148 at 247 is therefore meaningless.' Just like despite being turned down for conference membership by the AAC, C-usa, and Mac, it was really Independence they want it all along. Independence is good news .. the best news. You got to do what you got to do.

its not about nick saban... nobody but Alabama is getting nick saban

but in the aac you could take coaches from the other G5 (except a few mwc)..and elite fcs coaches

i could argue nobody would have wanted tulane basketball, yet tulane grabbed one of the best coaching hires in basketball this offseason

coaches believe they can turn around any program, YOU UNDERESTIMATE THE WILL OF COACHES..oregon was just as bad an uconn only 20 years ago till (till the found the right coach)..
jim calhoun said the same thing, that he was told winning basketball in uconn was impossible and he took it too prove them wrong..calhoun said that football is just waiting on that coach (hunter said the same for tulane)

aac= they will take the job solely because they think they are that special coach (its in thier control)..the difference between buffalo (who wins) and uconn is minute

indy= everything isnt in their control who would take a job like that?? no one with any other job offer will consider uconn... and top level c-usa/mac coaches will be able to steal coaches from you

you have no championship to play for, no bowl to play for, your football is essentially recreational....you have no leverage to recruit

your current coach is still recruiting as an aac, for players that will never play for this league... (your official offer level that were just sent out have huge aac logos on them for 2020 recruits)

your are in denial if you think you are in the same situation indy as aac

how.. playoff is expanding... the moment that path to national championship is open in the AAC we wont need the p5....how is it an easy decison...

you destroyed football, for marginally better basketball (aka vill and the others)

Exactly. If basketball only matters and everyone is fine with no football on any level, then they can rejoice.....I guess. Seems an expensive way to reach that nBE and possible weekend in MSG.

All hope to be major player in sports is dead. If they pretend independent will be better, than their travel cost are going to be nuts on a crappy schedule. They needed to kill football yesterday for any of this to make any sort of sense.

Travel costs are gonna be nuts with Indy football and Big East everything else? More than the current set-up? Puff puff pass, my friend. Don't be stingy.

Truth. The realignment carousel has permanently stopped spinning. If Cincy had the same opportunity to join the Big East in hoop instead of being a forever member of the AAC in all sports, you can bet they they would have done the same thing that UConn did and their fans would be on here bragging about the merits of independence.

Them 2 for 1s with North Dakota ain't easy to get to in November....
