Penny vs. Van Excel would make for some interesting basketball.

I said this in another thread but my outside the box target has always been Dave Smart. What he does with that Carleton program is pretty awesome. They trash good NCAA teams every single year. I'd love to see if he could do it in major college basketball.

I'm still not convinced that we are ever going to be getting top recruits. Lack of recruiting wasn't on Cronin. I'd say a top 40-50 recruiting class is our ceiling. We need a coach who can make a top 25 team out of a 50-100 recruiting class.

Agree. I’d take him all day long. Just win.

I'd take Smart. We've got a couple Canada guys on this team already and Cronin seemed to be recruiting Canada more heavily the most coaches. As long as Smart could continue that and bring in some guys from the USA as well we'd be in good shape.

Exactly this. When the pitch is come play for the 7th best conference in America for a coach making the 40-50th best salary in the country you're not getting good recruits without cheating. Mick was hitting well above his average.

X1000. And it has nothing to do with him being a former XU Head Coach. As a matter of fact, I'd be open to giving Pat Kelsey a look. Although, he MIGHT be shorter than Mick! 03-lmfao

Other than be a local guy and an Elder guy, what the hell has Pat Kelsey ever done? He's made 1 NCAA tournament in 7 seasons at Winthorpe.

Didn't say he'd be my choice. I just think it wouldn't hurt to kick the tires. My bigger point was that I'm not against Matta just because he coached at XU and I was using that as an example that I'm not totally against XU guys.

Dave Smart retired from coaching in March to become Director of Basketball Operations at Carleton. I think he might be lured back in with the salary we could offer, as he only made $159,000 canadian dollars.

I don't think Pitino will ever happen. That isn't a Bohn-type of hire. Neither is Matta. Bohn could surprise though.

Talent development will be key, but honestly I see no reason we still can’t recruit better than we have been. Memphis seems to be pulling in plenty of top recruits and I realize that’s somewhat a unique situation, but I see no reason we can’t consistently land players that are around top 100-125 each class, with some classes being a bit better.

Does Van Exel even have a degree?

I like Casey Alexander from Lipscomb. Solid wins this year over SMU, TCU, North Carolina State, Wichita State, lost at Louisville by 4.

He's 46 years old. Was an assistant under Byrd for 16 years at Belmont. 50th on offense and 49th on defense on kenpom this year. 12th in tempo. They shot 37.5% as a team from 3.

Seems like a guy ready to step up and has a solid grasp of both ends of the court.

No Van Exel. Maybe as an assistant.

Pitino, yes. Matta, no. Brannen, no.

I think UC needs a big time recruiter that can lock down high end 2020 talent.

Matta has a pretty good record of recruiting...look at his teams at every stop.

Hard pass on Brannen. Same age as Cronin. Give me Pitino or Van Exel.

JUST WIN BABY
