Exclamation Local Recruits/Local Media
For the past two recruiting cycles, we have had members of our local media embark on a crusade to "expose" Coastal's recruiting class for not including enough local recruits (despite the fact that the recruiting period doesn't end until February).

Here's a story from last year, by an author who is no longer employed as a journalist and who also was found to have fabricated a quote back when we were still being considered for an invitation to the conference. This year, it was a local TV sports anchor taking up the cause, which most of our message board posters pretty quickly jumped on.

How many of y'all have this problem with your local media? Or do you even have this issue?

Maybe not from the media, but we have some fans that seem to think whenever a Georgia high school players takes a scholarship from an out-of-state school every head coach in the state should be fired.

Those CCU writers and reporters need to be reminded that you're not in the Big South anymore, BTW. Heck, you can't even really afford have that mentality in the SoCon.

Exactly. These folks seem to think Coastal is some sort of charity. As I said in one of my replies to the TV anchor on Twitter - I don't care if a player comes from Latta or London. I care if he's a good fit for the team. I don't want us to sign a local kid just because he's a local kid.

Plus - sometimes, kids just want to go away from home for college. We can offer them, but we can't make them accept. If the kid feels like he'll have a better experience at another school, that's not really our fault.

We've had trouble with local media, but not for this reason. So far, this recruiting class doesn't have a single in-state commit. Our local "beat writer", who is a fan of the other in-state school, hasn't always been kind. During the Malzahn year Spring game, we had a large crowd, but he didn't think it was as large as the announced attendance, so he FOI'd the tickets/gate info, which had lower numbers and wrote a big article about it. He's done several other things that I can't think of off the top of my head.

We've had similar situations in Louisiana in a number of sports. A local player only had D2 offers, but the Cajuns should offer him because he's local.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm, No.

RE: Local Recruits/Local Media
Idiots in Monroe think we can sign all local and be competitive. They also think that will fix attendance issues. Monroe has some talent but not enough for a whole team. Coach V and staff have done a lot better with local guys. They think since we haven’t been as successful the issue is not signing local guys. People in Monroe become some of the most ignorant people on the face of the earth.
One guy said he’d take the NE Louisiana All stars vs ULM. They think a 5-10 260 pound center is what we need cause he was good in HS.

There’s guy with D2 or D3 offers and they think they would start at ULM. Then said player has to redshirt at D2 school.

I guess Monroe and Laffy aren’t so different. It’s the exact same thing.

It's been going on since God was in short pants. I work in the media and have since I graduated high school in 1977. They're going to fill copy space and air time. It means nothing. Coaches are going to go get the best player they can possibly sign. Their job depends on it. Ignore it.

With 4 P5 schools in NC, APP has been historically bad at recruiting top talent from our state, most of our recruits come from GA, and other states.

Parts of East Texas, Arkansas, abd Mississipi are closer than parts of Louisiana. People complain about out of state guys as well.

This is a big part of the argument for us, too. These people think that all our attendance issues will be magically fixed if only we'd just sign more local kids. It doesn't work that way, but they don't care, they just care about their narrative.

They’ll still sit in the grove and watch LSU “my Tigahs”

Most teams recruit Texas, with us being somewhat close it’s a no-brainer to get Texas guys

I agree but these fools will constantly bring up not recruiting locals. Someone complained we signed only one local guy yet we offered two who signed at Laffy and one didn’t sign anywhere yet.

I think it depends on what's local to you. In our case local is one the nation's top 3 metros for recruiting. So if we aren't recruiting locally it's likely indicative of a problem.

I would understand dead airtime, but the idiot in question is from Dallas, went to school at Ole Miss and is now starting twitter fights with anyone with a brain cell stirring up controversy. Hasn’t made a peep about it on air. But the hypocrisy to say “I care about local kids”, while being a transplant who gave up on his community, if you use his logic.

The beat writer, in the Austin paper, for TXST is a grad. He's great.
Local newscaster in Austin is a former TXST QB and one of the female reporters from another station is also a grad.
I think we get decent coverage in Austin (or at least have our cheerleaders)
