Uhh, you realize Fayetteville is over 5 hours away from Jonesboro, right? It's not a place we're ever likely to go.

I'm aware. I'm sure there are no Astate alums from Fayetteville and that no Astate fan has ever set foot in the town. Sorry for asking....

I’m sure there’s some fans out there that have been. I never have and I’m 54. I’ve been all around it but never in it.
You need to get out more, son.

There’s nothing in the town that I can’t find elsewhere....without the stench of that creepy school.

Oh....I’ve been to 46 states. Not bad for a recluse, eh ma?

There are a couple, but not on this forum. Most of us steer far away from the place. Last I was in Fayetteville was 2008.

You do realize a large portion don't care if we ever beat CUSA in basketball...right?

It's just not a sport many here care about. Even when Tech beat one of what's supposed to be our best teams in UL, no one really said anything. Ditto when Troy beat WKU.

What is wrong with SunBelt fans? tsk tsk.

It's sad, really. That's why Sun Belt basketball sucks. Because fans don't give a ****. No support.

It has little to do with fans. On average how many Sun Belt universities give two licks about their basketball program? Georgia State, UTA, Little Rock, Texas State?

We have in the past. We will again.

The conference has actually been pretty competitive this year. 8 teams .500 or better

Troy does.

Troy has poured in a lot of money into the basketball program since 2010, with Trojan Arena being the big investment. Basketball used to be a BIG deal, especially during our Division II days... we made it to the NCAA Finals, the Elite 8, a couple of Sweet 16's... and then upon entering Division I, Troy completely dominated the A-Sun in the early 2000's and had the best attendance in the conference, even better than UCF and Georgia State while they were in it.

Troy got on a bad skid upon entering the Sun Belt and it's been hard to recover.

Sun Belt hoops support could definitely be better, but I think we have some good fanbases as a whole. It just lags greatly behind football, just as it does at most schools in FBS.

Honestly, with some of the programs we have, we should be able to regularly compete at the top of the heap of conferences that fall behind the usual Big 6 + 2 (or so).

So what's wrong with SunBelt schools? Money runs out after football? Basketball is a "northern thing?" This conference treats basketball like a neglected step child. Other conferences dont look dead after december. If SBC needs an incentive, basketball payouts are greater than the bowl payouts!

Part of that is that SBC Programs mainly come from states that generally don't put an emphasis on basketball period.

That and scheduling is really killing us. AState has gone from the old days of getting LSU, Memphis, Ole Miss, and others into Jonesboro for a game to playing an OOC schedule this year that consisted of only 3 D1 home games. We've gone years before where a no name Southland is the best we could do in terms of home games.

Its hard to get fans to show up to watch us play nobody. Forces the team to win a lot, and we don't exactly have an illustrious history of that.

Basketball has never been a big deal in the state of Texas. I am glad we are playing better but you don't even really hear UT or A&M fans get hyoed for basketball season.

Texas has always been a Football First State, so no surprise that there's little or no emphasis on hoops. As to TU or A&M fans getting hyped, generally no. But if they (or any of the other large programs in the state) happen to be having a "special" season, that'll generally generate some hype. What's different about TX is that hype will generally end with the season of said program. You don't usually see it carry over the way it does with the more traditional basketball power programs like Carolina, Duke, Michigan, etc.

Well obviously it sucks that we lost but I'm glad it was a good game. We missed 12 free throws.... make 4 of those and we win dammit... oh well. It was a fun trip.

Some thoughts about Arkansas:

1. The western part is gorgeous, I was not expecting all the mountains and what not.

2. Fayetteville is a beautiful little town. We had some surpsisingly good bbq. Wouldve liked to have eaten at some other kind of unique local place since I can get great bbq whenever I want at home but y'all saw what happened when I inquired about that.....

3. The hog fans were really nice. Not super talkative though. No one asked about our program, where we were from, or anything like that.

4. #10 for Arkansa is a beast.

You've never heard of the Ozark Mountains? Those things cover most of the North Part of the State.

For the record, Hog fans who actually graduated from the school are generally nice people. Its hog fans with no ties to the school at all that are the problem.

Please be aware that you went on a board with a lot of AState fans and asked about Fayetteville. You're talking about a fan base that has flown the state flag upside down before because it represents Razorbacks. Simply put, we're not likely to say anything positive about the place. (There's a long thread on our board entitled "Fayetteville is a dump") We don't like them, we don't want anything to do with them, and we certainly aren't going to ever recommend nice places for someone to eat there. That's giving credit to the enemy.

I'm not sure what you expected when you got into this.

I mean I've heard of the Ozarks, I just don't tend to memorize topographic maps of random mountain ranges in foreign states.

As to what I expected? A reasonable answer to a simple question. I mean if yall asked about something in college station, San Antonio, Austin, or any other city that has a school we dont like I'm sure most TXST fans would be able to point out a few places worth eating at at the very least. I mean I get yall hate the hogs but that shouldn't allow you to discount a whole city for the sake of hating the hogs.

I think you ran across something that's a typical Arkansas thing. If you asked a random person in Little Rock about where to eat in Fayetteville, you are likely to get an odd look, unless you just happened to find a Pig fan who likes to travel there a lot.

Arkansas has three major Geographic centers, and there's a big rivalry between each of them. Because of the relative isolation of the people in Northwest and Northeast especially, people in those areas are far more likely to go to either Springfield or Tulsa (For NWA) or Memphis (NEA) for things they need rather than driving to Little Rock.

It's just not the same as Texas where everyone apparently travels to different cities. We tend to be very separate from each other, and try to have nothing to do with the others.

Been that way for years. It's not sad, its just sort of the way things are here. We're very rural and isolated, and to many a 2 hour drive is a really long time, so there's not nearly as much driving to different areas.

To someone from Texas where there's a lot more of working together and wanting to play other Texas schools, it's really weird. To us, staying separate is the way its been for our lifetimes.

What about South Arkansas?

There's not much in South Arkansas.

What about South Arkansas?

There is no population Center in South Arkansas

Largest Arkansas Cities

Little Rock (Central)
Fort Smith (NW)
Fayetteville (NW)
Springdale (NW)
Jonesboro (NE)
North Little Rock (Central)
Conway (Central)
Rogers (NW)

The biggest thing you run into is what is considered "South" Arkansas. There are people in Arkansas that consider Pine Bluff a part of Southern Arkansas. But Pine Bluff is literally only 30 miles Southeast of Little Rock. It's hard to call that South

In terms of cities not listed within the Little Rock census area, the largest is Texarkana, which is part of both Arkansas and Texas and has 35K on the Arkansas side as the 15th largest city. The South itself is extremely spread out and rural. The largest towns in the Southern part of the state outside of Texarkana generally have between 8-12K people.

Simply put, there's not a population center in the South. You're a ULM fan, surely you've driven on the Highway that connects Monroe with Monticello, AR. There's absolutely nothing there. (It's awful at night)

I was thinking there wasn’t much outside of Eldorado and Monticello, but I wasn’t sure what people from the state would think. And I’ve actually never been to Arkansas, I’m not from the area.
