How can the PTB not see how profitable and awesome this would be?

RE: Mother of all Playoffs 2018/2019
Do away with CCG and start 2nd week of December, current week of Army-Navy game. Army-Navy needs to play week after rivalry week.

You can’t play college football until the third week of January, way to long for these kids and the hits their bodies take.

Only go 16 teams, 10 conf champs, and 6 at large. Removes another week from the schedule. 16 teams and all conf champs is enough. There will always be the “next” team that feels slighted no matter where you draw the line.

There are basketball teams that feel slighted because they don’t make the feild of 68.

RE: Mother of all Playoffs 2018/2019
I agree 16 is the limit for a playoff. The P5 would get 11 of the spots most years, but at least it gives the G5 a shot and everyone’s season is meaningful. Anybody outside the 16 gets a participation bowl game.

Based on this season’s rankings and conference championships here would have been the probable matchups in a 16 team playoff.

1. Alabama (SEC) vs. 16. NIU (MAC)
2. Clemson (ACC) vs. 15. UAB (CUSA)
3. Notre Dame (at large) vs. 14. App State (SBC)
4. Oklahoma (B12) vs. 13. Fresno St (MWC)
5. Georgia (at large) vs. 12. Penn St (at large)
6. Ohio State (B10) vs. 11. LSU (at Large)
7. Michigan (at large) vs. 10. Florida (at large)
8. UCF (American) vs. 9. Washington (P12)

In my playoff, a handful of schools would play 1 or 2 more games than they do right now. The players will be fine.

We are already into week 2 of January. What is 1 more week?

An 8 team playoff might happen one day with all P5 conference champs, 2 at large and a G5 representative. A 16 team playoff with all FBS conference champs will never happen. It's all about unequal representation. You've got to bump the numbers up for P5 schools represented, to maximize revenue for the P5, to guarantee all the G5 conferences a seat.

That would be 24 schools, the same ratio of D1 schools in the basketball tourney. Bye weeks and home field advantage built in to reward the top schools.

It actually made the regular season better. I understand why UGA fans weren't happy with being left out of the 4 team tournament, but the SEC Championship game was their Playoff game. Had they approached it that way, they might not have fizzled out against Alabama for a second time in less than 12 months.

I pretty sure they did approach it that way, they had to. They knew a loss would most definitely remove them from the playoff picture, it was the 3.5 quarters of dominance that got them into the conversation as a 2 loss team.

Anything beyond 8 teams is completely unnecessary. You can't make an argument that the #9 team in the country could actually be the best. A 24 team playoff is pointless.

Are you in favor of reducing the NCAA Basketball Tournament from 68 to 32 teams?

I don't watch basketball, so I can't answer that. All I can say is that in college football, your best team is going to be in the Top 6 somewhere. I can't imagine a scenario where a #9 was misunderstood so badly that they were actually the best team in the country.

I don't have the stats, but I'd imagine the 9-16 seeds in the NCAA Basketball Tournament almost never win out.

EDIT: Found them.

Out of 16 seeds. The #1 seed is 132-0 vs #16. In this sample size (since 1985), seeds 9-16 have never won the NCAA Tournament. It's a waste to have more than 8 teams in the NCAA Tournament. The #4 seed has a 0.8% chance to win out, and the #5 has never(!) (since 1985) won the NCAA Tournament. You could have 8 teams in each region that reduces down to an 8 team national playoff. I don't understand exactly how basketball seeding works, but 64 seems entirely too many. Out of 347 teams, a 32 team playoff, with 8 in the final rounds seems like a much better option. I can't see how you wouldn't have the best team in a field of a 32.

https://www.betfirm.com/seeds-national-c...ship-odds/

I get wanting to give everyone a chance, but no one outside of the Top 8 deserves a chance in the CFP.

Also, a 16 team playoff with all 10 conferences would be very competitive. G5 recruiting would increase tremendously along with donations and fan support.

And that is what the P5 never want to happen. The pie will never be shared outside of a lawsuit forcing it.

Must have been after the article date. I don't watch basketball, so I don't know. I can see some of the benefits of having a 16 team playoff, but if the numbers are similar to basketball, including the #9+ would be for fan support only. They won't have a legitimate chance because the best teams will be in the Top 8 already.

I just like the idea that in such a playoff, Florida would have to travel to UCF for the 2nd round...

Top 8 seeds is still a 32 game playoff. A ton of seeds below 8 have made final four runs.

Yes, and I mentioned that in my previous post. If I'm correct, 347 D1 teams are eligible for the Tournament. Wolf asked if we should reduce the tournament from 68 to 32 teams. Seems acceptable to me as the best basketball team in the nation is likely to be found in the Top 32 seeds.

The data is clear, though. Only 4% of 9-16 seeds have made it to the final 4 since 1985, and none of them have made it to the championship game. If we expand to 16 in football, and the numbers are similar, what would be the justification of having those extra teams? If we want to argue money, or fan interest, that's fine, but from an on the field perspective, they would be unnecessary.
