Every good program has a continuous stream of talented QB's recruits. You should always put your best players on the field, regardless of their class. Redshirting should be done where it makes sense, but not if it costs you wins.

HUGE difference between HS & college.

Do you need a blue-chip QB recruit to win? - Football Study Hall

I LOVE Eleby as our quarterback and fully expect him to start in the bowl game. I have no problem with a freshman quarterback deciding to pull back and take the sack over forcing it into a possible interception -- we probably need to credit Lester for his decision making last game. Eleby was able to make precision passes each and every time under constant pressure. I think he could use some work on his velocity -- using "touch" passes when he doesn't need to gun it.

However, Wassink is our quarterback next year without question -- his decision making on the field obviously trumps Eleby at this point in time. It's nice to know we can redshirt Eleby next year and still have him waiting in the wing if Wassink gets injured. Hopefully next year we won't need Wassink to run the ball as much as he has in the past to avoid injury. Regardless, we are solid at QB next year.

What was really great to see from Eleby was his ability to throw guys open on the intermediate routes, and there is serious juice on the football to fit it into tight windows. The best QB's do this. But the best QB's also read a defense, know where the blitz is coming from and know the best guy to go to in that situation. He will get there, and I think he will get there in a hurry.

The only negative on Eleby I saw during the game was not knowing when to throw it away. The wind got the better of some of his passes, but that’s life. He was making some great reads out there.

I should point out, we haven't got him yet. He hasn't signed, and NC State is making a big push, and others have now started getting involved.

Lester played for Gramps.

“Dad” was offered OC by Lester but turned him down. Fully established Div III program HC at North Central College succeeding Gramps.

So strong personal connection.

Gramps is Lester’s role model of character. Immpecable and unquestioned.

Guessing Grandpa wants to see his grandson playing for Lester and his influence may make that happen

Play Eleby. We play to win games now not in the future. Sitting him doesn't earn us anything. Give him playing time. Who knows he might transfer if he's backup to Wassink again next year. I'd rather not have Mussat start.

Wassink has been injured the last two seasons. It makes sense for Eleby to stay. He will be the primary starter at some point.

Problem is -- what if Wassink next year is playing fine... we wait for him to collapse. He doesn't, and all Eleby gets is a majority of a 2nd half against a D1AA, and a couple last-6-minutes in a couple others. Monday-morning QB says "Should have redshirted him. He didn't win us a bowl game anyway." :)

Don’t think that would be a problem, he would just redshirt next year if he doesn’t win the job. That’s a big if in my opinion.

In retrospect it may have been Ron Muhitch (sp?) who Lester played for. He succeeded John Thorne when he stunned most walking away from Wheaton-Warrenville he built to reinvent North Central College’s program. Regardless, I don’t believe Gramps has a say. Not how they roll. The kid will prayerfully consider his options and when ready make a decision.

I predict Eleby starts in 2019. Much bigger arm than Wassink, he'll read defense much better than this year, the NIU win is huge for him. He's 18, what WMU freshman QB put up these numbers?

I think Eleby is solidly in the mix for the starting position next year!

Seems like it would be good to have both playing at different times. Having two quality QB's with game experience insures smooth transition in the event one of them goes down.

Good point -- although I think a 100% healthy Wassink would win the job either way. If he's almost-there come spring training affecting his game, but even then I think Wassink's in the driver's seat. Especially if we're in position to utilize his redshirt next year.

I think utilizing a full year off the minimum isn't the wisest choice. However, if that means the difference between winning a bowl or not, and our 3rd stringer would fold like a freshman girl at a frat party -- then I can see no other choice.
