Exclamation Texas State possible coaching change discussion
1. Would David Bailiff come back to Texas State? Would he be a candidate?

2. Is KC Keeler at SHSU an option?

3. Or will Texas State go after a "name" coach a la Dennis Franchione again?

4. Does a good hire get Larry Teis off the hot seat?

Name coach, Bobby Patrino.

Go after a young up and comer. He will be energetic and work hard to be successful so he can move to a bigger job.

I think they will keep Withers for another year.

Bailiff won't come back as a Coach . . . His name has come up recently from the standpoint of his having expressed interest in the AD position. However, there's apparently some "bad blood" between him and the University Prez. So, that may not be likely either. ( Personally, I wouldn't mind having Bailiff as an AD.)

TXST is too cheap to do a "buy out" of Withers, at least this early . . . It's just not something we do. He'll be back for at least one more less than spectacular season.

As for Larry being on a "hot seat." Well, we wish it were so, but the reality is as long as the current Prez. Is in place, Larry ain't going anywhere. To call him an AD is a bit of a misnomer, what he really is is a compliance officer, and that's all the current Prez. Wants . . . . As long as the programs are clean, kids graduate on time, she's happy . . . winning be damned at TXST.

Basically, we're screwed. Thanks for your interest.

1. Yes and no. I think Bailiff would like to be back here, but it won't happen because Teis and he left on sour terms (and according to rumors, Bailiff was part of a group trying to talk administrators into letting Larry go and bringing him on as AD).

2. It depends... He's not in Larry's rolodex, so Keeler would have to contact us. (you think I'm joking, but that's the mindset of Larry. If you want us, you'll call.)

3. This assumes that Withers is gone this year. I think that is a false assumption. If he were let go, though... I am pretty sure Larry is not allowed to make the decision. He wasn't allowed with Withers. A committee made the recommend, and it was up to Larry to rubber stamp. (again, you think I'm joking, but Larry made that abundantly clear in Withers' introduction speech).

4. Absolutely not. He could hire the next Urban Meyer or Nick Saban, find some way to lock him into a 50 year contract that nobody would touch, and it still wouldn't get him off the hot seat. The issues with Larry are FAR beyond a simple coaching hire. He needs to demonstrate some... desire to make a name for Texas State in a positive light. That means returning calls to reporters that leave a message that they want to interview, that means engaging with fans and donors, that means showing ANY sign of charisma and interest in the job. In short, he needs to do all the things an AD does that's beyond scheduling and compliance.

Many fans want him but he won't come near SM as long as Teis is AD. Teis prides himself on compliance and won't want Briles based on what happened at Baylor and any alleged involvement.

Yeah, I think Fran was the closest you can get to a "dirty" coach with the newsletter.

You may or may not be joking, but if they could give Anderson a raise and a new contract + buyout, he might leave. Even if it was lateral, McCaslin did it to get back to Texas. I remember a UCA coach leaving to go to another Southland school a few years ago

If Tx St paid Anderson 1 million plus incentives with a couple of million for buyout over the next 5 years . . . Who knows

I’m not advocating, just thinking

1. Bailiff is welcome back, if he brings his offensive coordinator from the 2006 Bobcat team. That guy was Tom Herman.

2. Keeler is 5-5 this season. Losses to schools like Incarnate Word and Lamar will not excite the fan base. Withers has a young team and while he probably deserves to be fired, he is going to get another year.

3. Why would a "name coach" consider Texas State? San Marvelous is a great place to live, but a "name coach' would not take the job, unless his name is Art Briles.

4. Teis and good hires are never used in the same sentence. He has been on the hot seat for about a decade and he has managed to keep his job, so Teis firing a coach means nothing if he is the guy doing the hiring.

I think a "name coach" (meaning someone looking to move up quickly) could want to come here.

But if he knows his stuff, he'd require either absolute control (which I can't see happening) or a whole new Athletic Department senior group (which again, I don't see happening).

I'd love to see that. Someone like Leach or something coming in and saying "yes, I will take the job, but you gotta clean house". I just don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell of that happening.

TXST's coach in 2019 will be Everett Withers.
