But that is purely from the fan side, not necessarily what's best for the west.
2005 Triple tie.
Going into the final Saturday the ULM Indians needed a win over the Cajuns to win the conference outright
UL needed a win over ULM to take at least a share + an AState loss at North Texas to get the bowl bid based on tiebreakers.
AState needed a UL win and had to win in Denton in order to get a share and take the tiebreaker.
AState wins 31-24 with that score becoming final around halftime of the game in Monroe.
Cajuns win going away, AState takes the tie-breaker and heads to Lafayette for the displaced NOLA Bowl.
2009 Bowl disappointment
In the 2009 season, we were under the old bowl rules where a 6-6 could go to a bowl if they had to play in order to help their conference meet all their contractual obligations but 6-6 was not "bowl eligible" as we think of it today. 6-6 just provided an exception. Next to last week of the season. The now Warhawks are 6-4 heading into Cajun Field and the Cajuns are 5-5. Louisiana wins 21-17 and the Warhawks then lose to conference runner-up MTSU and UL loses to champion Troy. Both schools finish 6-6 and there is no at-large spot for them. If ULM had won they would have been 7-5 and would have had to have been placed ahead of any 6-6 at-large.
2010 Spoiler
Nothing much riding but pride. Still under the old 6-6 rules, but ULM with a win can get to 6-6 but wouldn't have found a spot in the bowls. Cajuns win 23-22 in Monroe. Keeps ULM from 6-6 but doesn't save Ricky Bustle's job in Lafayette.
2013 Opening the door
Cajuns are 8-2 and 5-0 with a one game lead over AState. Warhawks win in Lafayette and the Cajuns lose the next week in Mobile and ties with AState for the conference. Because there were two bowl ties, a two-way tie isn't broken because league rules mandate bowl placement for both tied teams in a two way tie. Cajuns held the tiebreaker if we had still been only tied to one game.
2016 Bowl bid
Cajuns are 5-6 and need a win to get bowl eligible. UL wins 30-3 in Monroe and two weeks later face USM in the NOLA.
2017 Helping Hud pack his bags
Game is played in September. ULM wins a double OT game in Lafayette. Hudspeth ends up 5-7 and is let go by UL.
2018. Breaking a triple tie
Cajuns and Warhawks will kickoff first at 2:00pm. Winner is assured at least a share of the SBC West title. Just like in 2005 the winner gets at least a share of the title. AState and TXST will kick at 3:00pm.
UL win guarantees a berth in the title game and an AState loss makes the division title outright
ULM win guarantees at least a share of the title, an AState loss gives to ULM outright with a ticket to the title game
AState out with a loss, gets a share with a win. Holds tiebreaker over ULM and loses tiebreaker to UL.
Very similar to 2005 when the Cajuns were in Monroe with AState playing in Texas.
So we've not had a huge amount of UL-ULM drama but there has been some.
