We weren't instantly connected to those events like we are today either.

You didn't have the ability to disseminate information nor coordinate far flung compatriots in the 1960's that you do today.

Exactly right. Instant connectivity...

Please define “the great American experiment”.

It's a reference to writings by Alexis de Tocqueville. While Tocqueville never used the exact phrase, the concept of such flowed through much of his writings. At this point in history no one had tried a democratic system like America. It was unknown if it would survive or function at all.

In his nook "De la démocratie en Amérique" (Democracy in America) he stated:

(translated)

Quote:In that land the great experiment was to be made, by civilized man, of the attempt to construct society upon a new basis; and it was there, for the first time, that theories hitherto unknown, or deemed impracticable, were to exhibit a spectacle for which the world had not been prepared by the history of the past.

(original)

I think Tocqueville should be required reading in schools... but seeing as how we've stopped teaching Civics... i dont see that happening ever.

Some other fantastic comments by Tocqueville from his works in the 1830s:

Quote:We can state with conviction, therefore, that a man's support for absolute government is in direct proportion to the contempt he feels for his country.

Quote:Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.

Quote:The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens.

Quote:The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public's money.

Quote:It's not an endlessly expanding list of rights — the 'right' to education, the 'right' to health care, the 'right' to food and housing. That's not freedom, that's dependency. Those aren't rights, those are the rations of slavery — hay and a barn for human cattle.

Quote:I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers – and it was not there . . . in her fertile fields and boundless forests and it was not there . . . in her rich mines and her vast world commerce – and it was not there . . . in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution – and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, she will cease to be great.

"Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom.".

He just described the new democrat party to a t

I am seriously worried.

I think we are drifting into two camps so far apart that some kind of split may be inevitable. Canada has similar issues. I could see the northeast allying with Ontario, Quebec, basically every state or province that touches the Great Lakes, plus the Maritimes, and the West Coast as far north as BC, either as one split country or two, with the US southeast and flyover country joining the Canadian prairie provinces and Alaska for another. Basically the producing states splitting from the financing states.

My one reason for optimism is that I can’t really see the military supporting communism, and the military will be needed to enforce massive redistribution.

I age that the military of your generation would not support communism. I don't agree that the military of today would also reject it. Today's military is far more political and corporate in its thought than the military of the 60-80's.
