JMU defense was pretty exceptional yesterday. Was an interesting juxtaposition playing against one of the statistical best defenses in the country. I think I saw Drexel scored 4 points in the 4th quarter all from free throws. Not a single FG.

Definitely a combination of good JMU defense and very cold shooting from Drexel. That makes two straight games where Drexel has been plagued by poor shooting. Even the best defense in the country isn't holding a team 3/23 in a half without some of the blame going on the opposing offense.

Ha, true. #24 (I think it was her) had a nice 10-12 foot shot that they never really went back to in the second half.

Dragons back in action at the BOB this afternoon. Ugly...Ugly first half. Drexel leading 21-12. Kind of looked like Drexel was playing themselves this far. Normally I would be thrilled with a 9 point lead at halftime, but Drexel's had so many missed layups. Then again, Delaware did too.

Dragons have their best offensive quarter that the have had in quite a while, as they start to pull away leading 41-25 after 3. Hendrixson just hit another 3 and Drexel now up by 19.

Drexel beats Delaware 57-40. The nation’s #1 scoring defense holds another opponent down to very little scoring. Drexel is now 5-0 in true road games for the 1st time in program history. Ironically, last year, Drexel dominated at the DAC going undefeated until the CAA Championship game. This year, 4 of their 5 losses thus far were at the DAC.

BUZZER BEATER!!!!

Dragons become the first team to beat Northeastern on their home court this year 61-59. Drexel blew a 14 point 2nd half lead. Northeastern had the ball with the game tied at 59 with 30 seconds left. They lost the ball in the final second. Denise called timeout. Refs put 7 tenths of a second back on the clock to bring it to 1 second. Drexel was able to advance the ball at the time out. That lead to a perfect inbounds and feed to Bailey Greenberg who finished up her career night with a shot at the buzzer. Drexel now improves to 2-2 in the CAA.

With the loses to Towson and JMU this was nearly a must win game to stay in the hunt at the top 3. JMU is clearly at the top. Towson and NU appears to be fighting for #2 along with us. Nice win and need to keep it going.

JMU lost to UNCW last night, so things are really tightening up. Northeastern, Towson, JMU, UNCW, Drexel, and Elon all have a chance to compete for a title this year. In past 5 years since EDD graduated, it was pretty much just JMU, Drexel, and Elon. Should be an interesting tournament in Delaware this year.

Thats a bad loss for JMU. UNCW is slightly improved but they are not a contender. Elon is worse than expected too. They may still be a contender but not sold on them.

Dragons take care of business 61-49 over lowly Hofstra. Drexel is now 7-0 on the road, and are now 3-2 in the CAA.

Great 4-0 weekend for Drexel's basketball teams.

RE: Women's Basketball 2019
Solid win from start to finish tonight against Charleston. The #1 defensive team in the country had their highest scoring offensive output of the season tonight winning 76-53. Drexel gets their first CAA home win and his now 4-2 in the CAA tied for 3rd with UNCW, who they face on Sunday.

UNCW (like Towson) has really turned it around this year. Last season, Drexel beat them by 30 in the CAA Tournament. This year, they have already beating each of the top 2 teams, Towson and JMU, and also beat the 2 time defending champions, Elon thus far. But of course today they lost Delaware to fall to 4-2. So Sunday's game will be huge. Not only is it a battle for 3rd place, but UNCW has a shot at some tiebreaker advantages by beating the top 2 teams. Should be a really good battle.

In the battle for 3rd Drexel dominated the first half. 38-16. UNCW had 4 points in the 2nd quarter. Tough defense leading to bad shots by UNCW on top of active hands forcing turnovers. Greenberg leads the way with 21

We held on for a 67-55 victory. It got as close as 9. UNCW absolutely killed us on the boards. They got a lot of 2nd and 3rd opportunities. Bailey scored 31 for us. Was pretty tough for the others to score. Very good victory.

RE: Women's Basketball 2019
Huge win indeed. This UNCW team is loaded with transfers from major programs, and they're clearly not the same team that Drexel beat by 30 in the CAA Tournament. That said, this still makes it 15 in a row for Drexel over UNCW.

Bailey was unstoppable today. She was 10 for 10 from the field in the 1st half up until missing her last shot at the buzzer in the 2nd quarter. She also managed to play all 40 minutes against a really physical team, and still had enough left to get a few huge late baskets as UNCW was making their run to get to within 7.

The secrete weapon lately for Drexel has been freshman Maura Henrixson. Drexel was really having shooting problems early on, but she got going in the Delaware game a few weeks ago, and has become a lights out 3-point shooter since then. Today, she had a bunch of key 3-pointers early and also hit a huge one late to help Drexel distance themselves from the Seahawks.

Dragons now in sole possession of 3rd place and just a half game behind 2nd place Towson who lost to W&M today.

RE: Women's Basketball 2019
I love this team. I love this program. UNCW was putting Fletcher Cox out there but we hung on with execution. JB I remember Greenberg’s bucket at the end of the shot clock. We didn’t panic and just ran our offense.

I haven’t followed too close so far this year but I was getting the impression Hendrixson was showing up all of a sudden. Coach Dillon knows how to develop talent and knows the type of talent she needs. A spot up shooter compliments Brown/Greenberg who are better off using their size to get to the rim.

You still see where we can be exploited. We’re always going to have trouble with bigger and more physical teams. Our brand of basketball...the right brand of basketball that moves the ball instead of just trying to steam roll you...gives us a chance and is probably the only way you’re going to win at Drexel. We’re not going to get big school transfers and honestly I don’t want that type of player based on what i’ve seen from Spiker’s transfers on the men’s side.

I was looking at the bio of the UNCW coach and she came from ODU. 17-14 probably wasn’t good enough for those fans.

Denise Dillon broke ODU basketball when you think about it. They were indestructible before we beat them.

I can't remember if that was in the 3rd quarter when the team was struggling, or in the 4th, but I do know that it was a huge play and a real letdown for the dub, as they were playing great defense at the time. That play was a carbon copy of Bailey's buzzer beater against Northeastern.

Her shot to beat the shot clock was in the 4th when they had cut it to 9, maybe 7. It was a crucial play. Inbounding with 2/3 second left to get a good look like that was impressive.

RE: Women's Basketball 2019
Hi all-

One of my big regrets with the blog is not giving Denise's team 10% of the coverage that they deserve. We simply don't have the time to cover both teams. My initial passion was with the mens program, and they're the ones that push the needle financially and so that's where we cover. But the womens program has consistent, quality product unlike almost anything else under the Athletics umbrella, and I think the readers of this thread already know that they deserve more respect than they get.

That's why I'm very happy that Bill Torr was able to pen a midseason checkin piece for us. Here it is, and I hope/will try to at least have one or two more before tourney time.
