What's the deal with Texas G5 teams?
Was thinking about this after reading the thread about UTA starting football and tthe fire Teis thread.

Here's the W/L Record of Texas G5 teams:
Houston: 7-1
SMU: 3-5
North Texas: 7-2
UTSA: 3-5
UTEP: 0-8
Rice: 1-8
Texas State: 2-6

Overall record is 23-35 2 of the 7 have a winning record. Why aren't more G5 teams in a state like Texas able to have more success?

What you're seeing, overall, is an aberration . . . not the norm.

Except for TXST. . . regrettably, probably looking at our third consecutive 2-10 season.

I think the state is over-saturated to be honest (and I still would like UTA to field a team). There are over 20 D1 teams and the pool isn’t as large as some would like to think. Take the best players from the four teams with the worst record and you have a G5 contender.

RE: What's the deal with Texas G5 teams?
Rice, UTEP, and UTSA are all terrible this year. UTEP seems to be improving even though they remain winless this year, while Rice looks like they've about given up any interest in running a true FBS football program at all. UTSA is having a down year but the program has a lot going for it and I think the Roadrunners will definitely be a program on the rise in coming years.

SMU is going through the pains of a coaching change this year, but they'll be a contender for the AAC West title in 2019.

Texas State has every reason to be fielding a solid football team year in and year out. They're a good coaching hire away from being a contender in the SBC west every year.

North Texas has a very good coach that has the program headed in a very positive direction. They'll be a contender for the CUSA west title again next year.

Houston has one of the top 3s program in all of G5 football right now. Their problem is that they're all dressed up with nowhere to go. They'll contend for the access bowl every year.

Ranking the Texas G5 programs by potential:
1) Houston
2) SMU
3) North Texas
4) UTSA
5) Texas State
6) UTEP
7) Rice

I would say rice and utep are the norm also. TXST has been better than those 2.

20 D1 football programs in the state plus the state is recruited so hard by every team in the country it seems. It really dilutes the talent pool vs. what it could be. Go look at the roster's of teams in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, etc. and some of them are mostly Texas kids. We've been in more recruiting battles than you could believe with Iowa States and Colorado States and Kansas's. Re-watched the first half of the TXST/NMSU game last night and every single NMST player they spoke about was from Texas except one from Arizona.

I wish the teams in the state collectively did a better job of keeping our kids in state.

RE: What's the deal with Texas G5 teams?
Just in the past few years, we've lost recruiting battles for Texas HS kids against Kansas State, Iowa State, Kansas, Oregon State, Colorado State, Illinois, North Carolina, Boise, Arizona, and probably a few more. And I'm just counting kids that we had pretty good interest from (unofficial visit/official visit).

Point being, almost every school in the nation has an assistant coach (or two) who specifically recruit Texas. Yes there are a lot of kids, but there are also a lot of eye balls and offers from all over the country.

RE: What's the deal with Texas G5 teams?
1) Houston- This school still feels slighted by the Big XII, and they are doing anything to be successful. I expect them to be the next team on probabtion with bowl bans.

2) SMU- Just now starting to show life after the death penalty from 30 years ago.

3) North Texas- They are capable, but also capable of blowing it.

4) UTSA- Still in the process of developing a personality, they are only 10 years in.

5) Texas State- Administration is happy with mediocrity.

6) UTEP- Come on, it’s New Mexico, not really Texas.

7) Rice- FBS in name only, they would have been relegated if we did such things in this country.

Ultimately what it comes down to is that for most “G5” being consistently good year in and year out is difficult. We win we loose coaches, and then it comes down to the next hire. Hire good, and you keep winning, hire bad, and you could go from 10-2 to 2-10 the next season. Just look at Southern Miss or GaSo the last two years.
