Eight - Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Miami, UNC, Duke, Virginia, Notre Dame
Seven - Louisville, Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, NC State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech

For teams in the seven-team division, they play each of their division rivals, then two cross-division games, for a total of eight games.

For teams in the eight-team division, they play each of their division rivals. Six of those teams will have two-cross division games, while two teams will only have one. Those two teams would count a designated Power 5 opponent as their ninth conference game.

The implication is that Notre Dame could theoretically play Navy, USC, or Stanford as its ninth conference game. The other slot could rotate among those with an established P5 rival (Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State). Such a move might even allow the resumption of Pittsburgh-West Virginia.

Since the divisions are divided as evenly as possible, the championship game is simply the two division winners. Alignments could be changed every two years.

Good concept. To better accommodate schools with permanent rivals OOC, I'd suggest a tweak with an 8 game league schedule (4H/4A) instead of 9.

The first opponent listed after each ACC team is their permanent crossover rival. The second is a ninth P5 opponent OOC (which might be an ACC team). The third is a second OOC opponent (which also might be an ACC team, and could be a G5 team).

NC State..........UNC, Duke, East Carolina
Wake Forest.....Duke, UNC, Vanderbilt
Florida State.....Miami, Florida, Georgia Tech
Louisville..........Pitt, Kentucky
Boston College..Syracuse, Miami, Pitt
Clemson...........Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Auburn
Virginia Tech.....Virginia, Tennessee, UNC

Notre Dame......USC/Stanford, Stanford/USC, Navy
UNC.................NC State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech
Duke................Wake Forest, NC State
Miami...............Florida State, Boston College, UCF/USF
Pitt..................Louisville, West Virginia, Boston College
Syracuse..........Boston College, Rutgers, UConn/UMass
Georgia Tech....Clemson, Georgia, Florida State
Virginia............Virginia Tech, Maryland

Notre Dame plays either USC or Stanford at home every year. If they have three ACC opponents at home, the one of these two they play at home in Year 1 becomes their permanent 8th ACC game. The Irish then still have two games to schedule as they see fit.

I believe this divisional structure passes NCAA muster under current rules. I can't think of any "must have" games missing from this arrangement.

NC State and WF have played since the 1890's

Georgia Tech has played Duke every year since 1933

I'm adding another tweek, which is another game to better accommodate.

The games in bold are already games played within the division. They don't need to be added.

If Notre Dame joins, the ACC should also add West Virginia and get to 16 teams.
Also, each division should have one Florida team.

Northern Division
Boston College
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
West Virginia or Cincinnati
Louisville
Notre Dame
Virginia Tech
Miami

Southern Division
Virginia
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Duke
Wake Forest
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Florida State

You could easily slide Cincinnati into the West Virginia spot and have the same results. I would think that would be an ESPN call.
I do like the North/South split and if we went to 9 conference games we would only have to play 2 from the other side every year. Once every 4 years is enough and would virtually insure that the conference championship game would not be a duplication.

You could also guarantee each North division team would play one game in the state of North Carolina every other year. The second cross-division game would be either Virginia, Clemson, Florida State or Georgia Tech.

The main problem I see with this: it's back to the old 9-vs-8 games argument. I think you'd almost have to give FSU, GT, Clemson and Louisville the option of playing one of their cross-division games at a neutral site every year so that they could schedule 2 OOC games if they wish and still have 6 home games plus one neutral... (or if they prefer to schedule that way, they could get 7 home plus one neutral every other year - but I think the neutral site HAS to be an ACC game in order to make the numbers work).

That's the issue that WVU would absolutely have to overcome before they'd ever get an ACC invite. It's not about academics, football, basketball, state population, or any of that... it's fan behavior (IMHO).

Since we may have to wait on Notre Dame for a while (at least until they are forced to join....P4 champions only). 15 looks really good with 5 teams divisions:

Boston College, Syracuse, Pitt, Cincinnati, Louisville
UVa, Carolina, Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami
Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, NC State, Wake Forest

So which conferences are going to vote to allow the ACC to go to a 3 division format? It’s a nice thought, but it’s not going to happen, nor is there any reason to go to 15 with Cincinnati or WVU.

Why would other conferences not want a 3 division format? Other conferences want more money and to keep their members happy. If three divisions of 5 or 6 rather than 2 divisions of 7, 8, or 9, make them happy why would the be against something that generates two additional playoff football games?

Because there really are people in this world who think "it isn't enough for them to win... YOU must also lose." Such people will vote against their own best interest rather than do you any favors. I hate that there are people like that - but there are plenty of them.

So three division of six would look like this:

Northern Division
Boston College
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Cincinnati
Louisville
South Florida

Central Division
Virginia Tech
Virginia
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Vanderbilt
Florida State

Southern Division
Duke
Wake Forest
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Central Florida
Miami

Why would other conferences not want a 3 division format? Other conferences want more money and to keep their members happy. If three divisions of 5 or 6 rather than 2 divisions of 7, 8, or 9, make them happy why would the be against something that generates two additional playoff football games?

Because there really are people in this world who think "it isn't enough for them to win... YOU must also lose." Such people will vote against their own best interest rather than do you any favors. I hate that there are people like that - but there are plenty of them.

So three division of six would look like this:

Northern Division
Boston College
Syracuse
Pittsburgh
Cincinnati
Louisville
South Florida

Central Division
Virginia Tech
Virginia
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Vanderbilt
Florida State

Southern Division
Duke
Wake Forest
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Central Florida
Miami

No it wouldn’t.

For one, no conference has ever even hinted at 3 divisions being desirable. This is all message board talk.

Logistically, a conference like the Big Ten needs to have Ohio State, Michigan, and MSU together. They also need Maryland, Rutgers, and Penn State together. Unless you plan on filling the rest of their respective divisions with random western schools, it won’t work. The two can’t combine because that would be six. So the Big Ten is going to add four schools for three divisions of six? Which ones? Adding two more to have three unbalanced divisions is a scheduling nightmare.

Finally, nobody watches these teams you guys want to add to the ACC right now and they’re all currently undefeated. Please, stop the madness. It doesn’t make dollars and it doesn’t make sense! West Virginia is the only one that moves the needle for the conference on a national level and possibly UConn basketball. Nobody wants WVU and UConn doesn’t have the total package, plus they would probably hurt BC football.

As far as generating playoff games, you’re wrong there. The committee doesn’t even recognize the conference championship as a de facto playoff game, so bungling up your teams at the end of the season does no good for anyone.

Question is, when will UNC@Chap field an ACC football team? 07-coffee3
