FSU doesn't need that. They've already got a solid football program. They need a Saban/Meyer/Dabo next level coach who can take a top 25 program and make it a National Champion. Jimbo Fischer may have been elite, but he's gone.

But who can they realistically get that's a proven elite coach? Most of the other big names are already with other elite programs. You pull someone like Norvell or Fuentes and it's just as much of a gamble as Taggart. At least Taggart has recruiting connections in Florida.

So I'm sympathetic to FSU's choice, but I still hope they fall on their face because as a UCF fan a generally root for failure at all the other Florida programs. Not a hater, but we compete for croots, fans, and local media attention

Why didn’t FSU take a look at the NFL before settling on Taggart?? Would John Harbaugh (John is the coach of the Ravens & is Jim’s brother) look at coaching FSU???

7-5 at Oregon.

And now at FSU. The guy has yet to leave a place with a winning record and has never won a title of anything.

...??
Yeah...

But let it go. He's on a roll...

Taggart was close to getting fired at USF in his 3rd season until his team did a "180" in 2015 during the 5th game of the season. Could be a coincidence but it appears his first year's teams either stink or underperfom.

Taggart also brought on board Joe Kinnan as a "volunteer senior offensive consultant" prior to that season.

Random side note:
You mentioned college coaches currently working in the NFL and my mind wandered to Jim Tressel. I thought he might be a consultant still....

After a quick google search... I discovered

Jim Tressel, the Old Sweater Vest, is now the President of Youngstown State University.

I've never understood the Taggart infatuation.

Has a 47-50 record as head coach, has never won a conference title, has never won a bowl game, and has only had one season with 10+ wins out of eight seasons coaching. Then he gets hired at Florida State!

It's mind-blowing.

I was going to say, "Someone needs to get the Taggart Bus GiF…"

Truth be told, this looks A LOT like Taggart's pattern at USF. Those early days were brutal. The trouble is I don't see FSU cutting him the slack that USF did.

The record is deceiving b/c he took over bad programs at WKU and USF and a great program gone bad at Oregon. FSU is a lot like Oregon where they needed a culture change.

Taggart still has a lot to prove but I think he will be successful long term at FSU.

He doesn't have his players yet , despite a ton of 5-star talent on the roster. He also doesn't have a Quinton Flowers to cover up a lot of what was wrong with his offensive scheme.

His history has been to struggle in year one and then really turn it around in years two and three after bringing in his players and tweaking his offense to suit his roster and league.

Their biggest problem right now is defensively. Offenses are always harder to implement and take a while to start rolling if the scheme is sound, but defensively you are seeing kids blatantly not knowing where to line up. With the athletes they have they should be able to cover up kids being out of position...but teams are figuring out how to take advantage. He should not have low-balled Jim Leavitt who was willing to follow him from Oregon if offered a better contract. Leavitt is a defensive wunderkind....that really gets players to play hard and buy into his system. People undervalue defense nowadays with all the crazy video game scores...but at the end of the day your defense has stop teams to have a chance to win. If the season goes South, Taggart will be able to change DC, cost be damned...unlike at USF where money was a concern to obtain a quality replacement.

Taggart's problem is that FSU fans will turn him much more quickly than they did at USF. If he can beat Florida that will qualm some concerns in Tallahassee for sure.

Agree with most of this. I think FSU leadership likes him a lot and he will be there a while. He is also getting what he wants facility wise. Now if in 2019 he is still losing let's talk.

Taggart will turn it around at FSU. Something will click and they will take off offensively.

That's what I've been saying about UT with Herman but for whatever reason they just can't seem to put it together.
