Last years NMSU team and bowl game was an anomaly for them. It was their first winning season in like 15 years and their first bowl in 57 years. They are who they are, I wish them all the luck, but they are who they are. But unlike Idaho, NMSU has an FBS stadium, and whenever the next round of realignment happens, they will land in another conference.

RE: Week Zero Games
My review of the week zero games

1) Hawai'i at Colorado State. Something is up. Hawai'i was horrendous last year, Colorado State was actually pretty good. Hawai'i goes to Ft Collins and demolishes the Rams. This game wasn't as close as the final score. Unless this is an 'oopsie' game where CSU just didn't show up, this might portend some interesting changes in the MWC this year.

2) Wyoming at NMSU. Throwing out a garbage time NMSU TD at the end, they had no offense at all. Wyoming looked like a top level P5 and NMSU looked like a road FCS team playing them. Good crowd though.

3) Prairie View at Rice. Ouch. Rice escapes over a team from the bottom of FCS due to some late game heroics and a botched punt by PVAM. This looks bad, very bad for Rice.

4) Duquesne at UMass. UMass got it done. Duquesne is a FCS from a bad conference, but Duquesne isn't as bad of a FCS as one might think. They're at least as good as PVAM. So, you could argue that UMass>Rice and probably by a significant margin.

Week Zero Games
My only take away is the Pigs are going to get a road OOC win this year and they’ll thinknits a big deal.

UMass is never a great team, but they are always underrated. GS beating them would be an upset.

GS fans will tell you that this game is circled as one that will tell us a lot about our team. No one is expecting an easy W there, save a few of the perpetually delusional fans.

Duquesne is where my SIL works. (He's in admin). They're horrendous and their stadium is almost a stadium.

Duquesne has some pretty interesting features. It’s in downtown Pittsburgh, the soccer stadium (this may be where their football team plays too) is nearly on a cliff that drops down to a highway which drops again to the river, and they have a tunnel that goes under campus.

NMSU still has a very favorable schedule for becoming bowl eligible. They only play 2 teams that were bowl eligible (and Wyoming was - by far - the best team from last year they'll face). In addition to Wyoming, they'll play at Utah State (who they beat in a bowl last year)

Liberty 2x - Liberty went 6-5 in FCS last year
Texas State
New Mexico
UTEP
Alcorn State
ULL
Georgia Southern
BYU
Minnesota

Basically, if NMSU beats UTEP and Texas State (which were some of the worst teams in FBS last year), Alcorn State and Liberty twice....they only need one win from ULL, Georgia Southern, New Mexico, BYU, and Minnesota (all of whom failed to qualify for a bowl last year) to become bowl eligible. Unfortunately for them, they'll need to qualify for a bowl AND hope that some conference doesn't use up its bowl slots too to actually go to a bowl.

NMSU plays an eye popping 8 teams that won fewer than 4 FBS games last year and 7 teams that won 2 or fewer FBS games last year.

After what I saw last night I feel pretty good about our chances to beat NMSU.

I know Wyoming's defense is good, but I think people are underestimating how big of a loss Rogers, Rose, and Scott were for that offense. They couldn't even begin to move the ball last night.

NMSU will go 3-9 or so this year.

They looked awful. I know they aren't in the SBC anymore but it still kind of upset me to see them look that bad.

Several of us realize they lost a generational QB and RB at the least, and possibly WR as well. They had a really good combination there. All of that combined to get them to 6 wins to make a bowl for the first time in a lot of our lifetimes.

Once again you don't just replace a QB that's meant a lot to your offense right away....losing your feature back at the same time puts pressure on the new QB that a good run game can help take away.

This is why I'm looking at App and Troy pretty hard as well. App has Moore who will help whoever their new QB is, but Troy lost both Silvers and Chunn.....there's going to be some stumbles in there for both of them.

Troy seems to think that they'll not miss a beat. Well we shall find out soon enough because they host Boise and travel to Nebraska in a 14 day stretch to start the season.

But back to NMSU. Wyoming could be really that good. Somehow I think that its a bit of both..Wyoming is better than average, and NMSU really has some issues on offense.

They beat our co conference champs last years as well. As of now any Belt team beating them might be considered an upset.

I think Duquesne is a limited scholarship FCS basically a glorified club team. One of those that are just in it for the basketball money like most FCS programs are. Nothing really to tell from that game. This Sat will tell us what UMASS really is if they get rolled by a mediocre P5 like Boston College.

If they hang in or win against Boston, GS season is likely not to start out to well.

Wyoming might have the best defense in all of the G5. NMSU will be better. Their defense is quite good, actually.

Aggie Memorial Stadium is an absolute dump. That facility won't help them get into another league. Not by a long shot.

Only a few vocal fans feel that way. The rest of us know there are lots of questions to be answered.

I've been saying all year TXST will beat NMSU. They don't have Rose III anymore and it is in SM.

Well, unless Wyoming is the second coming of Alabama, I think you guys have a real shot at this point. I'd probably say y'all would be favored, if the game was next week. Y'all also have some kinks to work out too.

For most of the game NMSU reminded me of the time FAU went to Michigan State and didn't have so much as one first down in the entire game. Except NMSU was playing at home, and against Wyoming ( a team that lost 5 games last year, and was an OT win at home vs a bad Hawai'i team and a end of the game 3 pt win vs Colorado State away from not even qualifying for a bowl).

I said something like that on another thread and everyone jumped on me lol. Not sure how anyone would say otherwise, but I guess it is better than a few stadiums in the SBC.
