I'm sure that your father in law is a terrific guy, and he and I probably would enjoy sitting together at a ballgame or a bar.

But I don't enjoy paying for his Medicare -- nor for the mushrooming administrative costs that go with it. Nor do I don't think that my (or anyone else's) kids should be burdened with his ever-increasing social-security disbursement -- at levels exponentially higher than what he paid in.

Bottom line--There is no "free" anything. To make something "free" for Paul, you have to rob Peter. There is no other way. Government doesn't give anybody anything without taking it from someone else. It doesn't create wealth. That's where government differs from a free market. Free markets and private property foster the creation of wealth. So they make a bigger pie, which means bigger pieces for everyone.

Now, what Europe does differs from what we do in two ways:
1) Everybody benefits, they don't "means test" nearly as much as we do, so everybody gets to be Paul; and
2) Their taxes are flatter and broader than ours, so everybody pays, so everybody gets to be Peter.

UBI and Bismarck health care funded by a consumption tax share those two attributes with what Europe does.
