New York Daily News To Cut Nearly Half It's Staff In Round Of Mass Layoffs
Quote:The New York Daily News on Monday announced that it is cutting half its editorial staff in a round of massive layoffs at the 99-year-old tabloid.
"We are fundamentally restructuring the Daily News,” an email to staff from the paper's new owner, Tronc, reads. “We are reducing today the size of the editorial team by approximately 50 percent and re-focusing much of our talent on breaking news — especially in areas of crime, civil justice and public responsibility.”
“The decisions being announced today reflect the realities of our business and the need to adapt an ever-changing media environment,” Tronc added in the email. “They are not a reflection on the significant talent that is leaving today. Let there be no doubt: these colleagues are highly valued and will be missed.”
The email adds that human resources will inform employees of their status by the end of the day.
Included in the layoffs is Editor-in-Chief Jim Rich, a harsh critic of President Trump.
Rich took to Twitter on Monday to signal the layoffs would be happening.
"If you hate democracy and think local governments should operate unchecked and in the dark, then today is a good day for you," wrote Rich

Freedom of the press meets the free market. You are free to produce biased poorly supported "news" and the people are free to ignore your product as the worthless drivel it is.

It's seems that #Walkaway is producing results. Many here won't admit it but why was the old Trump hating editor get fired along with the others? And why are they going less into politics than before? I guess if you just deal with community and state problems and leave the TDS behind you'll get people buying again if not for just the coupons from supermarkets. Hey, you gotta pay the bills.

Exactly what I was thinking.... ESPN having the same shrinking pains as well for very similar reasons.....
Now that Jemele Hill no longer gets face time on ESPN, I have found myself watching a little more again. Its not nearly as bad now..... if they could just pull that trigger on Stephen A next.....
For what it is worth Olberman was on SportsCenter last night and he wasn't half bad - ZERO political points, just sports..... refreshing.

I like ole Stephen A. When I feel like getting yelled at I'll turn on his radio show
Seriously though, I never watch ESPN but I listen to their radio network most days. They are generally very very conscious about staying apolitcal. This is from an interview with SAS not to long ago, he seems to understand being successful does not involve pissing off 50% of the country and considering the target market of ESPN, the majority of your audience.
Quote:SN: You guys like to play hardball, so how do you feel about President Trump ripping ESPN, Jemele Hill and protesting NFL players?
SAS: Do I believe the President should be wasting his time commenting about stuff like that? No. Do I believe the President has been a bit juvenile in his behavior? Yes he has. Having said that, it’s one thing to attack what he does, it’s an entirely different matter to attack him. When you attack him, then we are stepping out of our lane. We are a sports network. We have an obligation to wake up every day with the mindset that we not only speak for ourselves but we speak on behalf of the brand. It is not a brand that we own. It is a brand that employs us. It has entrusted us to represent it just as much as we care about representing ourselves. So with that in mind, we have to be cognizant of all those things.
Yes, the President is going to say what he has to say. Yes, he’s going to venture in our lane to the point where it’s apropos for us to respond. But we also need to be cognizant of the fact it’s incumbent upon us to leave it there and not extend beyond that point. We’re a sports network. You become successful. You sustain a level of success by giving people what they expect. By, figuratively speaking, ‘playing the hits.’ Not deviating too far away from what people turn on the channel and tune in for to hear. As long as we remember those kinds of things, then it’s going to lend itself to us being successful as opposed to us losing our bearings because we get caught up in our emotions, and we do things that ultimately sacrifice the brand and ourselves just to react to something for 15 seconds or 15 minutes. We have to be smarter than that — even if the President doesn’t appear that way sometimes.
