If he had listened to Barry Goldwater from the start...He would have ended that war quickly. Instead he ***** footed around and got 10's of thousands of men killed unnecessarily. Remember...Goldwater said in the beginning to mine Hiaphong Harbor and blockage them. That is eventually what we did to end that schit.

Johnson should have won this poll and it shouldn't have been close.

1. Escalated the Viet Nam War and got thousands of America's young men killed with the total mismanagement of the war. There is a special place in Hell for him for that one.
2. Largely responsible for the welfare state. Special place in Hell #2.
3. Fell asleep at the wheel regarding the USSR, allowing them to gain strength and some level on equality of influence. Not totally attributable to him, but the Soviets really stepped up their game while Johnson was in charge.
4. Had a lack of understanding in regard to the causes and effects of civil unrest and was impotent in dealing with it.


I would have Carter as second with Obama third over George II.

I place Johnson as the worst only because he killed so many in an unnecessary war in VN. I place Oblunder second because he almost killed democracy with a corrupt administration. Thank God that the Constitution saved us. Otherwise, we'd probably change our flag to a sickle where the stars should be...or maybe the Muslim symbol...or both...and him still in power.

He was a pathetic President but the last guy out usually doesn't leave with solid ratings since the impact takes time to appreciate.

My vote would be for Bush. Bush was a terrible President, probably among the bottom 3.

Largely because he focused so much on Vietnam that he neglected other things. Fortunately Reagan was able to stem the tide.

Agree on the other points, they are just not enough to get him past Carter or Obama in my book. About on a par with GWB, whose focus on Iraq caused him to let things get away on several fronts (China, home mortgages) in pretty much the same manner.

There's a good discussion to be had here, but it's worth noting that the article and study it's based on are four years old. I don't think the list should change a ton other than moving Carter up, but it should be mentioned.

He started the re-enslaving of blacks by the democrats. He knew he couldn’t keep the status quo so decided to go after their votes with a Santa Claus mentality. Brilliant really. The dems still have them on the plantation today 55 years later.

Johnson's mismanagement of Vietnam caused (3) additional moon missions to be scrapped as well as a manned mission to orbit Venus.

This guy agrees it is LBJ.

He does have the Civil Rights legislation to partially offset Vietnam, race riots, drugs and rising crime. Obama has no offsetting positives. Carter's Camp David happened in spite of him, not because of him.

Bush I viewed more favorably than Reagan? I know it's splitting hairs on the small percentage guys, but still.

Nixon did more to harm the office of the presidency than any president in history. I'd put him right behind LBJ. Carter was dealt a really crappy hand but didn't do much to dig himself out of the hole. Seems like a well intention man but ultimately unsuccessful as president.

Bush 1 had a tough term with a big transition after the Cold War, Iraq, and the recession that he was slow to react to as well.

That being said I don't see Obama as a very good president but he doesn't seem to have many bad blunders except for maybe healthcare depending on how important that is to you.

Going way back Herbert Hoover was a shockingly bad president and probably the worst overall.
