New Kick-off Rule in the NCAA
I apologize in advance if this topic has already been discussed in another thread. I was talking to my son today and he mentioned how this new rule will impact game strategy for the upcoming season. For those who aren’t familiar with this year’s rule change; any fair catch, on kick-offs, fielded inside the 25 yard-line will be treated as a touch back and spotted on the 25. Clearly this rule is designed to reduce injuries. However, I would be willing to bet that within, let’s say, 5-years, kick-offs will be eliminated from the game all together and, all change of possessions after a scoring drive, will simply be spotted on the 25 yard-line.

Thoughts?

Kickoffs are exciting but I don't understand why they're doing this "death by a thousand cuts" approach. If they are too dangerous then just get rid of them already.

Maybe touch football is the future of NCAA.

Kickoffs are often the most exciting part of the game.

Actually could bring more excitement, as fair catches only occurre on short kickoffs. So may see more high onside kickoffs, or hybrids in the middle section, and guys will field them instead of fair catching.

I love kickoffs. I loved blocking for them and covering them. It's such an exciting way to start a possession. It would be a shame if they got rid of them. If they get rid of kickoffs, they need to find a fun way to put the ball in play.

Thanks for the heads-up on this rule change. I wonder what your son/teammates/coaches think about it, or the strategy involved. As brovol mentioned, it might be interesting to see some high kickoffs. If you made the kickoff a free kick, and guys could punt it, that might make it more interesting strategery-wise.

What if the ball fires out of a cannon at the 50, foosball style? The collisions would be EPIC!!!!

Freaking brilliant!!!!!!

Only issue is that in foosball there is always some side-loading going on to make the ball drift one way or another. Needs to be equal.

RE: New Kick-off Rule in the NCAA
Idea:

Rugby scrum to start the game and second half. No coin tosses. Get that second string offensive line in the game and have an ultimate hogfest at the 50. No collisions, just power vs. power, 10 on 10.

After scores, the other team just starts at the 20.

I don't really have too much of a problem if they want to get rid of kickoffs, but something would have to replace the option of an onside kick.

How 'bout a dance off? Coaches, too? Although I wouldn't want to see Lester, or Dantonio, dance...
