I know you're not used to following teams with elite talent, little buddies, but some of us ain't.
You're not in Conference USA anymore. Back when Cheatin' Cal was just rollin' balls out for wins, your conference was several levels lower than the Missouri Valley...
And Shocker fans know very well what it's like to have a roster full of future NBA players. Check your history before you open your trap.

This board is going to be a lot of fun come the remaining off season and new season(s). I bet Memphis stomps a mudhole in Wichita....in football.

Good Point. You don’t even have to coach if you have 4* and 5* players.
You just posted, word for word, John Calipari's personal mission statement.
Memphis is now on the level of Kentucky. CHECK!
Penny Hardaway is John Calipari. CHECK!
Dis gon' be gooooood!

I know it was before Gregg Marshall invented basketball but John Calipari was here at Memphis for 9 years and did recruit multiple 4 and 5 star recruits while he was here.

I think he used to be. As did Dan Wolken. We've had some good writers. Idiots. But talented with words.
Did the Commercial-Appeal ever give him a column? It could have been called Wolken in Memphis.
I'm pretty sure he had a blog (back when blogs were things) on the CA website where he'd post stuff that wasn't column worthy that he called "Wolken in Memphis"

He did have a column his last year here before he moved on to that iPad news outlet that Rupert Murdoch started. That only lasted a few years then USA Today picked him up.

Like I said, you aren't in the low-major CUSA anymore. Had you been in the mid-major MoValley during Cal's heyday, you would have faced significantly stiffer competition night in and night out...

Lol, he rose to the #2 columnist at the CA, but knew Geoff Calkins wasn't going anywhere and moved on. It's worked out well for him. Many Tiger fans have a love/hate view of him. The story goes, as some here prolly can recall first hand, that at one point his hatred of John Calipari ran so deep that he high fived people court side when Memphis lost in the champ game.
Fellow Tiger fans please don't take the bait of those trying to derail... pretty please. Believe it or not, there are folks from other teams/conferences interested in this hire and it'd be nice to have one thread with useful info not go down the drain.
It would be nice if the mods would notice that the same 3 posters derail every single thread into a smack thread or take it off topic when everyone else just wants to talk about sports.

Stepping around land mines, I think those stats bring up a salient point. CUSA never really hindered Memphis from attaining top seeds. They weren't penalized so to speak or lumped in with conference mates. However, they and perhaps Gonzaga, are the exceptions not the rule. When you look at mass media from the time, the Tigers were never considered mid-major meaning they were included with major programs in articles, blogs, and segments on everything from coaching to recruiting rankings and everything in between.

It helped that we started our run right after the Big East raid. CUSA, even after the raid, still had some name cred due to Louise's FF run the year before they left, Marquette's FF run a year before that plus Cincy's 10 year run up to that point.
It wasnt the same conference after they left but it had some name recognition that helped.

OK so we would've won by 10 instead of 20 most games. Even then we took our foot off the gas and coasted.

2001- No NCAA (Not counting NIT)
2002- No NCAA (Not counting NIT)
2003- #7 Seed

2013- #6 Seed
2014- #8 Seed

2018- No NCAA
Wichita State:
2000 No NCAA

2003 No NCAA
2004 No NCAA
2005 No NCAA
2006 #7 Seed

2015 #7 Seed
2016 #11 Seed

Wanna do all-time draft picks too since that's a big talking point for them?
Memphis: 35
Wichita State: 17
Sweet 16?
Memphis: 11
Wichita State: 6
Elite 8?
Memphis 8
Wichita State 4
Final 4?
Memphis 3
Wichita State 2
NCAA Champ games?
Memphis 2
Wichita State 0
Conference Championships?
Memphis 18
Wichita State 13
All Time NCAA Appearances?
Memphis 26
Wichita State 15
So yes, the last few years you have been a better overall program, but nothing compared all time. UConn and Cincy put us both to shame. Since you guys came to the AAC you have acted like you were the best program in the history of college basketball and you're not. You have 4 Programs in the AAC alone that are better than yours. You are having a good run. Keeping your coach and sustaining it is the key. Just enjoy the ride because it can end at anytime. Just like a Program that has been struggling can make the right hire and get back on track.

Thanks for that. I wasn't clear about MSU NCAA history vs. WSU NCAA history. That's why last year's victory on the road was so delicious and next year's likely two victories will be nice.

It's very possible. Penny's first season. We don't even know what the team is gonna look like as of right now. Who stays, who goes, who comes in and so on. No one is taking anything away from what you've accomplished or what CGM has accomplished. Also, congrats on beating Memphis, it must be a HUGE accomplishment for you and your program.

2017: #10 seed
in 5 full seasons WSU was able to get one good seeding out of the MVC lol...I'm not impressed.
OK so we would've won by 10 instead of 20 most games. Even then we took our foot off the gas and coasted.
I mean you could also list the other seeds we obtained to be fair. Let's do both programs since 2000.

That's all well and good but the original claim that Cal just rolled the ball out to his 4 and 5 stars and let them go to work required some context which I unselfishly provided.
Back when Cheatin' Cal was "rollin' balls out" and murdering his conference mates, CUSA was to the MoValley like the MoValley was to the ACC. It was a giant amongst babies. While there's no argument that your teams were strong, and your players flashy, you likely benefited a tad from pummeling them by 40 every night when it came to seeding time.
The point is; even if Cal came back to Memphis, loading rosters with NBA players, there would be no "rollin' out the ball" and collecting easy wins in this league. The AAC is orders of magnitude better than CUSA - as was the MVC back in the day.
