This year
I think if Nova and Xavier can win out this week I'd go so far to say this year has been the best year for the NBE..... Just can't have one of the top seeds fall in 1st weekend.

yeah a good win for the Hall. Tough test for them on Saturday- but one that would be just gravy for the Big East IMO if Nova and Xavier have advanced.

Congrats to Villanova, Xavier, Seton Hall and Butler making it into the 2nd round.

I thought Providence would win against Texas A&M. But they lost a close game 73-69. Solid season Friars.

I Was hoping Creighton could win one game in the tournament but they haven't been looking that strong since they lost Krampelj to a season ending injury.
That's the 2nd year in a row the Bluejays lost a key player midseason, faded down the stretch and were knocked out in the first round of the tournament.

Seton Hall with a great effort- but just when you are in the 8/1 setup- it's a brutal setup for sure.

Tomorrow with 2 huge games.

RE: This year
Good season Seton Hall. I expected it to be even better than a record of 22-12 (10-8 Big East). I thought they would reach 12 Big East wins. Losing twice to Marquette and once to Georgetown didn't help. And they were unable to win a game in the Big East tournament. Thus the 8 seed and the 2nd round matchup with 1 seed Kansas (losing 83-79).

yeah they were IMO the big disappointment of the year. Just couldn't put it together then stuck with a brutal matchup in March.

Butler had a solid season. Picked to finish 8th in the Big East standings by the coaches preseason, they lost 76-73 to #2 seed Purdue, unable to reach the Sweet 16.

Marquette is still alive in the NIT, defeating Oregon in the 2nd round 101-92. Rowsey with 29 points.

18-4 run kills Xavier. Ouch. Just when the league can really put it's best foot forward- something like this happens.

RE: This year
It's been a crazy tournament. The PAC didn't get one team out of the first weekend. Virginia becomes first team to lose to a #16. MSU loses to Syracuse. As disappointing as it is for Xavier, it still doesn't change the success the Big East is, or has become. Tough loss for sure, but there have been a plethora of them this year. Can't single out one team, one conference, and leave out the rest. It's why this time of year is so exciting.

RE: This year
tonight clinched that this year will be best case equal to last year in terms of tourney units. Right now have 11 with 2 more possible from Nova. Last year had 13.

18- 11-13
17- 13
16- 12
15- 11
14- 6

what's so tough for the Big East is unless Nova does make the run- this would be 4 out of 5 years where the league didn't meet expectations in March.

Disappointing performance by Xavier. Half of the remaining teams are from the ACC and Big 12.

There are many strong programs that have failed to meet expectations in March. Indiana and UCLA have not made a Final Four in over ten years. Kansas has recently struggled to get back to a Final Four. Purdue is notorious at not going far. So is Cincinnati. There are many others.

The reality is that favorites losing in March is what adds to college basketball - not takes away. It creates UMBC, Loyola (IL), VCU, Butler, George Mason and countless others. Is it frustrating that your favorites sometimes don't go as far as expected? Of course, but it doesn't "damage" the perception of programs or conferences. Getting there is the most important thing - it means you have a chance to advance. There are no guarantees for anything, and every game you face a tough test.

The Big East perception is still very strong, despite yesterday's outcome. Nova has carried the weight for sure - but the league was strong enough to get two #1 bids this year. That is still incredible.

RE: This year
I think to act like not performing in March has no consequences is rather naive. I mean and you know it- there's always questions by folks on the Big East. Always has been since the split. You don't think if the Big East was 12-5 instead of 5-12 that the perception would be much different? I sure as hell do.

Look at the P6.. Here's the rd 2 records for those 6 conferences last 5 years
ACC 17-10
Big Ten 13-8
Pac 12 10-4
Big 12 10-4
SEC 10-7
Big East 5-12

When folks complain that the Big East doesn't get respect in the polls, why do you think that is? It's March. Those other conferences get the benefit of the doubt that the Big East doesn't get.

RE: This year
If Xavier made it to the 2nd weekend, the Big East would have met expectations for the year. With them losing, the year becomes a bit of a disappointment.

Overrall, the past 5 years have been a success . But when some fans says the Big East is the 2nd or 3rd best conference, that is not really true.

And the SEC is quickly improving. It's no longer just Kentucky and Florida's conference as it was a few years ago.

RE: This year
How conferences have won an NCAA Championship over the past five years? If Villanova wins again this year, would it still be a disappointing year?

The folks that truly complain about the Big East again fans from lower conferences, specifically one that we broke away from. Those complaints have no merit.

No it wouldn't be. But then again, Nova has to do it- and do it with about as hard of a run as possible. Quite possibly West Virginia, Purdue, Duke, and Kentucky.

And you didn't answer the question. Don't you think there would be a difference in perception if the Big East was 12-5 in rd 2 of the NCAA tourney last 5 years instead of being 5-12?
