RE: Will Penny disappoint the City of Memphis?
For the sanity of the city of Memphis....

For the sanity of Memphis basketball fans....

Whether you agree or disagree with Penny's hire....

It's time to play the Penny card.

Whether it's two years or 20 years from now, the next coaching hire will not have the Ghost of Penny Hardaway looking over his shoulder. The city and fans can move on.

im just guarded about all of it

That's probably the floor, right? I mean, we expect Penny and his staff should be able to recruit at the level of Josh. Get the local guys he wants, and plug in a few others here and there. Penny may or may not be able to game-coach, develop, run a program. Josh really couldn't do those 3 things. So that's the floor.

However, the other thing Josh struggled with was building a team with leadership. It led to chemistry issues, staff turnover, and player transfers. This risk is lessened because Penny will almost definitely get the respect and attention of his guys. It's doubtful players will transfer because of the coach.

So while the coaching aspect is an unknown, and it could turn out like Pastner (doubt it, but possible), chances are that it will be something better based on shown leadership ability.

Memphians, Tiger fans, players respect Penny. That is a good starting point.

If Cincinnati ever beats us 4 times the same season, it may bring back some not-so-pleasant memories of his time here!

I don't know, expectations comes up a lot. That, in reality, is how each of us decide whether something is either bad, good, or somewhere in between. The level of expectations Memphis fans tend to have (and at least one on this thread has already mentioned competing for NC's regularly) when they perceive a "Wow" hire like Penny is probably not where Penny would like to begin, if it were up to him. Unfortunately, it isn't.

But people are pointing at Pennys high school success when he has a huge talent advantage over his competition...Because of this His high school success doesn't prove he can coach it proves he has the best talent. I just don't believe he will be able to out recruit the blue bloods so there will be times he will have to outcoach or develop players to beat them

Resume?
It is obvious that Penny can attract high level D1 caliber players, so recruiting should not be a problem.
He should be able to connect with these high level players because he is doing it now.
He knows basketball because he was very successful as a player as an amateur and a professional. He has the personality that helps him teach the skills to young men.

In my mind, the only question to be answered is how he will handle the business side of the job. He has been pretty successful so far in life at that aspect of his career, so I am confident he can be successful here too.

I was just in a busy restaurant eating lunch. Three out of four tables around me were talking Tigers basketball. While UTK was playing on the telly.

The program is not dead. Lots of work to do. He will have to win at a high level to get it back to what it was. But there's still a lot of interest in this town.

ALWAYS! Memphis Bball, when good, is as good as it gets in Hoops....There's no better feeling than matching up with blue bloods in the dance and knowing that we belong...

Yep. We have nothing to lose at this point. It was either continue to drive the bball program into the ground with Tubby, losing more $$ annually, or take a (big) risk to stop the bleeding. Bringing in someone like Forbes wouldn't have done the trick.

It may wind up not working out - we all know that, but if Penny doesn't let ego get in the way of asking for help AND keeps things above board, it could be a better turnaround than any other coaching possibility.
