Pearl should get National Coach of the Year, hands down. Auburn has been brutal in hoops, basically forever.

Has anyone else noticed this?

His tram is leading by 25 points and he gets a technical. Seth Greenberg had fun with that.

But I do think his screaming has reached an entirely different level recently. Gary Clark even make a comment in an article on The Athletic that his advice to the young guys is don't even look at Cronin when you make a mistake because his screaming will throw you off your game.

I've been on this board long enough to demonstrate I'm not a troll but I have had the thought that playing tight (and not to lose) in big games could be a byproduct of his sideline demeanor...

You're a good poster JFlight. I would point out that Bob Huggins was worse on the sidelines than Mick. Folks loved that about him and the players respected him. Bobby Knight was probably the worst and there are others as examples. Coaches, not unlike others in the profession of teaching, law enforcement, judges, the person at the window you pay your parking ticket fine at, etc., all come with different personalities and communication abilities. Mick may yell and act demonstrative on the sidelines more than the average coach but from my vantage point he has been doing this for quite some time. I can't imagine what it's like in his shoes with the desire to win and build on the legacy of Cincinnati Bearcats basketball. He knows too that this can be a special season if it plays just right. If he does something verbally abusive or strikes a player then that is an entirely different matter. I think playing tight is more of a function of lack of execution and more conservative plays when the stakes are high. However, I can remember some games in recent years when Deonta, SK, Troy etc., were given a play to win it on a last second shot. Sometimes the ball went swish and other times it did not.

Yes.

And he even got a technical foul when UC was up by 25 last night.

right at the final whistle when he started to walk to shake hands he did the you wanna piece of me hand gestures and called somebody a f'ing ahole (you can see it in the highlights uc posted)

seemed like a really odd thing to do at the end of that game. i dont know if it was at the ref or maybe a fan shouted something.

I didn't see that specifically, but broadly speaking he doesn't appear to enjoy his work much these days. Maybe he feels the drumbeat of pressure to win conference and advance in the tournament. He's certainly not oblivious to what fans say or write. Maybe he wants out of here, feeling he's done all that he's capable of doing with this program. Or maybe there are just other life matters that concern him off the court.

I'm also a big believer that at some point the players just tune out the high volume, profanity laced tirades. Not sure those have any impact this late in the cycle. Maybe that's why we've often seen a very different UC team in March than November.

At this point, it could be the players just want it to be over. That could explain, in part, a history of underperforming in conference and NCAA tourneys.

RE: Cronin's sideline demeanor
I have long thought that Cronin yells and screams too much. But so do about half (or more?) of the good college coaches out there. And he isn't doing it any more than he always did (except maybe for a little bit there after his brain almost exploded). I wonder what some of you guys are watching sometimes? Loving the armchair Freud stuff though. Cronin doesn't appear to be enjoying his work--sure, sure.

I saw it. Just shows how this site has become the CNN of college hoops. Or maybe it’s the other way around.

Based on early indications...Cincy is one of the few Top 20 programs not implicated in this FBI exposed corruption. And what’s the topic of the day? Cronin yells too much.

RE: Cronin's sideline demeanor
If Cronin didn't yell, people would be on him for not putting enough energy into his coaching. There is no winning combination.

I think he should have definitely been held accountable for his spat with Macura earlier this year (even though he is unequivocally the biggest douche in the tri-state area) and that time his own players had to hold him back from a ref... TV Teddy, I believe. Other than that, there are a lot of coaches who are similar in style. The only folks I remember transferring out was Jermaine Lawrence, Ge'lawn Guyn, and Quadri Moore. The guys that want to play hard stay.

Am I the only one that was thinking that he demeanor on the sideline was a problem for him. I mean it was not to long ago he had to stop because of that thing in his head. If he keeps this up it might just come back.

I love reading stuff on this board, but after a loss I usually have to stay away for a few days because I get no joy from reading this "sky is falling/nitpicking" type of stuff.
