Bad NIU Coaches
Where to start.
Lee Corso - Never wanted to be here from Day 1.
Charlie Sadler - Was he the guy who focused on Canadian players?
Ricardo Patton - Did start 4-0 in the MAC one year, rumor was he never coached a practice. Many players left.
Rob Judson - Technical foul for too many players on the floor after a timeout.
Women's Soccer Coach hired by Phillips who trained for the Olympics and had her husband as an assistant then left before really trying to turn the program around.
Montgomery - Eight years and counting under .500 in the MAC
There are many more I am sure.
Please fill me in.

HINT: On the football side, it's difficult to Carey on with this coach.

In hindsight the reverand Judson was not so bad. I wonder if over time he would have elevated the program. He was better than his successors for sure.

Completely agree. I think the seeds for development were there.

Absolutely wrong on women's soccer coach, not that anyone on here cares about anything other than football and basketball.
Marci Miller --- part of legendary St. Charles soccer family -- took over after six straight years with six or fewer wins and went 5-11-2 in 2005, 8-11-2 in 2006 but reached MAC tourney championship, and 10-5-5 in 2007 with a third-place MAC season record and reaching semifinals of MAC tourney. Was clearly revitalizing program and succeeding in recruiting. Wasn't just "training", but was a member of the U.S. Women's National Team, however Phillips refused to boost budget at the same time Baylor came offering big money. No different than Kill or Doeren being hired away
In second year (2009), Miller got Baylor to the Big 12 tourney championship. BU made second round of NCAA in 2011, won Big 12 tourney and reached Sweet 16 in 2012. Had first child and became co-head coach with husband Paul Jobson; initially shifted to assistant coach and volunteer coach until they had their fourth son. Her record at Baylor (2008-2014) is 78-43-24; add three NIU seasons and career record for 10 years as head coach is 101-70-29 (.680). Paul's record going into his fourth season at top is 36-19-8. While revitalizing Baylor soccer, a $1.5 million gift became part of $3.3 million soccer center opened in 2015 --- new field plus 14,500-square-foot building including a coaches suite and locker and training rooms dedicated to the soccer program, encompassing approximately 2,300 square feet and including 35 player lockers. The facility also provides the team and other sports housed in the Turner Complex with a 5,000-square-foot weight room and visiting team locker rooms, as well as public restrooms and areas for concessions and laundry. Clearly not a "bad coach."

Neither Corso or Sadler had any intention to stay at NIU, but Charlie recruited Canadians and several juco thugs.

Definitely add Emory Luck to the list considering he took over from arguably the best men's basketball coach NIU ever had in Tom Jorgensen. Huskies went from best (38-12) back-to-back years (71-72 and 72-73) to Luck going 8-17, 8-15, and 5-21.

Why did Jorgensen leave and who hired Luck?
What was his experience before NIU?

Rob was restrictive in his approach to taking kids if he didn't feel they were religious enough. There were 2 kids in particular he could have signed that both had great college careers (Texas Tech and Marquette). Both wanted to come here, but he won't sign them. This is first hand knowledge from a former assistant under Judson.

He recruited like he was at Wheaton College, not a large public institution.

What was his experience before NIU?

This was during time when racial unrest on college campuses spilled over to athletic departments, specifically in number of minority coaches.

Illinois State had just made Will Robinson the first black D-I basketball coach in history.

Jorgensen hired Luck, who as I recall had some HS coaching experience, as an assistant.

Some people at NIU, in spite of Jorgensen's success, wanted Luck to be NIU's Will Robinson.

Brigham was the AD. Jorgensen was forced out so Luck could be promoted to HC.

Wow, this is interesting news. Maybe Rob should have become a priest instead of a BB coach. I knew he was super religious, but I never knew it affected his recruiting.

I definitely agree. And to think that he abruptly left because his boat was too big for the Kishwaukee! All be needed to do was pour more water in the river, and he could have had an illustrious career at NIU. But, no, he had to go to WMU because he said that they had a more beautiful brook with lots of curves. Gosh, I hope he was referring to a body of water and not one of the members of the student body! But, of course, his boat grew like his ego, so he left brook for some gopher. Poor brook! Oh well, whatever floats his boat!

I also heard that he told the staff that he didn't want anyone nominated for player of the week as he didn't want anyone to be held above the others on the team.

I used to have season tickets during this period and I noticed that players would usually get pulled out of the game right when they got hot. I remember many players walking back to the bench with a quizzical look on their face.

We've had some seriously dysfunctional coaches.

Pat Culpepper (14-29) was seriously out of place as NIU HFC, perhaps even more so than Charlie Sadler.
