..........just looked over your sked....so who exactly is your signature road win this year? Dayton or JM? Looks like you struggle away from home. Should be a great atmosphere in the Cam on Thurs. We'll make sure your boys leave with an impression stamped on their backsides. Go HERD !!!!

Well, if we do beat Marshall on the road, it still wouldnt be our signature road win.

RE: ODU @ Marshall Thursday, Feb. 22
You know boys?
We can do this for the next 3 days (boring) or go through the starters & the benches. OK, I’ll start: 1’s and2’s
Elmore and Burks. #1 & #2 scorers in the league. Both can heat up from 3land. Both can drive and get to the rim in the most acrobatic ways. Burks is the betterdefender, although Jon has improved and is getting into the lane to grab a lot of boards. Of late CJ is so hard to guard! He averaged 31.5 the last 2 games. You may be able to shut down one but almost nobody is going to shut down both of them.

Penava vs your bigs: IF he can stay out of foul trouble, he is the biggest game changer on the court. He is very athletic. He is avg 4+ blocks per game. Long and pretty quick for a 6’10” guy. Can (and will) bring the ball up the floor. I know you are proud of your bigs, but Adjen is going up against 6’10 250 and 6’11 270 every day in practice, so I don’t think you are going to show him something he hasn’t seen. He also is a very good 3 point shooter, so one of your bigs better come out to defend the line or he will light you up. We basically play 4 guards, so Frosh Jared West is our best defender. Just under 6’ but takes defending the other teams best back court player. Can score and shoots it from 3 when he gets the chance.
Biggest mid-season addition: Rondale Watson, trxfer from Wake. He is very athletic, goes to the basket sharply. Good rebounder. Usually doesn’t start but 1stone off the bench. We won’t press much & like to play man to man on D. Zone tends to give us trouble but ODU doesn’t seem like zone fits their tough-guy persona.
Anybody want to chime in from Monarchland? I really haven’t seen enough of y’all to have an opinion. Tell you this: I’d rather have the last 2 wins be on the road & nail biters where we showed a good bit of moxie vs last 2 wins in the comfort of home blowing out 2 teams that didn’t care to show up.
Oh yeah, we have 2 seniors this year. All the above return, + Bennett & Cook.
GoHerd!

Well, a LOT of super overconfident ODU fans.

You know, the series has been pretty close since Dan took over in 2014. ODU has the edge 4-3, but I think with the game in Huntington, we take this one.

I actually think we finish with wins against ODU and Charlotte at home, then lose our last two on the road, UAB and of course Middle.

Marshall wins this one 92 - 80

Marshall has never won an NCAA basketball tourney game. They have been to the dance 5 times overall with the last time being in 31 years ago. I probably wouldn't hype up my teams history if that was the case.

1)And Sonny Allen came from where. Allen is responsible for both Mike and Dan D'Antoni going to Marshall. That's right he came from Ellis Johnson's staff at Marshall.

2)Mike grad from Marshall but he has never forgot where he came from, he's always been around Marshall and was involved in the Vision Campaign. Truth is Mike should have been hired in 1995 when Billy "The Kid" got the job. And then again Dan should have been hired in 2004 when Ron Jirsa was hired.

3)If you like you can send Lee Moon a EMail at l.moon@unf.edu and thank him for destroying our basketball program. I'm sure he feels real proud of that. He did go on and destroy Wyoming's football program then.

Lets see Marshall basketball:
1 #1 Overall NBA Draft Pick
How many does ODU have

1 Top 50 player to ever play the game (Hal Greer) rated #32
How many does ODU have

Marshall Hall of Fame HC Cam Henderson (1935-55) changed the game as we know it, he invented the Fast Break and Zone Defense, before Cam the offense didn't cross the timeline until the defense of the other team set up on the other side, even though there was no rule saying you couldn't just go right down and score, also the Zone was created when one of the buildings had a leak in the roof and part of the floor was wet and you couldn't set up in man.
What innovations has ODU had on the modern game

Marshall has a National Championship (1947 NAIB now NAIA) Marshall Wins 1947 NAIB
How many does ODU have

Marshall has Mike D'Antoni who in 2003 completely changed the NBA. before 2003 the avg score for most teams was 74 points per game, with an avg of 5 3 point shots per game. D'Antoni came in and turned the basketball world on its head. Thanks to what the NBA likes to call "Mike's 7 seconds or less" last year the NBA avg score was 119 points and an avg of 32 3 pointers per game
What has anyone from ODU done to radically change the game

Just like Joan C Edwards Stadium, its almost as difficult to come away with a win in the Cam Henderson Center. Since it opened in 1981 Marshall has won 77% of the games there, just ask WVU who is 0-5 in the Cam.

Sorry but all of this bragging/boasting goes out the window when the only stat that matters for college hoops is flat out embarrassing for Marshall....Last time Marshall went to the NCAA tournament was 1987, that was over 30 years ago!

To be fair for half that time we've been in 1-2 bid leagues with Memphis and now Middle. Not like others in the conference were going to the dance either. Out of those 13 years it's been Memphis, UAB, Middle, I think Houston went once beside Memphis, and whoever won our first 3.0, maybe ODU. Before that the MAC was one bid, with Kent St being dominant. At least when we were in the SoCon there was parity and lots of teams had a good shot each year. But the fact of the matter is no matter how good a team is in CUSA, if you don't win the tournament, now, you ain't going. There can be only one. And if that one team is dominant over a long period of time you can't even count on going once every 14 years just based on odds.

Look at Western. They're probably the only team that can really brag about NCAA visits in recent times. But they haven't been in several years, now. Not an easy thing to do for 1 bid leagues with a dominant team.

You can tell when the fans agree that the team currently sucks when you have to reference the past. Yeah dude, your past is great...

I am really enjoying these comments that claim MU would have won if they had all their players. You know we've been playing without all of our players all year, right? Man, if we could just have all our players healthy, we would be so undefeated right now!

Sure thing. Ahmad Caver, our point guard, has 41 assists with 2 turnovers over the last 5 games. The offense runs through him and we don't turnover the ball very often.

BJ Stith, our 2/3 guard, decided to drop 36 on UTSA (a game where our players had the flu btw, didn't seem to matter). He only scored 7 against UTEP, which brings me to my next point:

Randy Haynes, our other 2/3 guard, scoring 24 in the UTEP game. We have three starters who can score from the outside this year which means the packed in zone doesn't work so much when they are on. And if one player is off (see BJ Stith above vs UTEP) the others can pick up the slack.

Sorry for the back-to-back posts, was away most of the weekend. Can I just say how happy I am to have a thread this large before a game? And it's only Tuesday. All the smack is meant in fun, and it should be fun. Cheers

FWIW: Sonny Allen was the freshman coach and he left MU after the 1965 basketball season and became the ODU coach for the 1965-1966 season. Danny entered MU in 1966. Mike didn't enter MU until the fall of 1969. I think I am correct about dates, it was time ago.

RE: ODU @ Marshall Thursday, Feb. 22
ODU is evenly balanced. They have a 7 man rotation that has recently moved to 8 with a freshman sharpshooter. Point guard has an elite assist/turnover ratio. Good all around player.

Both wings can score. Stith more of a shooter, But both have been shooting a lot of 3s lately. Porter is an all around stud big man. Can do it all. Stith is a good defender/rebounder.

ODU is more rounded whereas Marshall relies on 3 players.

Points per 100:

Godwin 35 (just started playing more)
Porter 32
Stith 29
Haynes 26
Caver 23
Hueit 22 (doesnt play much)
Stith 19

Burks 31
Elmore 30
Penava 29
Bledsoe 20
Watson 18

We typically dont foul a lot but thats the key. That is how Marshall beat is last year. Might see some more 1-3-1 to keep Marshall out of the lane and force them to shoot from outside.

Our 1 and 2 makes up the best defensive backcourt in CUSA, and that race isn't even close. Oh yea, and one is averaging 15 ppg and one is averaging 13 ppg.

Considering Marshall is 321st in points per game allowed, Penava needs to be blocking way more shots in order for them to be any good on defense.
