RE: @Hofstra
Really intrigued to see how good Justin Wright-Foreman actually is. I'd imagine that Ty Taylor will guard him. Haven't seen Hofstra play at all this year, but it seems like they score mostly off of isolation. Also, looking forward to seeing Cacok and Gustkys go at it. I recall him really giving Cacok problems last year.

CAA Standings

1. NU 7-3 (# 78 RPI)
W&M 7-3 (# 85)
Charleston 7-3 (# 115)
4. Hofstra 6-4 (# 94)
5. Elon 5-5 (# 131)
Towson 5-5 (# 104)
7. Delaware 4-6 (# 235)
UNCW 4-6 (# 278)
9. Drexel 3-7 (# 247)
10. JMU 2-8 (# 302)

Efficiency Rankings (kenpom.com)

UNCW

Adjusted Offense: # 208 (of 351)
Adjusted Defense: # 317
Overall: # 271

Hofstra

Adjusted Offense: # 87
Adjusted Defense: # 264
Overall: # 168

Projected Starters

PG: Desure Buie (Jr.): 4.9 ppg, 2.8 apg, .800 FT %
SG: Justin Wright-Foreman (Jr.): 25.2 ppg, 3.1 apg, .451 FG %
G: Eli Pemberton (So.): 14.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg, .418 3-pt %
PF: Stafford Trueheart (So.): 3.8 ppg, 0.7 bpg, .510 FG %
C: Rokas Gustys (Sr.): 9.9 ppg, 11.5 rpg, .597 FG %

Hofstra has relied heavily on a trio of performers this year, one from each class. Senior Gustys is the CAA's # 2 rebounder. Junior Wright-Foreman leads the league in scoring as well as minutes. And sophomore Pemberton chips in nicely in the scoring department as a nice outside shooter.

But unlike past Hofstra teams, the Pride have some depth to go along with their front-line performers. Senior big man Hunter Sabety is 8th in the league in blocks per game off the bench (0.8), Grad transfer Joel Angus III provides decent scoring and rebounding (5.2 ppg, 3.9 rpg), and freshman guard Jalen Ray is an additional perimeter threat. 10 different players on Hofstra's squad have averaged 10 minutes per game or more.

While it is difficult to keep up with Hofstra's scoring, it's not always necessary to slow the game down to beat them. They're 8th in the league in field goal % defense (.478), and 7th in the league against the 3 ball (.370). And despite the presence of Gustys, Hofstra's rebounding margin (+3.1), while impressive, should probably be even higher than 3rd in the league. Gustys can be worn down over the course of the game, and when he's out, the Pride are inconsistent at cleaning up the glass. Gustys is also not much of a shot blocker, and even though both Sabety and Trueheart are Top 10 in the league in blocks per contest, Hofstra is just middle of the pack in the category as a team.

Hofstra has played a lot of close games this season. Their scoring margin is only a +1.1 in CAA games, with 8 of their 10 games being decided by 7 points or less. There also isn't a surefire score that teams need to hit to feel confident or pessimistic about their chances one way or the other. Hofstra has won 3 of their 6 league games scoring 71 points or less. Meanwhile, Hofstra put up 87 against W&M and 76 against Elon, but lost both of those games.

In short, Hofstra is right where they should be. They're above average, but beatable.

I'm not so sure about that. They're right in the middle of the pack in the league in assists (5th - 12.9 per game). And from what little I've seen of the Pride this season, they do seem to do a decent job with ball movement.

And even though Wright-Foreman is a scoring guard who averages nearly 20 shots per game, he's also 5th in the league in assists. So it seems to me he's the type who scores in the flow of the offense, rather than a guy who is constantly trying to create his own shot. Desure Buie is not much of a scoring threat at all and is always looking to distribute. He's not much of a threat on the drive, especially when you notice he's only attempted 25 free throws all season.

Not sure how well zone would work against these guys, but of course we still need to sprinkle it in when we can, just to get them out of their rhythm in their own building.

I should've looked more into it. Was kind of just assuming that off of a 40 point performance. I do like how C.B. has made in game adjustments on defense lately. I was actually talking to someone today that told me the Heels miss McGrath's defensive game planning this year. Which kind of shocked me... Have to think Jackie Manuel knows a thing or two about defense as well, he was a top notch defender on the '05 team.

The season statistics don't tell the whole story. Angus III (17 starts) lost his starting spot to Trueheart (5 starts). Kenny Wormley (13 starts) lost his starting spot to Buie (9 starts). Angus III averaged 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds in his first 9 games and has averaged 2.5 points and 2.3 rebounds since. Wormley has 30 assists in 11 out of conference games and 4 assists in 11 CAA games. Trueheart averaged 2.7 points and 1.5 rebounds in his first 13 games and 6.2 points and 4.7 rebounds since. In Hofstra's first 4 games, Trueheart played 5 minutes combined with no points and 1 rebound. He went from rarely playing to being a starter. Buie scored 12 in his first game, averaged 2.0 in his next 8 games, and has averaged 6.3 since.

Angus III and Wormley are injured, but I have no idea if they will play. Angus III missed the last 2 games and Wormley got hurt in 3 minutes last game.

Hofstra is having a throwback night and calling themselves "Hofstra College Flying Dutchmen."

So basically it's kind of been a revolving door outside of Wright-Foreman, Pemberton and Gustys?

If we can knock off Hofstra, we'll have beaten 2 teams this year that currently feature one of the nation's top 5 scorers. Wright-Foreman ranks 4th, while Chris Clemons of Campbell ranks 5th (24.4 ppg). That has to be a rare feat, right? lol.

That spread seems really high, especially with our recent stretch of games.

I wonder if we put Bryan on Gustkys. Bryan can bang with anyone and I don't see Cacok being as effective if he has to deal with him on the defensive end.

In the last 12 games, Wright-Foreman has been in Hofstra's top three scorers every time, Pemberton has been in Hofstra's top three scorers every game except for one, and Gustys has been in Hofstra's top three scorers every game except for two. The top three scorers include ties for third. In 10 out of 22 games, all of them scored more than anyone else on Hofstra. Gustys, who has played the third most minutes, has played 44.9% more minutes than Jalen Ray, who has played the fourth most.

Kind of sounds like what we had last year with Ingram, Bryce, Flemmings

Kind of, but not exactly. Last season Cacok was fourth on your team in scoring while averaging over double what Ray who is fourth on Hofstra averages now.

RE: @Hofstra
Not sure why, but Cacok only played 16 minutes and 19 minutes against Hofstra last year.

Anyhow, Wright-Foreman takes a LOT of shots. I mean a lot. He averages taking about 20 shots per game, which is twice as many as anyone else. Not sure how i'd play them. Their PG's aren't that big and don't try to score really. Hopefully that keeps Talley out of foul trouble. But that's where the problems start. Who can cover Foreman? Probably nobody. Their overall stats look a lot like ours, but they rely heavily on Foreman to score.

I think i'd press a bit more, and pick him up full court in an attempt to keep the ball out of his hands as much as possible. Then, if he does get the ball it will be later in the shot clock. I kind of like the idea of Brown using his quickness to hound him and keep the ball out of his hands as a rotates in for Talley and Taylor.

On offense, i'd have Talley drive on them a lot. See if he can draw some fouls on Gustys or kick out to Taylor and Fornes for the 3. Bryan should match up well this game since their big men don't step out side to shoot. This will probably be a battle in the paint, with TO's deciding the game. Hofstra is good at turning it over.

This feels like an opportunity to grab a difficult road win.

Hawks 75
Hofs 71
