We have to support our program in the likes of:

Miami
Boise
TCU
BYU
UCF (cough but true)
Utah

To be the best we have to support our team like the best.

This season’s attendance was a joke. So many excuses. It’s hot, it’s cold, it’s raining, etc

We should have 40,000 fans at every game regardless of weather conditions.

Or we can just be an average football team

Fans in the stands is crucial

Our die hards have to adopt the “Bring a Friend” mentality like Coach West preached for years.

Coach West was right.

This is what 39,000 announced attendance looks like at Miami.

Looks like this game was played in a blizzard.

You can't be expected to draw well when you play crappy opponents. This was during a game against Florida State.

Virginia Tech...one of the bigger draws.

Add that to the season ticket package, and I will not only renew mine, but might buy another half dozen or so.

Maybe we a had a slightly larger crowd but no more than 5%

Where did you sit? It matters on perspective. Tv does not tell the story.

I sat low in the ISU section. It was obvious to me that there were more Memphis fans. I guess 60/40 as well.

The Liberty Bowl attendance really, REALLY frustrated me. It also led me to doubt whether our team would ever be able to attract a 45-50K average.

The attendance for that game was 57K (a sellout). Iowa State accounted for at least 25K of those in attendance. So, Memphis only attracted ~32K for the biggest game in our recent history. The game did sell out, but not until a couple days before the game. The average fan had plenty of time to buy tickets, and potentially take a ticket away from one of the Iowa State fans. If the demand was there, the LB wouldn't have had the opportunity to send more tickets to Iowa State. But, they did.

The weather was certainly a factor, but weather shouldn't play into a fan's decision when it's the biggest game in the last twenty years (probably more).

Dude, this is really a glass half empty post.
Compare the attendance of this bowl game to other 2017 bowl games. Then, put your negativity in check.

I often wonder if our fans have ever been to any other college games. Not just SEC - but any of the other 100+ D1 schools.

RE: Memphis Fans MUST buy Season Tickets AND ATTEND
Can anyone find total HOME attendance numbers year by year for memphis tiger football going back at least into the 1980s?

I've tried and either i'm not using the right search words or there just isn't any attendance info out there.

I actually saw this very thing the other day. I think it went back to the 60s. I can't remember where it was though.

RE: Memphis Fans MUST buy Season Tickets AND ATTEND
I think we've averaged between 35,000-37,000 for all home football games over the last 4 years. Not counting the Liberty Bowl, we had 4 games this year of 40,000+ and only did that 6 times from 2014-16 (2 being Ole Miss and Navy). Announced attendance from 2014-2017:

50,000+ -- 2 games
40,000+ -- 8 games
30,000+ -- 12 games (9 being 34,000+)
< 30,000-- 4 games (Fuente 1st game, Halloween 2014, trop storm 2017, Tulane 2017)

Takes time, but Memphis is getting there.

Tommy west cost us the game at utk when he refused to play DeAngelo
I agree we have got to support this team, if u read my past post, u know I constantly harp on crowd support and call
Out the excuses of to hot, to cold, to early, to late. Gotta stop peeps, we r building a good program, support it and good
Things will happen
We also must up grade the ooc schedule, but please fill the bowl. I heard from the street that because of this trs bowl crowd
The liberty bowl will take a long look at us if we have a decent record. They liked the sell out too

Good stuff, but you are mistaken about some things. Fuente's first game was an incredible crowd, right around 40K. But that was 2012. 2014 opener was v. Austin Peay and heavy threat of rain kept people away.

You're right. I was out of town for both games and mixed them up.

19 of last 26 homes games were 34,000 or better. Far cry from the days of 4100 and 15,000 vs CUSA teams

I believe UTK paid Tommy off to not play our best player.

Notice: This is a wildly reckless and absurd rumor I am starting, made up out of whole cloth.

Those media guide covers are awesome, Tiger87. Thanks for those. Sad seeing those Dockery covers and thinking what could have been.

Yes, the attendance numbers are in the media guide archives. I haven't had time to see how far they go back, but the media guides go back to 1953.

Thanks for the tip.

Just go to this year's media guide and go to the Liberty Bowl Stadium section. It typically shows average attendance for the full history of the stadium.
