Crap. I clicked on this thread all ready to make fun of some stupid costume. I didn't realize it was a damn cute real live dog.

And some fans have suggested UAB get a Komodo Dragon. I'm glad they didn't. That monster creeps the hell out of me. Ever since one at the zoo was at the glass sizing up my three year old as a meal.

There are some live Owls on the Rice campus living in some of the trees. You see them every now and then walking around the campus.

I miss the old SWC days when you would see live mascots at the football games (the UT Longhorn was probably the most fun to see, followed by Baylor's baby bear. The Aggie collie was my least favorite).

I wish we had a real lion

I mean, if Louisa County High School can have lions at its football games ...

It would be cool if your eagle was trained to fly around the stadium before games like the bald eagle that does it during the national anthem.
Some sumbitch would think its a dove and take a shot at it

03-lmfao
No lie, years ago there were alot of doves that would fly thru the stadium during games. It was common to hear "THEY COMIN IN" or 'LEAD HIM ABOUT 10 FEET"

04-rock

That's great.

Here's a link to Robert Flatt's photo book on Rice's resident Great Horned Owls: https://www.amazon.com/Rices-Owls-Robert...0615537731

... and a video about them:

Rice has had some live Owl mascots in the 1960s (and a few other times, IIRC) ... but they were difficult for students to keep alive and healthy.

As for others' live mascots, I enjoyed the Texas Tech Red Raider who road the sidelines atop a black stallion ... as well as the caged Arkansas Razorback and (now-SWC) LSU's Bengal Tiger.

You can sometimes see a Roadrunner or two on the UTSA campus also.

Btw, contrary to popular belief, owls actually fall on the lower spectrum of intelligence when it comes to birds, so it's interesting that they've always been depicted as being so intelligent in popular books, cartoons, and movies.

The association goes way back in history. Since at least 500 B.C., the "little owl" common around Athens has been associated with Athena, the Greek mythological goddess of wisdom (and her Roman equivalent, Minerva).

Here's a picture of a Greek coin (an Athenian drachma) dating back to 480-420 B.C.:

[Image: 375px-Tetradrachm_Athens_480-420BC_MBA_Lyon.jpg]

(From the linked Wikipedia page: The inscription "ΑΘΕ" is an abbreviation of ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩΝ, which may be translated as "of the Athenians". In daily use the Athenian drachmas were called glaukes (γλαῦκες, owls).

And, of course, Earl Wise, Sr., used an owl on his potato chip brand. :-)

Can I ask what happened to the eagle?

Phi Tau’s got blamed for shooting it with pellets, which they did, but it was starved out. Poor student handling.

By that logic of keeping at the zoo, we still don’t have a real mascot. That’s like saying Alabama has a live mascot but you have to go to the zoo to see it.

Your information about the Phi Taus is absolutely false. I lived there at the time (92-96). The only reason we got that Nugget from Auburn originally was because it had been shot & rehabbed at their vet school. They left pellets in him and it was not fit to be released back in the wild. Nugget developed lead poisoning and compounded with the fact that he was neglected by the student responsible for feeding him, he died of starvation.

Now, with that said; we DID sometimes shoot guns off the balcony of the Phi Tau house, but not pellet guns and not at the Eagle cage. Believe me, the ordinance we had came from guys that trained in the Guard & also worked at Camp Shelby...it was way more than pellet guns.

Unfortunately, the student that was responsible for feeding him was a POS that was a MS State homer. He was in fact a Phi Tau, His name was P****** O'*****y. Stayed drunk all the time, failed out of school after barely getting initiated, packed up his trunk with the MS State stickers all over it and didn't tell anyone he was leaving town & never coming back. The turkey necks for Nugget were still in the fridge and no one knew until it was too late.

We will never have a live mascot on campus again because of that guy. A MS State fan.

That's what happened

i was out at the cage with my son a few months before that happened. Met the guy, ive never heard that much detail about the story but I would say its a safe bet he wears a visor to hide his circumcision scar
