Tyman took UC to the Final Four of the NIT in his senior year (and back then, that was almost as impressive as the NCAA tourney - the team they lost to, Duquesne, ended up #6 in the final AP poll). Twyman also had a Hall-of-Fame NBA career for the Cincinnati Royals and was a model citizen.

If the fact that a 6'5" forward averaged 16 rebounds per didn't tip you off that the game was a lot different from the one Kilpatrick played . . .

Twyman was a great man and a great player and the first stud at UC, so his jersey unquestionably should be retired, but his career doesn't live up to the extremely high standards UC has set up for everyone since him.

Never got to see Twyaman play, but I think it's pretty obvious he was legend. NBA HOF.

I'm OK with the three right now, as I think most everyone agrees there is no debate about those 3. There is a debate about everyone else.

It should be a super-elite honor to have your jersey retired.

Great programs are defined by their high standards, not by the number of jerseys hanging on the wall.

Oscar, Martin, and Twyman are clearly a step above Kilpatrick, Van Exel, Logan, Fortson, etc.

If you don't think Twyman was way better than SK, remember that both his junior year (averaged 21.8 points and 16.5 rebounds) and his senior year (24.6 points and 16.5 rebounds) were better than any of Kilpatrick's seasons (20.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists his senior year). Apparently Moe Egger is discussing this issue on his show today (per his twitter).

I guess Mo reads this board. I think he is basically saying that maybe they don't need their jersey retired, but let's honor these guys on some other way. I liked the HOF idea.

Seconded (thirded? fourthed? twelfthed?) on the Hall of Fame idea. NKU has a small HOF in the concourse of BB&T. It's a nice touch IMO. I'm sure we could fill a much larger room with much more impressive players.

Statue. That should only be reserved for truly epic players (Big O status).

But Mr. Robertson did not even win a national championship! We can't just go around building statues to any old best player to ever play college basketball. At the University of Cincinnati, we have higher standards. Here, to have a statue, you must be the best player of all time AND have won at least one title. No, I take that back, two titles, minimum. One title, we will make a tasteful oil painting of you and display it in the athletic director's office. A full body statue is reserved for the greatest player ever who has also won at least two national championships. We don't want to debase the honor, do we?

RE: The retired jersey debate
When we played IL in FB a few years ago I was struck by the fact that only 2 players were honored on the stadium.

The two were Dick Butkus and Red Grange (The Galloping Ghost).

I know you say that's because their football sucks, but IL has won 5 Nat Championships, 15 B10's and is #8 in HOF.

I suggest commissioning some young CCM artist to come up to Chataeu de Rath in the UP and building that statue at the entrance.

Let's get some crowdfunding started on that.

I would want it done in the style of Salvador Dali. Make that happen.

It is quite possibly the most textbook punch thrown in team sports history. The guy must have spent time in a ring as a pugilist specialist as a teenager.
