+1

Hard to comprehend someone would even suggest NIU going independent in FB. Just unbelievable.

Only sport where NIU would have to find a home for would be wrestling.

With NM ST and soon Liberty joining the Indepedent ranks and needing to fill out their schedules, a round robin schedule with as many Indepedents as possible wouuld take the place of a traditional 8 game conference schedule
Playing 4-5 P5 programs a year should also help draw in better recruits and pay alot of bills as those road games often net G5 teams nearly a $1M. Indiana, Minnesota, Kansas and Nebraska are teams that NIU should compete with if not beat.
This is the only way to get back to Saturday mostly football

And the winner for most misguided post!
Playing 4-5 P5 programs a year is so unrealistic it defies description. Who you think NIU "should compete with" and who would be willing to schedule us are two different animals.
Scheduling 4-5 P5 programs a year does not guarantee better recruits. IF -- and this is an improbable IF -- we had 4-5 road games for money, who are we scheduling for home opponents?
In essence, you think "a round robin schedule" with teams like New Mexico State and Liberty is more desirable than the history built up against Toledo, WMU, CMU, etc. In your thinking, those travel costs don't matter, yet you note Columbia, MO, is closer than some MAC schools.
Do you know anything about NIU's past athletic history? Do you realize what a mistake it was when NIU went independent, how detrimental it was to everything beyond football? Being a football-only affiliate -- Big West -- was no better.
How about NIU and other conference members take a more aggressive role in having the commissioner renegotiate or make it clear such future scheduling will cease.

Recruits at G5 level don't care about your opponents. They probably prefer to win. Big P5 opponents doesn't really help draw attendance either. I like the big ten opponents, even at soldier field. Nice environment and exposure.

When was the last time you’ve seen any of these teams play Tuesday, Wednesday or even Thursday?

Or NIU could sit on its hands and do nothing while playing 3 weekend home games year and watch it's attendance drop below 10K per game. The MAC contract has several more years left on it and by the time its done (if not renewed under the same or similar terms) there won't be much of a fanbase besides students attending the university at that time and those within a short drive of DeKalb

What? You think they don't care about that? What planet do you live on. There is no doubt that Carey and the whole staff went to recruits last year and said you are going to get to play some of the best teams/stadiums in the nation at Iowa and FSU next year. Recruits look at all of that stuff.

As for the attendance, if you had most of the Big Ten schools come and play here for football (not purdue, indiana, rutgers, maryland or minn) I'd bet it is a sell out. Casual fans that we try to grab care about bigger schools and unfortunately not ours.

A similar plan is working for Army UMASS & BYU and NMST and Liberty are also embarking upon that course of action. Saturday games with NM ST, Liberty & UMASS is better than playing EMU, Akron, BGSU, BSU or Buffalo when at least half the home games are on nights when few can attend.

NIU's home attendance is tanking and more of the same will only reduce it further. The Horizon league sponsors most sports that NIU offers save Men's Wrestling and would likely entertain a relationship with NIU given the Horizon's recent loss of Valpo & Loyola. NIU's hoops and olympic sports programs would benefit from being affiliated with a league that has an even tighter geographic footprint than the MAC and whose members are all either in or very close to major markets where if flying the teams were necessary could be done at a lower cost than in the MAC

There are 4 Horizon league programs within 200 miles of NIU

Green Bay
Milwaukee,
UIC
IUPUI

WMU the only MAC program

2 additional that are within 300 miles
Detroit U
Oakland

Add EMU Toledo & BSU for the MAC

Only the Ohio based programs and NO KY are more than 300miles, NKU is a stones throw from Cincy, Wright St in Dayton(large airport) Cleveland St(large Airport) and Youngstown St(AIrport nearby)

Last season NIU's(6) average attendance was surpassed by ILSU(5) 11,440 to 11,291 and Division 2 attendance leader for teams that played at least 5 home games: Grand Valley State 13,432 (5). When faced with unpleasant results, only a fool continues to keep the same course and not contemplate change.

Please quit posting this nonsense in thread after thread. The last round of conference expansion talk included BYU, so quit assuming that place wants to stay Independent. As to Army, New Mexico State, and Liberty, they are no more desirable than MAC foes and will not bring fans to DeKalb.

Do you understand that we were once members of the Horizon League (formerly Midwestern City Conference) and left because NIU administration desired affiliation with just one conference and believed the MAC to be better. Philosophically, why should the Horizon League want to replace two like-minded programs with what would then be only a second school with football?

Technically, the MAC is a better fit academically and athletically --- IF the current commissioner would be replaced.

And when it comes to that mileage crap you noted and mention the ones with airports, you do realize beyond basketball, Huskie team budgets preclude air travel. Citing NIU's average attendance being surpasses by ISU and GVSU is comparing apples, oranges and grapes. Those schools weren't saddled with midweek games, the opponents, the skill level of the athletes, etc., are not on the same level.
