I'm not so sure about calling it one of the best rivalries in sports though. We'll have to let that play out first. We haven't played them in a long time, there's no nature hatred there with the exception with people on internet message boards (a very small portion of either fan base).

It's a rivarly in the same way our games against SMU or UConn were. Always heated due to the stakes, but never a passion/hatred for the rivalry/opponent themselves.

You hang out on the AAC board and you don't hate Wichita State yet?

cold blooded and stickboy are incredibly irritating, believe both hang out in their moms basement.......04-cheers

Rivals. We have not played them since the MOVal Conference Day. We had to beat them in a playoff game at Evansville to win the conference and get into the NCAA to win our 2nd NCAA.

Did not get back to Cincy until about 3 AM. Was my 2nd year and it was hard to get to my 8 am Organic Chem Lecture at 8 am.

Quote:UC's move into the BIG EAST means that UC and Pitt, who despite being separated by 250 miles have faced each other only four times, will play on a regular basis. Seeking to build this into a rivalry, the athletic directors of the two schools, Bob Goin at Cincinnati and Jeff Long at Pittsburgh, agreed to initiate the River City Rivalry and create an appropriate trophy for the game.

http://gobearcats.com/news/2005/10/5/Bea..._Game.aspx

That had potential as well... But it never really attained "rivalry" status. Helluva game, but not a true rivalry.

It was a made up rivalry with an ugly a$$ trophy.

I'll wait until they actually start playing before declaring it a rivalry. But it certainly has potential.

Thought that was Bradley...but in any event, UC-Wichita was a bitter rivalry back in the 60’s.

Rivalries are made not born. Would I like to see us build a rivalry with WSU - yes. That's a good thing for our league and also for television interest. Just think how we'd look as a conference this year without the WSU add. UConn and Memphis are down and SMU not looking the same. Obviously, nothing will top our hated rival Ex. Nothing will likely ever top Louisville either - remember some of those Huggs - Crum battles? All I know is we have a newcomer in WSU that is damn good. Let's play 'em a few years and see where it goes. Anything to generate some national interest is fine by me.

Edit - WSU fans pack their arena and travel well. That is also a good thing when you see how many fans show up at Houston games for example.

Memphis State was a fun rivalry in the 80's, when Dana Kirk (R.I.P.) was the coach. The student section was right behind the opposing team's bench in those days, and Dana Kirk and his team would spend the game yelling back and forth with us students as we insulted them during the game. Memphis State had some really great teams back in those days. Too bad we did not.

Had a similar experience with USF in the late 80s. This is when we played at Xaviers old home. Our cheering section got under the skin of South Florida so badly that after the game they came under the basket where we were seated and cussed us and grabbed their crotch. Unfortunately, we had lost as usual.

RE: Andy Katz: Cincinnati/Wichita State
I agree with those who suggest rivalries are organic and take time to develop. Unfortunately, they can now disappear overnight, as UC's best one (Louisville) did.

Flipping over to WSU v. Tulsa after the end of the UC game last night, I was so impressed seeing Tulsa's arena full of passionate fans. Of course the WSU contingent traveled there in big numbers to fill empty seats. But both fanbases were into what turned out to be a very exciting finish. After games with mostly empty arenas against Temple and USF, I guess that's just another frustration with AAC basketball.

Most nights in the old Big East we could count on passionate fans and the best of them would travel to our campus when UC hosted Louisville, West Virginia and Syracuse. So I welcome WSU fans to the conference and expect the best games of the AAC season when UC tangles with the Shockers.

Yulp. I think we can sum it up by saying we'll take what we can get at this point. Reading the conference board thread for the game last night, apparently WSU and Tulsa go back a ways too.

WSU will be a rivalry of convenience until we move. Cincinnati has nothing in common and very few links with Wichita, Kansas.

MVL: Missouri Valley League in the late 50's and 60's. Cincy, Louisville, Drake, Bradley, Wichita St., No. Texas St., Tulsa, St. Louis and later Memphis. Super basketball league back then. You had to win your conference to get into the NCAAT. Forget the year, but UC had to win a playoff game in one the national champ years just to get into the NCAAT

It also helps that Wichita is only 175 miles from Wichita... And actually, I'm surprised it's that far. When I was a Chaplain resident at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, we routinely had patients come in from Tulsa and surrounding areas. The two cities really have a feeling of being neighbors.

Reading the threads on the main (Conference) board, it sounds like this was Tulsa's first sell-out of the season and that it was a large WSU contingent that sold it out.

I can’t name anyone on their team other than their coach. The one guy is really good but his name slips my mind. Usually when it’s a rivalry for me I can name the key players that give me heartburn. Check back with me before the conference tournament.

I can remember Shamet and picture the other guard off the bench that looks about 40 years old and shoots treys.

Maybe one will start blowing kisses to the crowd and get this thing riled up.

Dude, you had to bring it up. His scrappy play reminded me of that Temple punk Pepe Sanchez too.
