What about a 9 team playoff?
#6 conference champions of the P6 (yes, the AAC is worthy of an AQ)
#1 spot for highest rated conference champion of the G4 (MWC will get it most years)
And a play in game for the top two rated non-conference champion schools (Alabama this year). The play-in game is required to earn your way into the playoff for not winning your conference. The play-in game should be played at the highest rated of the two's home stadium. Plus the extra home game earns cash for the school which no one will complain about.

Anyway, just a thought.

Too many games. Eight is the number. The first round is the week after championship Saturday at the higher ranked home stadium of each pairing. That extra round basically just snaps onto the existing playoff. That the easiest way to do it. Make it so the 4 losers in the first round are still bowl eligible. That way no bowls are killed. To me, any expansion has to have as few losing stakeholders as possible in order to avoid objections.

This and this is all that needs to happen. P5 champs, G5 Champ, and 2 at large.

But it’s not P5. It’s P6.

What about a 7 team playoff?

The 1,2, and 4 seeds get byes. And the other 4 teams play a double-round robin series to determine the 3 seed.

The 3 seed automatically wins the coin flip.
