2 RBs who each had at least 850 yds and 9 TDs
Tony Pollard (1600+ all purpose yards, 10 TDs)
a few playmakers in pass game (Magnifico, Dykes, Coxie, Pop)
17/22 on 2 deep defense (+ Gentry and Jackson Dillon back from injury)
Mainly, it will come down to who is our QB and how well he performs. David Moore? Brady Davis? A transfer who isn't even on campus yet?
Home games - Mercer, GA State, South Alabama, UCF, UConn, Houston, Tulsa (6-1?? probably 5-2 at worst)
Road- Mizzou, Navy, SMU, Tulane, ECU (3-2?? 1-4 at worst??)
could see us anywhere from 6-6 to 9-3, maybe win 10 if we get better than expected QB play.
Just like USF, you're probably going to find that replacing an NFL caliber Senior QB is extremely difficult.
Your RBs had huge chunk plays because defenses had to respect the pass on every down. Defenses couldn't stack the box because getting beat on the pass was going to be the end result. Riley was an extremely accurate passer.
With a new QB who maybe isn't as accurate, makes the wrong reads for a while, or turns the ball over....that'll result in defenses being able to key in on the run better.
folks said that last time and we replaced Lynch with Ferguson.
It'll all depend on who is our QB. If it's sophomore David Moore, expect Memphis to run a lot more QB draws and screen passes as he's a dual threat option.

but memphis is replacing traditional qb, and has done it before...memphis can really be plug and play if the qb is good enough...
most of fergs big plays were by design of the offense... the difference with usf is the big plays were by design of flowers and his feet
similar to houston, ward was so explosive with his feet. we add a 5star pro-style qb and you immediately notice flaws that wards feet were hiding...a rude awakening i think will be there for usf as there offense struggled plenty last year till flowers put on the jets
memphis on the other hand ha a qb they have been grooming for 2 years..will there be a drop off? sure, but not by much.. i see them as a 8+ win team
Why will you be better/worse next season? (Football)
Much of it depends on how our qbs do and if Gilbert uses our receiving corps effectively. When Gilbert ran his full offense the size mismatches drove everyone crazy. I actually think in some ways we are better without MVS because he did not fight for the ball consistently.
Cronkite will replace dj and Tice effectively.
I see us as a 6-8 win team next year unless Brett kean or Chris oladukon just turn out to be real answers at qb.
The defense loses 3 starters at DL but we have two guys who played snaps thus year and four more who should be ready to go this year.
RE: Why will you be better/worse next season? (Football)
I don't think we'll be worse but I don't think we'll be better. I figured another 3, possibly 4 win season. Mo doesn't know his ass from third base but the best thing he has going for him is a DC that knows what he's doing and one of the best QB's in the country coming in.
I am sure Mo and Petersen will find a way to screw it up though.

Grothe is my #2 USF QB of all time (over Marquell Blackwell and BJ Daniels), however Flowers is generally regarded as the best overall player in USF history. Some disagree, but not too many. Flowers superior athletic ability may have hid a flaw or 2 at times. He was just the best athlete on the field.
I would go with Flowers, but would not mind if someone else chose Grothe. I will never forget his game winning drive at Auburn or wins over West Virginia.

Tulane brings back a starting QB for consecutive years for the first time in about 5 years. That's a huge relief. Offense in general should be better, bringing back just about everyone. Big loss will be our two head monster RB tandem of Badie and Hilliard. We've been grooming incoming Texas Tech transfer and 4 star prospect Corey Dauphine. Line was mediocre to poor this year so there's really no where to go but up.
Defense was a bit of a let down this year. We lose a couple of seniors, Parry Nickerson being the big name. We should be ok, with plenty of juniors/sophomores coming back. Would be nice to see the D get back to 2015/2016 levels. We've got some highly rated D-line recruits coming in, obviously they won't be able to help a ton but getting on the field would be excellent.
Special Teams didn't progress as much as many would've liked. Kicking cost us the Cincy game. Signed a highly rated punter, glaring problem this year.
2018 Schedule:
- Wake Forest
- Nicholls State
- @UAB
- @ Ohio State
- ECU
- Memphis
- Navy
- SMU
- @Cincy
- @Houston
- @USF
- @Tulsa
We went 5-7* this year (Banks was in). Inexcusable to not go bowling next year. I like us for 7/8 wins. Being that we're Tulane, probably end up with a heartbreaking 5 again.

I am just glad we get you in Houston next year. Fritz is a hell of coach.

As a Cincinnati fan, I always loved playing Grothe and hated playing Flowers...I think that's all the evidence you need.

To reiterate, with Frank Nutile as QB the Owls were much better. The season starting QB has transferred. We lose one starter from the OL, two stud WRs, but return our 3 best RBs. We also have a good crop of young WRs. On D we lose a starting safety and a couple of DLs. I don’t think we lose much either way, and our young LBs really improved as the year went on. Like many fans I’m bullish on my team. Way early synopsis:
7+ point dog: UCF, USF
Between 7 point dog and 7 point favorite: Maryland, Boston College, Houston, Navy, UConn, Cincinnati
7+ point favorite: Villanova, Buffalo, ECU, Tulsa

Could be, but that's exactly what people said 2 years ago when Paxton Lynch, a first round pick, left, too.
And Norvell has specifically designed an offense intended to operate efficiently with an average QB who can distribute by a number of means within his abilities, to our skill players.
He came to this by having lost a handful of QBs to injury during one of his years as OC at Arizona State.
Because Ferguson replaced Lynch, that theory hasn't been put to the test yet, so we'll have to see, but I wouldn't count on us completely becoming incompetent on offense just yet, lol.
Especially since Norvell calls our plays, and he is still here.
