"Arrived"? You are still right where you always were. One of the NOT Power 5. There are only 2 groups recognized by ESPN, the Press and the public at large. P5 and G5. Regardless of what you call yourself.

Isn't it interesting that CUSA fans are doing quite literally any mental gymnastics possible to discredit the AAC, in a failed effort to convince everyone that the AAC is not in fact heads and shoulders above every G4 conference by a mile?

What's really more interesting is that the SunBelt is better than CUSA. Who saw that coming.

I did. I saw a great many things in my 60 days and 60 nights fasting in the mountains.

Go in peace, my son.

USF has been ranked in the top 25 in 20 straight polls, AP or coaches.

Has anyone in this conference ever done that before?

We can at least agree Troy would dominate the ACC.

We've been in the AP poll about 100 more times than USF has, so possibly.

Almost true, but not quite.

USF has only been playing 21 years and has been in 43 AP polls.

Navy has been in 133 polls in almost the last 100 years.

http://collegepollarchive.com/football/ap/app_total.cfm

USF is actually 5th in the AAC in total weeks ranked in AP poll, despite playing way less than everyone else.

Total weeks ranked in top 25:

Houston 193
SMU 161
Navy 133
Tulane 59
USF 43
Tulsa 42
Cincinnati 41
ECU 34
UCF 21
Temple 16
Memphis 14
UConn 6

As far as being ranked in 20 straight polls, maybe SMU did it in the 80s with the pony express, just guessing.

FYI Rutgers, who has been playing over 100+ years has only been ranked 38 times in their history.

Our 1926 natty was in the Houlgate System, 10 years before the AP polls.
We had a kind of good run from Bellino's Heisman year to Staubach's though...

...and yet, looking quickly at media guide / game notes, our appearance in the AP in October this year was listed as the first time Navy had appeared in the polls in three consecutive years since '58-'60, so maybe not.

Good numbers but remember for some years there was only top ten or top 20, for some years there were no polls.

Bellino. As a Navy second fan, there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. 04-cheers

Exactly. A similar situation exists for going to bowl games, too. Back in the day, for decades, only conference champs could go to bowls (vs. all 6-6 teams now), and if you were independent (as Memphis was for most of 4 decades), you couldn't go at all.

When was that? ECU was independent from 77 to 96 and went to four bowls during that time.

Great point. Navy bowling as an independent:
'23 Rose, '54 Sugar, '57 Cotton, '60 Orange, '63 Cotton, '78 Holiday, '80 Garden State, '81 Liberty, '96 Aloha, and then of course in the current environment, '03-'10 and '12-'14

He misspoke. What he meant was, you couldn't go to a bowl unless you were a brand name, or undefeated. Even THEN, you weren't guaranteed. Like we went 9-0-1 in '63, final ranking of 14th (which should have been a 6th or 7th place according to some national dude's retrospective article about that football season I read), and we didn't go to a bowl that year. As a matter of fact, we didn't go to a bowl until we had a losing season 8 years later, but were the MVC champs.

Point being:

9-0-1 independent = no bowl
4-6 conference member/conference champion = Pasadena bowl.

Earlier. You ain't old enough, lol. I started attending Memphis football games in 1952.

And I shouldn't have said "at all." More like "very rarely," depending on the situation. As time went on, it got easier.

When I have more time, I'll try to do some short research and get some examples. Plus, way back when, there weren't anything like 38 bowl games available, either.

Massey Composite Rating now includes 80 rankings. Last year's final composite included 117 rankings.

As of now AAC is #6, closer to #5 than to #7-10. AAC is closer to #1 than to #9-10.
A year ago AAC was #6, closer to #5 than to #8-10, with the gap to #7 being 60% of the gap to #5.
Two years ago AAC was #6, closer to #5 than to #7-10.
After the '14 season AAC was actually #8, but was closer to #6 than any G4 has been to a #6 AAC since then.
After the '13 season AAC was #6.

Having trouble understanding that one. Who was 6th and who was 7th that year?
