QB Competition
So as of right now the following QBs are on the roster:
Isaac Steibeling R-SO
Mike Glass III R-JR
Preston Hutchinson R-FR
Anton Skupin R-JR
Aaron Jackson FR
Tyler Wiegers R-SR
Jairus Grissom FR(?)

I can't remember a year where the QB spot was THIS up for grabs and honestly I'm pretty excited to see how it plays out. What do y'all think?

It's great. Hopefully able to find a good starter and backup with 7 to choose from! Not sure how they keep a non-scholly kid like Skupin on the roster, when they need to get the most out of each rep for all of these guys.

Wiegers really interesting. Not a dual threat, and unless he's head & shoulders above Stiebeling/Hutchinson/Jackson/Grissom, I'm not sure you want to stall the development of the other guys with a 1 & done?

A big issue last year was trying to run an RPO offense, with a PO only QB.

Should be figured out pretty quickly once they all get on the field in full pads against live competition.

What I think will happen is similar to what happened at CMU, namely, the grad transfer comes in for a year while the real battle is delayed a year.

What we need to figure is who will redshirt and what will those who have already redshirted do.

This will be pretty tough competition in spring (but no Grissom) and I would not be surprised to see one or two transfer.

I would assume Jackson is a good candidate to redshirt or change positions.

I can see Glass as the back up QB. A few others might get caught in the numbers game.

I can see this as not being good news for some who thought they could be the starter in 2018. I can see this as good news for the team which seems to be set for most every position EXCEPT QB.

E'Tough:

According to this article, Tyler appears to have the ability to have been a good B1G QB. It seems like Iowa had a real horse race, photo finish: 1a (Stanley) and 1b (Wiegers).

With that, I really think the job is his to lose. The rest will be looking ahead to 2019 and they have to see the pecking order of the QBs not named Tyler.

RE: QB Competition
I have to imagine this list will be trimmed to 5 or 6 before the season starts. Perhaps a player or two switches positions, but I just don't see us carrying 7 QBs.

Since Grissom was in school for the winter semester, I'm pretty sure that automatically makes him a sophomore (or redshirt freshman) when he gets on scholarship.

My guess is Wiegers is the favorite in the clubhouse for the job, which means another year of development for the other guys. His addition could be read a couple of ways, namely 1) Creighton doesn't think the other QBs are ready to play yet, or 2) an insurance policy in case one of the young guys falters with an experienced offense around him/them. Or, honestly, just more competition from a local kid who wants a better chance at a starting job.

Plenty of talent there! I'm excited to see who wins the spot.

I agree. All of the cards (except Grissom) will be on the table in spring ball.

The problem with Grissom not being able to do spring ball is that it makes him a wild card for the others to evaluate themselves against, WITHOUT seeing him in spring ball.

Maybe Grissom has the ability to be Wiegers' backup yet we won't know until August and that is late if others decide they want to transfer for more playing opportunity.

What is bad for say Aaron Jackson is that he was to start school early so that he could be in the mix during spring ball.

If Wiegers is the de facto favorite there wasn't the pressing need for Jackson to start school early.

Based on my experience, I was ready to start college by second semester of my Senior year. If he already had the credits to graduate then this is a no brainer, regardless of the Wiegers. This is only going to help prepare him, for whatever role he has.

Agree, especially if he got a 2017 scholarship (for 2nd semester at EMU).

If he had to pay his own way for this semester, I might think twice.

RE: QB Competition
I don't know, I'm all for competition, this just seems to be a bit of a square peg in a round hole. Wiegers is very much your pro-style/Iowa football (run 1st)/ pocket passer. Was looking forward to our offense and Keen evolving from the Roback days to a more forward thinking, dual-threat, multi-set, TE/HB incorporated, philosophy. Now we're going to try and build an Iowa/Michigan style offense around a 1 year transfer? I sure hope that's not the plan, because we're not magically going to get the production of the Iowa rushing offense.

Let's assume that Wiegers and the starting Iowa QB were very similar, and neck-and-neck to win the job.

https://www.landof10.com/iowa/iowa-quart...an-stanley

Stanley's stats on the year over 13 games were 196/351 (55.8%), 2432 yds, 26 TD's & 6 Int's. 49 rushes for -115 yds. Per game averages 15/27, 187 yds, 2 TD's, .5 Int's.

55.8% is OK, not great. 26/6 is really good! But if we were to only get 187 yards out of our pass offense/QB, do we really think we can become a 250+ yards per game running team? Seems like a huge stretch to me.

Again, if his arm talent, smarts, and maturity is head and shoulders above everyone else, I guess you borrow him for a year and build the offense to his strengths.

If he's not, let's evolve the offense and develop one of our young guys.

Competition brings out the best in all of us and makes everyone better including the team. I'm sure each candidate is confident they will be the starting QB. May the best player win the job!

Just because the guy is a Big Ten player hardly qualifies him as a stud in the MAC, witnessed by Samuelson. Unfortunately thanks to all of our close games this year, no QB had a chance to play and no one truly knows what we have. A local guy who wants to be here in 2018, what's to lose?

RE: QB Competition
Dear Friends,
I am not as excited as some of you with this turn of events. Eastern hasn't had many grad transfers, but two that come to mind, the quarterback/receiver from Pennsylvania State via Louisiana State, and Dan Samuelson from U-M. Neither did anything to improve the position they played, and therefore the team overall. Grad transfers just don't do anything for me. It's like why didn't they choose Eastern in the first place, or transfer when it was obvious they weren't going to play for the team they chose. What is Coach Creighton looking for in a quarterback? Is it the dual-threat everyone has been talking about, or the drop back pro style. I hope he knows what he is doing.

With 7 QBs on the roster, I have a feeling we'll see some transfers leaving... Not necessarily a bad thing.

May the best QB win. Nice to see a MI kid on the roster but it won't be handed to him. Personally I'm looking forward to a QB that can run the ball.

I think EMU just found their Shane Morris! Following Iowa football, I can tell you Tyler Wiegers is a great kid with a high football IQ. After 4 years of boneheaded quarterbacking, I am psyched!

Actually there are now 4 MI QBs on the roster, Grissom, Jackson, Skupin, and Wiegers.

I liked Roback even though he did make more mistakes that I'd wish.

That said, Wiegers does seem to have a high ceiling and that is all we can ask of him (he can't do anything about only has one year of elig.)

I do believe the team is built to win in 2018, so I'm psyched and ready for a successful season.
