I'm sure the coaches told him he'll have an opportunity to compete, but nothing will be given without earning. Remember, Rob Bolden was 3rd string after Bell and Roback after his transfer. Matt Bohnet worked out pretty well for us when he came from Iowa and became our starter. For all we know someone we arent even talking about will earn the job (Hutchinson?) Wiegers is his own person though and not Shane Morris or Rob Bolden. May the best man win the starting job. This position battle should be fun to keep an eye on over the next 8 months.

Hutchinson could be the sleeper in this group.

Where will Wilton Speight end up? Does anyone think there was interest on either side with EMU?

Only video I can find so far, throws 2 picks. I don’t think anyone has enough information on any of our QBs to name an honest front runner. We are all going with secondary reports and high school rankings /statistics. Spring game will be worth showing up to.

I agree with you Frank and Dan a real world view not handing the position over to someone based on paper performances

No one is handing Wiegers the job.

If I could go total geek on your guys I'd give MY SUBJECTIVE odds on each candidate (which I won't do publicly).

Wiegers has to be the big favorite to win the job. Everything I've read out of Iowa suggests he is a Big Ten-caliber quarterback.

If Grissom, a freshman, beats out a BIG-caliber QB, hey that is great. Love to have him for four years at the helm.

That said, I would not compare a MAC frosh QB to a 3 year QB at Iowa.

I am NOT downplaying any other recruit. I think there are QBs on our roster who can play at the MAC level.

What I'm suggesting is that Wiegers has a chance to be a top tier MAC QB. I believe Grissom, in due time, can also be a top tier MAC QB.

I look forward to watching both play at EMU.

As some have suggested the top QBs (plural) at many B1G schools can end up on NFL rosters. Being a backup QB at OSU, MI, Clemson, Alabama, Fl State, etc. is no sin. Many are an injury away from being a starter at the highest levels.

BTW, I DO trust things like those B1G school 'rag sheets.' Most of them are written by people who REALLY know what they are talking about. If they say Wiegers was neck and neck with Stanley, that's good by me.

RE: QB Competition
The other "wild card" in all of this is Keen as OC and QB coach. I thought Keen was an excellent ST/TE coach. Many of you and me were not totally happy with the offensive play calling early this past season. It seemed to improve after the CMU game when EMU returned to a more balanced offense ie running game and the offensive line showed improvement run blocking (not sure the reason for this). So does Keen "grow" into the FBS OC/QB coach after one year at the helm? All of these young QBs will need development regardless of whether they win the job or sit back a year. Can Keen develop a MAC winning caliber QB? I thought Roback was pretty well developed by the time Keen got him (riddle me this how many OC/QB coaches did Roback have at this career here at EMU?).

Stan Parrish, Kalen Deboer, Aaron Keen.

I fully expect Keen will be back in the same role. Hopefully the scheme and playcalling improve, i was not impressed.

I guess I'm due? I feel pretty confident about this no-brainer prediction. As for Reggie Bell, he was a special talent who, unfortunately was pretty frail, physically. What an electric performer when he was healthy. He was way too good for Ferris State, but I'm happy he had a chance to dominate and have fun at that level. Good for him.

Reggie was a D1 runner and a D2 passer making him a one dimensional QB. A D2 passer would never work in a D1 QB position which is why EMU went a different direction.

Reggie chose a new direction. He was the starting QB until his injury. He also was not a "D2 passer" whatever the hell that means. He was simply injury prone. In short, Reggie Bell was an extremely athletically gifted dual threat QB, whom was deemed to be the starter by Coach Creighton.

RE: QB Competition
When you think about it, going into his 5th year as the Head Coach, this will be the first time that Creighton will consistently have a QB he recruited as the starter. Bell and Roback were both English recruits. I wouldn’t count the young man who started the 2016 season (I’m drawing a blank on his name) as a consistent starter. Bolden either.

I just looked it up, Todd Porter, played those two games when Roback apparently was sat for some issue.

Wiegers mentioned as a transfer candidate here... BTW, if I got this right, Wiegers has sat behind Rudock (Lions), Beathard (49ers), Nathan Stanley (I assume a future NFLer).

Talk about bad luck!! And a LOT of high majors have a lot of depth at QB. Many P5 teams might have 2 or 3 QBs who are good enough to start in that conference.

https://247sports.com/Article/Stay-or-go...-112556348

"Ryan Boyle, Iowa – After switching to wide receiver as a junior, Boyle had a change of heart this offseason and moved back to quarterback. Boyle, 247Sports’ No. 12 dual-threat QB in the 2015 class, served as the Hawkeyes’ third-string QB all year and did not travel to Nebraska for the team’s regular season finale. Boyle wants to play QB and hasn’t played at all, which is usually a recipe for a transfer. And considering Nathan Stanley isn’t going anywhere this offseason, it seems rather likely Boyle will move on. Watch out for Stanley’s backup, rising fifth-year senior Tyler Wiegers, as well."

Steve, you are correct on all counts...A little bit about Ryan Boyle. He played his HS ball at Dowling High Shool (West Des Moines). Dowling is THE State of Iowa powerhouse, they are a dynasty, (look it up, I think they have won 5 straight state titles). I live 10 miles from their campus, they are big time. He was All-State QB on the state champion team and he was a big name recruit for Iowa. He could not even get close to the playing field with Rudock, Beathard, and Wiegers in front of him so he switched to WR and then I think to DB. As you noted, he is back on the depth chart at QB with Wiegers transferring to EMU. Boyle is one of those local kids who dreams of playing for Iowa, so I doubt he will be moving on.

I gotta tell you, I am genuinely excited about EMU football with the addition of Wiegers and it is only still January!

I don't know how to give players 'mental stars' 1 - 5 but these B1G players who get stuck in a line at QB for B1G schools are learning that there are plenty of starting opportunities at G5 schools.

Just think of what WMU had this year. A grad transfer could have stepped in there.
