It’s not in the historic district or anything but that area of Abercorn is still considered downtown.
No it isn’t. It isn’t even midtown. Armstrong is located in what is referred to as southside Savannah.
Depends on what your definition of downtown is. I consider the Historic district, midtown, south side district, Victorian distric, etc to all be part of “downtown Savannah.” There isn’t a specific area called “downtown” it’s split up into parts.

It's funny, because I feel this merger is primarily just to try and reverse Savannah's decline.
I think it's a bit overly dramatic to say the main campus is going to be going to Savannah, but I do think any future academic facilities are probably more likely to get built in Savannah even thought the construction would be cheaper in Statesboro.

It is pretty much land locked unless we buy the little vacant land around it. Unless we start building high rises it will be physically impossible for the Sav Campus to ever rival the Statesboro campus....It will likely have a bunch of core classes, one or two programs and grad classes. We also will never pay to use the Sav Civic center when we can play for "free" in Stateboro... Unless it is for a big name like Duke or maybe a thUGA game...

I heard that the BOR owns all the vacant land around that campus. I don't know if that's true but I do think there is room to expand that campus if they need to. It won't ever be as large as the one in Statesboro though. And getting big name teams to come play us would literally be the point of using that arena. Plus the city of Savannah would probably cut us a deal since a game like that would help boost their economy. You think Little Rock is making Arkansas pay an arm and a leg to host a game in their city every year?

Not true and and yes a little room which is the point a little room. Yes I am sure Sav govt well be bending over backwards to bring in three thousand people at best for a Sun Belt basketball game.

According to some Troy folks, some decades ago Troy was secretly looking to move its campus from Troy to Dothan, Alabama. I guess it had to do with some local politics where the City of Troy wasn't seeing eye-to-eye with the school. Wound up never happening though... although there is a Troy University at Dothan campus that was established in 1961.
Maybe other Trojan folk on here have heard of that also?

About as outrageously laughable as getting Duke or UNC to give up a home game to play GS team away...

The University of Arkansas isn't paying a dime to play at War Memorial. They only reason they play a game there at all is the state legislature makes them.
They don't pay but they do lose money since Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville holds more and draws better. While I've never been, I hear War Memorial in Little Rock is a dump. I bet they stop playing in Little Rock after the contract ends this year.

RE: The Future of Georgia Southern is in Savannah
(01-03-2018 10:30 AM)TrueBlueDrew Wrote: Georgia Southern's consolidation of Armstrong State's campuses became official as of January 1st. Georgia Southern now has three campuses: the main one in Statesboro, a large one that currently has 7k students in lower downtown Savannah, and a military-serving campus located on Fort Stewart. GS is now ~28,000 students large, the 4th largest in GA.
Normally, this wouldn't be a topic for a sports board, but it could affect where some Olympic teams in the SBC play and travel to in the future.
Unlike other state mergers like KSU/Southern Poly and GAST/Ga Perimeter which were right down the street from each other, Georgia Southern's campuses are a little less than an hour apart, but the Savannah Campus is not a branch at all. For now, all classes will be taught on both campuses and all students will be full-fledged, athletic-fee-paying students. Transportation will be provided to Savannah students to and from all home football games in Statesboro.
Georgia Southern is also moving the offices of some of its colleges to the Savannah Campus, namely GS's two most prestigious ones: School of Nursing and College of Education. This could mean that in the future, specific upper level classes might only be taught on one campus and students who would have attended class in Statesboro might now be moving to Savannah. That would spell doom for the City of Statesboro. In any rate, Georgia Southern will look and feel radically different in 5-10 years.
The expansion of the Savannah campus has already begun with a new Healthcare Professions College on the way and new dorms and auxiliary buildings having been finished recently.
Georgia Southern's Savannah Campus:
For the future of Georgia Southern Sports:
All sports will continue to be played in Statesboro. However, since Savannah students pay athletic fees, different ideas have been tossed around to include the Savannah campus in sporting decisions and opportunities. Georgia Southern will most likely host volleyball, tennis, or even baseball/softball tournaments in Savannah going forward. Armstrong built a brand new 2M dollar tennis complex right before the consolidation was announced and has adequate facilities for things like volleyball and softball.
The City of Savannah is also building a 200M dollar basketball arena to replace the current dinosaur of a Civic Center. The arena will be 9,000-10,000 seats and will be located in the Canal District of downtown. With no other major sports in the city needing a facility like that, I think they are assuming that GS will play some games there or use it for tournaments. This would significantly help Georgia Southern with scheduling out of conference basketball games. Read more on the new arena here: http://www.savannahga.gov/arena
And how is this relevant to the Sun Belt Conference?

If you read the post, I said this could affect where your olympic sports travel to and what facility they play at.
Regardless, there are a lot of threads that are non sport related on this page. I seem to recall a pretty lengthy thread dedicated solely to discussing the collapse of South’s indoor facility not too long ago so...

Ignore him, anything that has to do with the schools growing or changing inevitably has a direct or indirect effect on the other schools

Savannah State players packing heat!!!
Overall, the topic was an insight of possibilities and limitations for the Savannah campus.
As for SPORTS, we shall know more in the upcoming years with the classes being offered. If Savannah campus continues to not limit but expand those early Frosh and Soph Core classes then I can envision the Savannah Campus expanding and possibly transitioning in sports like tennis years down the road. If Savannah campus decides to limit those core classes and move more towards Grad study then the Savannah campus will just be a branch of the Statesboro main campus.
Either way, it's a win for Georgia Southern because it allows them to expand their brand while reducing competition of a neighboring University.
Personally, I like the Savannah campus as I've taken classes at Armstrong. It's a nice and safe area of Savannah with abundance amount of shopping and close proximity to I-95. I'd personally hope they expand Savannah campus with traditional Southern classes while offering more Grad level. Giving students the option to attend both campuses is a great thing. In addition, there's many more part time job opportunities in Savannah for students that pay better than Statesboro. I envision advertisement for Georgia Southern to drastically expand along I-95 and Savannah. Lot's of BLUE will come to the area!

Maybe merging with Savannah State is the next move? The campuses are 9 miles apart. The merger would add 3,000 students and add a football field in Savannah for Georgia Southern to play.
