Sun Belt Endowments
I just saw this in the Chronicle of Higher Education. I'm not sure if it is behind a paywall, but here is the link. It looks like this is data from 802 US and 14 Canadian universities that participated in the 2018 Nacubo-TIAA Study of Endowments. Data in millions of dollars.

1. Harvard - $38,303.4 (+6.3% since last year)

2. U of Texas System - 30.886.0 (16.4%)
94. U of Arkansas Foundation - 1,199.3 (+20.4%)
125. Louisiana State 886.4 - (+6.1%)
225. South Alabama Foundation - 374.2 (+2.5%)
329. Texas State - 204.9 (+9.8%)
359. South Alabama - 177.8 (-6.7%)
374. Georgia State - 167.1 (+7.6%)
442. Troy - 120.0 (+14.9%)
469. Appalachian State - 107.6 (+9.1%)
547. Arkansas State - 78.1 (+17.9%)
641. Georgia Southern - 49.7 (+4.2%)
663. Coastal Carolina - 44.7 (+13.3%)

809. Music Institute of Chicago 3.2 (-4.3%)

TXST has been doing a big drive the past few years. I remember when it was half what it is now. Good progress but still need to keep growing.

UCF is surprising, considering it is now the largest university in the country.

Two separate funds; one controlled by the University and one controlled by the Foundation, which is legally separate from the University but set up for the benefit of the University. The Foundation funds are outside the reach of the State of Alabama.

Similarly, the University of Texas system and the various component universities have separate funds. UT Arlington's is somewhere north of $155 million.

That 49.7M number is our school's foundation as well. It does make up a majority of our total endowment, but our website puts our total endowment closer to Arkansas State's.

UCF is surprising, considering it is now the largest university in the country.
The universities with the largest endowments are either land grant universities and/or were founded 150 to 300 years ago.

I get it, but I would not expect them to be this low. I would assume they'll move up quickly.

UCF up until recently was nothing to shake a stick at. It was a commuter school that really didn't have a great rep in the state. I grew up about 15 minutes from UCF and chose to go to college 5 hours away because I had no interest at all in UCF. Locally it was perceived as a slight step above the 2 year community colleges in the area. They have really made a lot of changes in the last 15-20 years or so and have made it a real college campus. They barely even had any dorms until 15 years ago or so.

RE: Sun Belt Endowments
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette had an endowment of $170M as of May 22, 2018 according to the source below. I do not think the Louisiana State endowment is related to the schools in the University of Louisiana System.I think that refers to schools like LSU Eunice, Alexandria, Shreveport, etc. but of course mainly LSU Baton Rouge. Each School in the University of Louisiana system (ULM, UL, McNeese, Southeastern La., etc.) would have their own endowment.
