RE: I Have a New Challenging Exercise for You.....
I've been following along and enjoyed the discussion. Here is what I think. If going to 16 is the most likely scenario, the Big 10 adds Kansas and Iowa State (if we're saying that Oklahoma is already to the SEC and unavailable; I still think they could be Big 10 bound but for this exercise I'll let it go). They could theoretically only add Kansas (as murrdcu stated above) but the scheduling would be a hassle. An out of the box add (which won't happen, but I'd love it) would be WVU instead of Iowa State. This would mostly be a content add although it would strengthen both the western Maryland and western Pennsylvania portions of the market. The reason it won't happen is academics and secondarily, that market that is being strengthened isn't very large.

I feel like the Big 10 is almost more likely to go 20+ if Oklahoma is unavailable. This would be the raid/merger with the Pac. Go with Colorado, an Arizona school, USC & Cal (?), Oregon and Washington to get to 20. Politics may force schools to stay together which is why I think a 20+ school conference would be more likely. Again, for this exercise I stayed at 20. Thanks for having some fun threads to follow and I'm interested to see what y'all think the Big 10 will do.

As stated elsewhere the most likely B1G expansion would be like a push along all of their borders which was originally Nebraska, Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia/Va. Tech, Pittsburgh, Syracuse/Boston College.

We already know that the B1G selected Nebraska as their first move.
Notice which schools are not on the above list. That's right I don't think there is anyway that the B1G would consider adding either Kansas or Oklahoma.

Because of the ACC's GOR, I will rule out Va. Tech, Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Boston College.

That leaves Missouri, Kentucky and West Virginia.

I will go with the obvious choice of Missouri which actually does the SEC a big favor in that it frees up a spot for another Texas school which the SEC desperately needs and West Virginia.
By taking West Virginia the B1G will have secured all of the Public P5 schools in the east North of Virginia in the eastern time zone. This also puts them in a commanding position to control the television market in the Northeast and renews rivalries as conference games with Penn State, Rutgers, and Maryland (this actually makes the eastern pod of the B1G a true stand alone)

West Virginia, Rutgers, Maryland, Penn State
Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Michigan/Michigan State
Purdue, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan/Michigan State

How is that for rules?

As posted earlier, using the same rules for the Big 10 I added: Syracuse, Pitt, Iowa State and ND

East: Syracuse, Pitt, Penn S, Maryland, Rutgers, Purdue
Central: Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan S, Mich, AND
West: northwestern, Iowa, Nebraska, Iowa State, Minnesota, Wisconsin

As with the SEC, the Big 10 would make a run for Texas too.

5-1-3 format and ND keeps Purdue

What was the official SEC league to move forward with? It wouldn't affect my Big 10, but might effect a Pac (especially if the official SEC has Texas)

Okay, for purposes of making this more interesting the rule forbidding defections from the Big 10 and SEC are suspended. If however you posted a scenario for the SEC previously you must present a new scenario for the SEC as you post a scenario for the Big 10. Have fun.

Once the B1G is settled, everything else will fall into place.

The ACC

Boston College, Syracuse, Pitt, and Notre Dame
Louisville, Carolina, UVa, and Virginia Tech
Clemson, Georgia Tech, Duke and South Carolina
Florida State, Miami, Wake Forest, and NC State

The SEC

Alabama, Mississippi State, Tennessee, and Kentucky
Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Vanderbilt
Ole Miss, Arkansas, LSU, and Texas A&M
Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech

The PAC

Who cares how it's divided up, but they add Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, and BYU for football only.
I would have the eastern pod contain: Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State.

TCU and Baylor would join the American in the west which would allow Navy to move to the east where they should be. That would put Baylor and TCU in a division with Memphis, Tulsa, Houston, SMU and Tulane.

The B1G and the PAC can finally resume their scheduling alliance as their combined conferences flow easily from east to west. Maybe some challenge series with some of the old Big 8 schools.

Scenario following the strict "contiguous/2 rival" rule:

Pod 1: TAMU, Texas, LSU, Miss State, Ole Miss
Pod 2: Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt
Pod 3: Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Virginia Tech
Pod 4: Florida, Florida State, Miami, Clemson, Georgia

I don't see any rivals who couldn't be satisfied with a crossover system.

I'll denote it's pretty much impossible to bring in anything related to Missouri under these rules.

Also, I think of utility is a list of teams which meet the two rival rule. And a list of teams they daisy chain in. Parenthesis denotes you can do it, but you need to bring help on board. Off the top of my head:

Clemson -> Virginia Tech (NC State)
(Duke)
Georgia Tech -> Virginia Tech (UNC/Duke/Clemson/ND)
Miami -> (ND)
(NC State)
(North Carolina)
(Notre Dame)
Houston -> SMU, TCU
Oklahoma -> Texas
(Oklahoma State)
(TCU)
Texas -> Oklahoma (ND)
(Texas Tech)
Tulane -> Houston
Virginia Tech -> (UNC/Duke/UVA/WVU)
