High school eliminating the term freshman to be more gender inclusive
Quote:EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WKRC) - A high school in Massachusetts is trying to eliminate the word "freshmen," according to a report by WWLP.

Easthampton High School wants to change the term to "first year students" to be more gender inclusive.

The change was recommended by a Gender and Sexuality Alliance Group at the school. The group went through the school's handbook and came up with suggestions on how the language could be more gender neutral.

“Currently High School students would have the right of free speech to use the term 'freshmen',” James Winston, Esq., told WWLP. "The school would have a very high bar to show that there was some type of harm that would happen with that term being used."

The school's superintendent released a statement making it clear that students could still say freshmen if they choose to.

I hope they realize Senior, Junior are male form of a Latin word... They will have to do away with those as well.

Kind of like the comic Dilbert, when Dogbert changes everyone’s job titles. One of the characters remarked that being part of The SCC Group was better because the old titles made her feel like a second class citizen.

This is the kind of stuff those in academia come up with when they have forgotten what their mission is. I bet money they had multiple meetings and wasted countless hours debating the "merits" of this enlightened stance........meanwhile, 14 year old Bobby can't read for sh!t.........

This whole situation makes me lol.

He must have a school full of geniuses and no need to actually find ways to improve the education going on around there. Surely, he must, considering he is wasting time on the gender identity thing.

The American education system truly gets mind-numbingly dumb with every passing year.

RE: High school eliminating the term freshman to be more gender inclusive
I am from the area - I actually know some of the people involved.

What is unfortunate is the lack of knowledge of the English language by the people involved in recommending this and the school committee who made the decision - while the letters m-a-n actually do spell man, it has absolutely ZERO meaning or connotation in the word Freshman. That in and of itself where this went off the rails.

I am an internet novice so I don't know how to post the link, but in the ultimate irony - the Springfield MA fish wrap article on this story quoted the CHAIRWOMAN of the committee. Look up MassLive website and you can find it in there.

The word Freshman has NO gender connotation while Chairwoman is completely gender specific..... IDIOTS
