it got close at points last year......

Mullet has a decent point there. There were times in the early to mid 2000s when it didn't matter who we were playing. The fans showed up and put out for the team. Student participation is a huge key.

Mullet is right. While there are moments, the atmosphere was not recaptured. Go look at old footage of packed students standing end to end in the bleachers for the entire game being loud and making noise. Due to a plethora of reasons, that has not happened in a while.

I was there a few games last year where it DID happen. It's just not consistent anymore for sure.

Was glad to not see it at the bottom, even though it certainly is close even with the upgrades. When full with a good team the DAC is definitely one of the toughest places to place due to the intimacy of the stands to the court. Unfortunately it has been 5 years since we have had something to be excited over.

How do you get so much intimacy out of fans with seat backs?

With a little bit of effort...

Anyhow that is what I said stands to the court. So unless the physical stands are now people we are talking about 2 different ideas, despite your joke not being missed. Nowadays people are the stands because empty is empty no matter how you slice it.

We the students are working on bringing it back. It’s hard since Sports is not a factor in the decision to come to school here, and sustained success will help if we can somehow turn around and be more competitive in the CAA this year. Do you have links to the old footage? Just curious and can’t find any on YouTube

Can't find any either. But i can tell you first hand, they used to have the old decibel meter, when Blizzard broke the scoring record, it stayed between 110-120 for nearly 5 mins straight it was nuts!

The key is to find original and fun ways for the students to get excited and loud.

I don't think he was using the word "intimacy" the way you just attempted to.

Just realized how that joke came across. I was actually meaning to laugh about the idea that fans sitting on their keesters would provide any sort of difficult atmosphere to the game regardless of how close they are to the court.

Then, when I read y'alls post I realized how that really sounded. I assure you that wasn't my intent. What I get for posting in the middle of the night anyways, I suppose.

When you go from success like that to being one of the worst teams in D1 college basketball, unfortunately the fans and the culture take a hit. Also the invention of the smart phone kills the environment some, but that’s not going away. Does anyone know why they took seating out of trask over the years?

I also agree we need uniqueness at our games, especially for the students almost all of what we do is not original and is just putting UNCW or Seahawks in the chants. Nobody knows the fight song or alma mater and that’s a shame. Any chants or traditions from that early 2000s era that has been lost over the years besides just being loud?

Downstairs didn't used to have seat backs. When they added that, they lost capacity.

Word on the street is that Bass wants alcohol and UNCW Athletics to have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Allowing alcoho and tailgating would attract a new fan base

I'm sure if you do enough asking around some of the legends of old will be brought to light.

Amber Bryant? Gorilla & the Hecklers? Dancing Dave? Or perhaps the guy that changed outfits for each opponent (an exterminator when we played the richmond spiders, Mary had a little lamb when playing vcu rams, etc.) We have had some good ones.

Exactly. Technology has evolved so rapidly over the last decade that it almost seems too easy for students to come up with something new and refreshing to capture the attention of the opposition.

C'mon y'all!!!!

That first part is from my friend who works in the athletic department, the second part is my own speculation. If you have a different source or opinion I have no problem being wrong.

We are allowed to have alcohol at the baseball tailgating. Bass approved that. Can only start tailgating two hours into before game time.
If we build a new baseball stadium where we are looking, alcohol will be sold during the games. The no alcohol sales rule is a UNC system direct at on campus sales. The school has no say-so. But there is apparently some adjoining or nearby property that is not considered part of the campus.

Bass would love to have a "tailgating" atmosphere. Biggest problem is location and monitoring of use. Mostly opposed by VC of Student Affairs.

Gotcha, I misquoted my friend for sure. My fault. I didn’t know that about baseball, that’s fantastic. They are working on “tailgating” this year from Team Teal but it’s hard to start tailgating at 5 for a 7pm game and it’s already dark out.

Could/is there be tailgating in the baseball lot for basketball games?

So would that new baseball stadium be on or off campus?
