Trying To Understand Mickisms
In the last couple of years we have had 2 football coaches who were renowned for making odd comments. One was just corny as heck, the other was an idiot. Mick was great post brawl. Said and did the right things. In the last few years he has continued to baffle many of us with his pre and post game comments. Offense is for friends and family. The X game is just another game on the schedule. Wins and losses are for lay people. I am sure I have missed many. I just do not understand where he is coming from when he says these things. Have the expectations risen so much for him that he constantly deflects with this nonsense? It sure does not seem like a motivational tool so what is it?

RE: Trying To Understand Mickisms
Mick suffers from little man syndrome. He'll rather be the underdog than favorite. "Award Chases" with certain players to try beat his chest recruiting rankings doesn't matter. Only say X game doesn't matter so he can use excuse I dont care anyway when he gets outmatched.

I imagine the 2 things that most of us can agree on are:

1. Mick is overpaid for the product we get
2. Mick generally does himself no favors in interviews

I'm starting to think he was right to look at UNLV. This fanbase turns in short order from Thanksgiving posts being thankful he is here to this in 2 games. Prosaic should be the named sponsor of the new arena.

Prosaic certainly describes our program. I think you've nailed it:

Prosaic coach
Prosaic program

Yup.

These posts have been here for years. Some were deluded into thinking this was a special team. Instead we received the 2017 edition of Groundhog Day.

We can't understand what he is saying. After all, we are just "lay people".

I think pretty much any fan base of a top 25 program is going to have high expectations. I doubt it's much easier dealing with fan pressure anywhere else at this level.

The difference is those programs already have built in collateral. I saw a post about Duke losing. Well Coach K has 5 nattys and 1100 wins. Mock has 1 sweet 16 and 0 elite 8s. I'm cool with letting this season play out, but if just making it to the tournament is good enough then I am going to have to start spending my time and money else where.

Nope. Never said I wanted him gone. Just don't understand his thinking and attitude sometimes.

I would just take Mick channeling his aggression into his players and stop worrying about the other teams' kid in the handshake line. Put the confidence and swagger back in UC basketball!

The post game press conference is the craziest thing in sports. Lets go ask the losing coach in a hard fought game how he feels about losing the game.

I am really angry we lost the game, the players don't listen, the refs botched a no call, and would rather do anything right now than talk to the media or fans about what just happened. What is any coach suppose to say after they lose?

RE: Trying To Understand Mickisms
Not really sure where to put this since there are so many threads talking about Mick, but here are my thoughts:

- You have to throw out the first 4 years of his time here. Rebuilding the mess that was left in the toughest conference in college basketball shouldn't count against him.
- Changing conferences and thus recruiting territories halfway through his tenure was quite the curveball and should be considered when judging the entire picture.
- With that said, I'm not thrilled with just one S16 in the seven "real" years we've had under Cronin. We have made the tournament every one of those years, and that's something, but still.
- This year will go a long way as to how Cronin is judged. Make the S16 (or further) this year, and I'm happy. Progress continues. Barring injury, I still see that as likely.

I think we all want to make the S16 every year and have the chance to continue that journey. I currently think Mick can do that.
