Sounds like ESPN-3. For a conference like ours, it sounds like home for 3rd tier rights. It also sounds like a good option for the MW to regain complete control over start times.
Well now. That's an interesting development and could possibly explain that stupid g5 playoff topic that kept popping up. ESPN appears to be going for the kill as far as the g5/p5 split. The AAC is about to be in possible the most important contract negotiations ever for it's future. I hope this doesn't depress our future income figures because ESPN apparently not going to be offering any huge increase to throw us in the discount bin with the Sunbelt and Cusa. NBC could be preparing to pounce on our tier 1 inventory, however I think know at a lower price knowing what ESPN 's planning to do. On the bright side CBS is going to have to actually bid on our tier 2 rights because they'd have to assume that the mouse is not going to be offering them games on an as needed basis 07-coffee3

Interestingly---we can upset that apple cart by simply not participating. We dont have to be part of the discount bin "JV Playoff brought to you by "ESPN-3 Go" and Billy Bobs Tire and Wheel. One thing it does appear to verify---there is value in becoming the defacto "network of record" for G5 football. It is a relatively large and under served audience with no real home. I still think this would be an excellent space for either NBC-Sports or CBS-Sports to take thier Saturday programming. Start off with a GameDay type show that visits to G5 schools and highlights the big G5 games of the day. Imagine, a network that treats G5 games as seriously as P5 games. That would instantly become the Saturday home for most G5 fans. Apparently, ESPN thinks it can work---they just want to tie up the concept and relegate it to the digital streaming discount bin of invisible programming.

If ATT-TimeWarner deal goes through, and it should, ATT, now with TurnerSports, needs to partner with CBS Sports as they did with the Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament. Maybe fashion an 'NCAAT Ticket' much like ATT-Directv NFL Sunday Ticket.

Where I'm going with this is what you said about the underserved G5. AAC and MW athletics would be a nice anchor for an ATT/CBS sports-only partnership. Much like the birth of the BigEast Conference was for fledgling espn, only no weird mixing of Catholic school with public school football. MW and AAC wouldn't need to merge. We'd still have 4 time zones between us. Will need both commishes to explain to fans that rooting for both the MW and AAC members helps both the MW and the AAC.

As far as OTA, the very best could go on CBS OTA. But mostly, since CBS and TW already have The CW OTA joint ownership in select markets, a partnership between ATT and CBS to expand to a super majority of OTA markets by together buying out more local OTA tv stations, would place att/cbs with an outlet for placing MW and AAC games on a large OTA penetration nationally. Part of our tv deal with ATT-TW/CBS would be each of the 24 members receiving an annual scheduling voucher for football and men's basketball. Increasing the chances of home-and-homes with P5 teams. This giving ATT/CBS sports partnership big OOC content - if they can't own the P5 home games, own their away games at MW and AAC home fields and courts.

And with ATT's communications network, they could bank up on servers and have a joint online digital sports network with cbs to rival WatchESPN. Add in ATT's mobile network into the mix, and an ATT-TW/CBS/MW/AAC+NCAAT-Ticket+OtherPossible"Tickets"(such as an affordable 'AAC/MW Athletics Ticket'), this sports content and broadcast partnership sounds like a great competitor to the Disney-ESPN sports monolith.

The TV ratings numbers are the numbers. Now part of the difference is probably due to the top 5 getting better networks and better times (ESPN vs ESPNU or ESPN NEWS) But there does appear to be quite a gap in tv numbers. It doesn't mean the American can't get a better TV contract than they have had, but it is hard to say that the American has the same TV drawing power as the SEC or Big 10.

And it does show that the American certainly has a lot more TV drawing power than the bottom 3 or even the MWC (even though I grouped them together, the AAC viewership is 50% better than the MWC, that does seem significant to me).

So stay with espn instead of an ATT/CBS sports partnership with more national accessibility of MW and AAC sports and more revenue for our conferences? Also, we'd be the premiere college sports content for this partnership, hence, better start times.

You "pass" without understanding. I am presuming what this att-tw/cbs joint venture should pattern around the fledgling espn startup model with MW and AAC as their anchor, along with their NCAAT partnership. Sounds very doable and better than anything else AAC or MW would get otherwise. Of course, ATT and CBS would have to be planted with this idea first. Anybody know anyone high up in the ATT and/or CBS ranks? Aresco, you frequent this board? 04-rock

I'm skeptical this would work. But I hope the right people pursue it as one negotiating strategy among others.

I have no interest in being associated with the MWC and we have spent a lot of time and money with the P6 campaign basically saying we shouldn't be associated with them. Now you're telling me we should change our strategy 180 degrees so we can cash in on a partnership with a conference that has something like 70% of our viewership. All this on a network work that already buys our inventory and will likely be a proactive bidder on our product standalone in the upcoming contract negotiations.

Once again I'll have to pass.

Not sure what G4 fans have to talk about this time of year other than who will get their #13-15 MBB auto-bid...

0.395 - Sun Belt
0.267 - CUSA

Anyone that watched under that line fell asleep with the TV on. Such a waste of electricity.

Unfortunately it looks more like 3 pretty clear groups to me:

AVERAGE
11.130 - SEC
9.274 - Big Ten
7.819 - ACC
6.979 - Big 12
6.002 - Pac 12

__________________________Top TV conferences/Middle TV Conf.
1.680 - AAC
1.190 - MWC

_______________________Middle TV conferences/Bottom group

0.574 - MAC
0.395 - Sun Belt
0.267 - CUSA

The TV ratings numbers are the numbers. Now part of the difference is probably due to the top 5 getting better networks and better times (ESPN vs ESPNU or ESPN NEWS) But there does appear to be quite a gap in tv numbers. It doesn't mean the American can't get a better TV contract than they have had, but it is hard to say that the American has the same TV drawing power as the SEC or Big 10.

And it does show that the American certainly has a lot more TV drawing power than the bottom 3 or even the MWC (even though I grouped them together, the AAC viewership is 50% better than the MWC, that does seem significant to me).

my P6 demarcation line stands

psst....uh...let us do the football P6/G4 presentations....we are trained for this sort of thing. You worry about hoops stuff.

It’s not hard to say the AAC doesn’t have SEC or Pac12 drawing power. It’s easy to see the AAC isn’t that level of draw—and nobody here has said it is. The AAC is a Big Bang for the buck property. We draw 50% of the audience for 25% of the price. That why I keep thinking 5-8 million makes a lot of sense as our final value.

Nothing really new here but BYU AD talking about independence and possible future contract negotiations for after 2019 season.

Interesting the AAC is mentioned in the same context as BYU and options outside of independence.

Byu has had recent series with Cincinnati, Ecu, Houston and UCF, and Connecticut. Maybe it is circumstance or maybe BYU is giving us a test drive.

BYU isn’t coming. A Notre Dame deal or some sort of scheduling agreement is the best deal likely to be on the table.

Which hopefully there is 0% chance of happening. What I think is more likely is that Byu is going to continue living out their "we're equal to the big boys as long as we keep up our Notre Dame lite fantasy " until they're almost completely irrelevant. At that point they'll try to dictate some unreasonable terms to the AAC for inclusion that will only benefit Byu, which will be soundly rejected 04-cheers

I agree ^.
Also, the AAC was hardly mentioned in the article. From the article:
BYU is "trying to get into a P5" that "P5/Notre Dame have all the power" that "the freeze with the MWC could be over"...."ongoing talks with all 12 MWC AD's" and finally that the BYU AD "talks to Mike Aresco; they have a good relationship"
Doesn't sound like BYU is coming to the AAC anytime soon. Tigersmoke is right, when they are forced to, they will come to the AAC with a one sided ridiculous offer to partner up...And the AAC says No thanks.

Football only membership is not an option we don't want the old big east again. . . I kid, I kid.

It's not in the options, it's not financially solid with travel, mostly for BYU. A scheduling alliance could work, but if it doesn't happen before the next tv deal it won't. Then BYU will slowly fade away or enter a purgatory of small bowl games and 7 or 8 win seasons most years. BYU's pride wont allow them to ask for the AAC membership at that point so they will cease to be nationally relevant.

I think that it's some wishful thinking or speculation "of the freeze" with the MW is over. They can't come back unless they bring football with them.
However, the sense I get from the MW doesn't care for BYU to be in the conference. We are all happy with 12/11 setup and really don't care about BYU anymore. Enough time has passed that BYU isn't a factor for us anymore. Especially, now that we have seen that some of our non-BSU conference games gets higher ratings than BYU.
