Conyers announces retirement, endorses his son to replace him
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/12/...d-him.html

Quote:Rep. John Conyers on Tuesday announced his retirement from Congress while in a Michigan hospital bed, saying he is endorsing his son, John Conyers III, for the seat he has held for more than a half century amid growing sexual-misconduct allegations.

“I’m retiring today,” the 88-year-old Michigan Democrat said in a phone interview with a local radio station from a Detroit hospital, where he has been since last month after experiencing chest pains. “I want everyone to know how much I appreciate [their] support.”

Quote:He made his announcement Tuesday on Praise 102.7’s “The Mildred Gaddis Show.”

Conyers’ endorsement of his son was unexpected, considering his great-nephew, Ian Conyers, a Michigan state senator, said earlier that Conyers would not seek re-election in 2018, instead of retiring, and that he would run for the open seat.

Quote:The younger, Conyers, 27, would be a first-time political candidate. But has already been connected to an ethics issue, according to the Detroit Free Press. In 2010, the congressman had to reimburse the Treasury Department $5,682 for his son’s misuse of a taxpayer-funded Cadillac Escalade, the paper reports.

Conyers’s wife, Monica Conyers, was in 2010 sentenced to more than three years in prison for taking cash, as a Detroit council member, to support a Houston company’s sludge contract with the city.

This old fart has been in Congress for such a long time that he thinks he's royalty and can just appoint his son to his seat, you know, like Killery thought...(it's her turn). King Conyers for us peons, has spoken.

A lot of people in congress think that they are royalty. I remember when Ted Kennedy died everyone referred to it as "Ted's Senate Seat", and a number of people were assuming that the next senator from Mass. needs to be a Kennedy. Too bad the seat really belongs to the state of Massachusetts. The arrogance of these people can be staggering.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the governor of the state appoint a retiring/fired congressman? If so, is the Michigan governor a Demon or a Rep.

Rick Snyder is a Republican. So if he chooses to go ahead and appoint a replacement, the seat will be in Republican hands until November 2018.

Governors appoint Senators in the event of a vacancy. They will just set a date for an election to fill an empty congressional seat.

Yeah, that's it. I was mistaken about which one they picked. Ollie, I hope that answers your question.

If you told me tomorrow that the United States government passed a law that said no offspring of a sitting elected official of any type can be appointed to, or run for, any elected office of any type - well, I wouldn't put up much a fight......

Eh, they're entitled to at least run for political office. They have to actually earn it. The fact it's not automatically the offspring's seat is good enough for me.

I suspect he had planned his retirement long ago and he allowed himself to be the sacrificial lamb in exchange for party support for his son's bid for his seat.

How swamp of him.

Well, I already know Americans are dumb enough to do what he wants. We just keep voting for the same dummies over and over again. Until that changes, the swamp will never drain.

His seat is now being held by the fake Indian they call Pocahontas.

Michigan will hold a special election to fill his seat. Conyers has held the seat since I was born (1964). During that time, he's never won less than 77 percent of the vote. It's an incredibly blue district - no Republican will have a chance to win that seat.

But will any Democrat who isn't his relative have a chance?

The voters will decide that. I'm sure there will be plenty of non-Conyers running for the seat.

I bet it has really become a garden spot since he took office.

At the percentage rate he was being re-elected, I seriously doubt anyone will come close to touching his son's chances. Don't be naïve enough to believe anyone in that district is actually voting based on policy.
