What they told you is correct. Visitors' bench is now on the old home side (the bigger side with the press box).

Reason being so the visiting players have to stare into the setting sun instead of us.

Tactical advantage.

The parking lot on 501 is nice, it's a hike. There is a lot on 544. Bout a half mile from campus. It has a shuttle though. Those are your only options, everything else is premium parking

There's obvious staff changes coming, I'm guessing the motivation wasn't there.

In any case, the game didn't really mean anything in the big picture. What's the real difference between 3-9 and 2-10? Nothing really.
