RE: Latest Episode of "The Beat and the Beard" UNCW sports podcast
Is there a team in the CAA that is a bad matchup for UNCW? Is it fair to say that UNCW, on any given night, could beat any team in the CAA?

I think we covered everyone's questions, which is why this week's episode is a little long.

ALSO: I am getting the chance to sit down with CAA commissioner Joe D'Antonio tomorrow for lunch. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask him, send them immediately!

One question. CAA EXPANSION. Is it in the works to have a North/South bracket to save on travel costs and time away ala the ACC?

I feel I need to ask "the beard" if he has a regular concussion protocol after his "performances" at the games....?

Yes, please do this. What happened to the ESPN deal that looked like it was going to happen? What is the plan moving forward b/c status quo is terrible?

Does he really think it is a good idea to move the Semis to Monday and the Championship to Tuesday? That sounds like a great way to kill attendance.

Does he think a round robin conference from Boston MA to Charleston SC is sustainable long term for a mid major league? Are they looking to expand and create north/south divisions to ease the travel burden?

What are his long term goals for the CAA?

EDIT: Here is background on the foundation of the potential ESPN CAA tv deal that never happened.

What is the selection process like to become a referee? I think I qualify, but just want to be sure.

A friend & I used to choose a ref each year to win our "White Cane Award". We are seriously considering re-instituting it. Especially after Saturday's game.

Publishing it shortly. Nothing too earth shattering but some good insight into a very diverse league.

Good job w/ the interview Alex.

Would love for you to post about your thoughts of his answers if you are allowed.

Honestly though, this guy did not impress me very much. He talked about how the CAA didn't want to pay production costs, but then talked about paying production costs for the College Sports Live GOTW. That is asinine as there is no difference between CAA.TV and College Sports Live in terms of availability or popularity.

If the league was going to end up paying production costs anyways, then why not pay them for a Comcast Sports Net, which actually has broad distribution on a linear platform, instead of a platform identical to CAA.TV? It just doesn't make any sense and shows the league office really dropped the ball on this one.

Appreciate you posting the link, solohawk. I'll hold my thoughts on his interview for this week's podcast. And some of the stuff he said sparked some thoughts in my head that could likely lead to a story. Stay tuned!

Great podcast. But the guy reminds me of Tom Yeager - but with a northern accent. I agree - the TV piece of the puzzle is a tough nut to crack, but if he had a clue about how to crack it he kept it to himself. I fear he wasn't keeping any secrets because he has no plan on how to improve the situation.

When Alex asked him about where he sees the CAA in five years, he started spewing on about APR....which the league office has little if anything with which to do. He didn't talk about things with which it has EVERYTHING to do.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.....

Great perspective 70s. He has talking points but no plans.

I don't envy his job as the CAA has evolved into a mishmash of schools with no true identity, but there were things on there he was dead wrong about

Said we should be excited for 3 national TV games. That is a major regression from last year and just embarrassing when compared to leagues considered peers to the CAA

Need to move to a Friday/Sunday conference schedule with an ESPN deal for a national game almost every Friday on ESPN2 or ESPNU. With the other games all streaming on ESPN3. Horizon and MAAC have a similar setup. I have watched countless Horizon and MAAC games on Friday nights because their is nothing else on sports wise (don't care about the NBA).

We would also get better refs playing on Friday/Sunday.
