I understand I'm not the one being interviewed, but I would start with the first year of the CAA name. With the likes of GMU, VCU, ODU, UNCW, W&M, JMU and even ECU. I would add Hofstra, Delaware, Drexel and Charleston. Then one more from a list of Coastal Carolina, UNCG, or Georgia State. May be forgetting one or two more to choose from.
That would make an even twelve.
Excluding FBS Schools to keep it semi realistic:
I would do an old school 9 team round robin league
GMU
VCU
W&M
JMU
Richmond
UNCW
UNCG
CoC
Davidson
How could I forget Richmond? The only school that voted against us joining.
I never knew that. Man they have always had it out for us huhh

For some reason Richmond believed we would bring down the conference academically. Didn't understand that until some of the female fans would show up at Trask in big fur coats. A lot of rich, snooty supporters. They literally looked down their noses at us beach town fans.

The irony is amusing, considering Richmond is largely a $shithole!

It was also a Richmond newspaper that spread a false rumor that we voted against ECU joining the CAA.

RE: Latest Episode of "The Beat and the Beard" UNCW sports podcast
Since we're getting close to the start of baseball season; one of our most successful baseball products in the majors, Chris Hatcher, declared for free agency in Oct '18. Is there any news anywhere that he's close to signing with another team considering the mid-Feb pitchers and catchers report date is not far?

Unless i missed something, he was dropped form the 40 man and sent down to the minors, he's still under A's control for one more year, his third year of Arbitration

Wikipedia says he opted for FA in October...

Also... I'd like to hear more about what led to him breaking his teammate's jaw in the Marlins' minor league system. Sheeeeeeesh.

that's interesting. I found the Article where he got sent down, and Sportrac, still has him as A's with 2019 Arb 3. Sport trac is pretty reliable.

What is Marty Feurer's connection to UNCW? I enjoy his commentary during home games because he seems to know basketball and is definitely not a homer. He is not afraid to offer criticism when it is warranted.

Agree. He’s really improved in his sophomore season on the mic with Mike V. Great complement and I also like his unbiased take. Good question on the UNCW connection. I’m interested to hear that answered.

If you have any questions for this week's show, submit them now. Also, Michael and I will be talking about a rebuilt CAA/new conference. So if you've got suggestions on that, send them along

Here's one for you: Why don't you guys speculate on what changes Karen Barefoot would make if she were to find herself suddenly in charge of the existing UNCW men's team?

Lots of fixing in Episode 94 of The Beat and The Beard. We tackle UNCW's defense and what an ideal new conference would look like if we had our way.

Great podcast as usual. BUT, it isn't true that we haven't had ANY defense that has worked. You know what i'm going to say.....:-).

Worked, and "working better" are two entirely different things. But certainly what you would say is the lesser of two evils

Latest Episode of "The Beat and the Beard" UNCW sports podcast
Great episode gents. Finally had time to listen to it.
Question for next go ‘round, and I’m gonna take a sec to set this one up on the tee...
I know all that football talk made Michael’s heart and head hurt, but it has once again intrigued me. The conference “blow up” question spoke to how UNCW should be part of a conference that doesn’t have split loyalties with football. Why does UNCW avoid a football program. The student body has nearly doubled (I think) since I graduated in ‘06. The campus is huge in comparison now. The land isn’t a problem. Recruiting in NC wouldn’t be a problem. Startup cost would be. Travel, etc. is it time for UNCW to seriously weigh the pros and cons of starting a football team, instead of just dismissing the idea.
There are plenty of schools that have started programs in the last decade and been relatively successful. Not to mention the draw for alumni and just more general excitement and future alumni/donors for the school and Athletic Dept.

Sure, in a lot of places. Think about what makes our basketball attendance so strong in the community though. Partly because we’re the only D1 show unless you wanna drive a couple hours. Plus the growing student population could more easily support it. I’m just saying the old reasons for not doing it are dwindling due to growth. Can’t hurt to at least discuss.
