They did not play him until he was ready; they put him in at the perfect part of the schedule; and they scheme to his strengths not his weaknesses. Yet, they still give him chances to make big plays. If your a Childers fan, you should be elated with how he has been coached.
He made the one pass he needed to make tonight. The bigger play was Wineman’s catch in 3rd down. It was not a well thrown ball but he was able to make a difficult catch. All three of Childers deep passes went incomplete (all were open); one was over thrown to Wineman, the other two (Blake and Tears) were underthrown so badly that they were actually effective. They both resulted in Defensive PI penalties (those don’t go against his completion %). He is giving Carey everything he wants, and for the most part it’s working.
C'mon, Djud. 65 yards. That is giving FireRod all he wants?
I don't want to come down on the kid, but it's a shaky path when an offense can't generate anything from the aerial game. They got through it tonight, but that is not a blueprint for continued success
I am not a huge advocate of this offensive scheme; but it is giving Carey exactly what he wants, and it suits Childers perfectly.
This is what Carey wants in order of priority.
1) NO TURNOVERS; check
2) NO TURNOVERS; check
There is no bigger priority to Carey than this (see the Santa story as evidence);Childers did not turn the ball over
3) Run the football; Childers is still not at 100%; yet he still forces the defense to account for him due to his run threat ability.
4) complete the short, high % passes. For the most part he does this; yesterday was conditions were very tough.
5) when the opportunity to hit the HR is there, because you are successful at #3 & #4; make the play. This is were he has really struggled.
You don’t necessarily need to be good at #5 when you have a dominating defense that can score and create turnovers (and you play in a very weak conference)
This is what I mean when I say Childers is giving Carey nearly everything he wants.
I would love to know from our clueless friend, what exactly would he do differently in terms of play calling/scheme to better position Childers for success. Also, how could Childers been handled any better? In my opinion he is the one QB has been handled in a perfect manner.
