San Diego State Aztecs
By the time we play SDSU next year they may no longer be the Aztecs. Pretty much nobody wants to change it but busybody teachers.

STFU. Because we all know how "conservatives" are making this world better. You do know that most "liberals" have college degrees, right? #Murica!

In reading this it seems that they are not changing the name, just the graphics.

Dear WoodenNickle,
Yes, this reminds me of the Eastern debate, when we were to drop the logo, and the Indian Chief, but keep the nickname. Of course that wonderful president we had at the time went against the vast majority, including two Chiefs of the Huron tribe.

This article suggests the faculty senate only approved changing the 'human depiction' of the mascot, not the actual Aztec name. It also says "Senate Chair Marcie Bober-Michel, a professor in the School of Journalism and Media Studies told the Daily Aztec, the school’s student newspaper, she does not expect the resolution to be approved by Roush." So it's likely this won't mean anything.

Much ado about nothing.

These kind of people don't stop. Changing the mascot would only encourage them.

Their president has an interim position and would likely pass the buck.

Encourage them to do what, exactly? Oh do tell.

Continue their crusade. They will take aim at the nickname. People who disagree will be smeared as racists. Faithful alumni will be attacked.

I'll repeat a comment made discussing UofM:

"Nothing good will come of discussing this subject on an EMU board."

I had an EMU coach tell me he pulled athletic awards out of the garbage because they had the dreaded name Hurons on them.

Wait a minute, people in Southern California are still acting like this at football games?

I wonder what's worse, culturally speaking, eliminating the idea that an Aztec is a person or keeping the name and humanizing it?

Today I read that the U of Denver is getting pressure to change its oppressive nickname the Pioneers.

There's the link. What you left out is that it's the Native American students at the school that are protesting the name, and it's about a mascot that had initially been banned back in 1998 when they transitioned to D1 sports.

Politicians and academics always searching for something to stay relevant. Create some controversy and divisiveness where there really is none.

"polls show Native Americans largely supportive of team names referencing National American icons or tribes."

"students have rejected past referendums calling for a name change. The faculty senate then stepped in to force the change."
