5 dead. 5 others shot, including people at the school. Rifle...semi automatic. Will it be an AR-15?

And handguns.

Quote:Flint said his neighbor had been shooting "hundreds of rounds" from large magazines. Investigators have recovered a semi-automatic rifle, in addition to two handguns.

RE: Another School shooting
Unverified at this point, but being reported the shooter was a felon.

http://heavy.com/news/2017/11/rancho-teh...ol-deaths/

Quote:An eyewitness told the news media that his roommate was wounded and that the gunman was a felon who had been his neighbor. “Brian Flint …said he received a call in the morning that his roommate was injured and that his truck had been stolen too,” reported The Record Searchlight, quoting him as saying, “The crazy thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines. We made it aware that this guy is crazy and he’s been threatening us.”

Last time I checked it was illegal for felons to possess firearms. (I'm just as shocked as everyone else that a felon ignored the law) If the authorities were called why wasn't he in jail?

RE: Another School shooting
http://heavy.com/news/2017/11/kevin-jans...l-shooter/

Quote:Kevin Janson Neal was identified as the shooter who went on a rampage throughout Rancho Tehama, shooting bullets through classroom windows at the local elementary school and randomly targeting four people for death, while wounding as many as 10 others, including children.

Quote:Neal was already in trouble with the law before the shooting rampage. District Attorney Gregg Cohen told The Sacramento Bee that “Neal was currently being prosecuted by his office for assault with a deadly weapon and a stabbing that had occurred earlier this year,” the newspaper reported.

A Red Bluff Daily News crime log from February 2017 reported: “Kevin Janson Neal: 43, of Corning was arrested Tuesday in the 6900 block of Bobcat Lane in Rancho Tehama. He was booked into Tehama County Jail on the charges of assault with deadly weapon not firearm or force, great bodily injury likely, battery on person, crime against elder or dependent adult, discharge firearm with gross negligence and false imprisonment with violence. Bail was $160,000.”

The District Attorney told the Bee that the rampage started by Neal’s home, although he wasn’t yet sure of the motive, and he said that the previous incident involved two of Neal’s neighbors, although it’s not known whether they were among the victims.

Got this link off of a comments section for a local newspaper. Can't speak to it's accuracy but it does provide links and seems legit. If true, Neal was a convicted felon who should have been in jail but was on the street because of a lax legal system.

https://everipedia.org/wiki/kevin-dale-martin/

Quote:2013 Arrest

On September 20, 2013 Kevin Martin was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance for sale and transportation of a controlled substance. The arrest took place at a More For Less store in Los Molinos, California. His bail was set at $40,000. Martin was on a bicycle around 10 p.m. Wednesday when he was pulled over for having no headlight. Police determined Martin was on probation and conducted a probation search. They found 5.4 grams of methamphetamine in four separate bags. [11]

2015 Arrest

On January 3, 2015 Kevin Martin was arrested by Tehama County Sheriff's Office, Officer Jungswirth for multiple drug charges in Los Molinos, CA. He was charged with five charges including felony transportation of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for sale, failure to appear and misdemeanors of false identification to a peace officer and failure to appear. His bail was set at $150,000. Four of the charges were dismissed however he was sentenced to 10 years, 3 months, and 29 days on a single charge of felony transportation of a controlled substance. [9] [10]

Now math was never my strong subject but even I can figure out that were he serving his 10 year, 3 month, and 29 days sentence he wouldn't have been able to do this shooting. Because of his felony conviction he legally couldn't purchase nor possess a weapon.

RE: Another School shooting
http://www.redbluffdailynews.com/general...-neighbors

Quote:The man who went on a shooting spree Tuesday morning in Rancho Tehama, killing five and wounding 10, was being prosecuted for assault stemming from an attack on neighbors in January and possession of an assault weapon.

Kevin Janson Neal, 43, of Rancho Tehama was arrested Jan. 31 in the 6900 block of Bobcat Lane and booked into Tehama County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, according to police logs published in the Daily News.

Court documents show Neal was due to stand trial Jan. 11, 2018, on charges of second-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of false imprisonment by violence, discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, possession of an assault weapon and misdemeanor battery.

The documents list Neal as owning an AR-15 Bushmaster rifle, but it is not known whether it was used in Tuesday’s shootings.

Quote:Cohen said Neal was out of jail on $300,000 bail and had been since shortly after the January incident. His trial was scheduled for January following a preliminary hearing set for Dec. 15.

Neal sometimes used the last name Smith, Cohen said. The January incident was the first contact his office had with Neal.

http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/a...41668.html

Quote:Multiple sources told The Sacramento Bee that the dead suspect was Kevin Janson Neal, 43.

Johnston refused to confirm the identification, pending notification of family members. But he said one of the fatalities was a woman who lived near the suspect and was the victim of a late January assault that ended with the suspect in jail. Johnston added that he believed the suspect was slapped with a restraining order following the January arrest that would have prevented him from owning firearms for at least a period of time, although he had no details on that.

Neal was initially jailed in late January in the assault case and was being held on $160,000 bail, according to the Red Bluff Daily News. In April the district attorney’s office charged him with assaulting a second woman, also in late January, according to Tehama County Superior Court records.

Gregg Cohen, the Tehama district attorney, told The Bee that his office was prosecuting Neal on charges related to a stabbing and assault with a deadly weapon involving two of his neighbors.

If the reports are true and this is the same person I posted about in the previous post, combined with the information in the two articles listed above then this isn't a case of lax gun laws....it's once again a case of the government not doing it's job.

Not to mention the fact that a person sentenced to 10 years, 3 months and 29 days in prison in 2015 shouldn't have been on the street in 2017. That makes it a result of the lax criminal justice system.

So lets hire a bunch of ATF agents to ensure that gun laws are enforced. And where did he get the gun?

The point is that no law will stop anyone from committing a crime 100% of the time.

Some of the logic used in this and other forums is that this is why gun control doesn't work.

I was being sarcastic by making the point that if we use the logic that gun control doesn't work because some people will always break the law, then why do we have laws in place in the first place. Let's just give felons a gun since they are going to get them anyway right?

But the problem with your trolling is this: There were plenty of opportunities for authorities to deal with this and they didn't. Just like the Texas shooting this wasn't a case of a lack of laws but a lack of enforcement. What's the point of adding new laws when authorities aren't enforcing the ones already on the books?

I'm still waiting on your legislative recommendations, other than an "assault weapons" ban (nonstarter) or universal background checks (aka registration -> confiscation).

You can't just can't screaming #GunControlNow, offer no solutions, and then pretend we're the ones that aren't being reasonable.

NO NO NO - Ink on paper will only stop those that follow the law. Ink on paper will let the bad guys go around shooting people even more because they know all the law abiding citizens will not be able to shoot back at them any more and have nothing to fear you dummy. 05-stirthepot
